Wwwyto think that a brand new hospital should be able to perform more then one c section at a time?!

Okay, so I could well be unreasonable, but I am stressing!

My SIL has been in labour for the past 58 hours with numerous complications and now needs a C Section. There was a delay as a woman was already in theatre. Then another delay while they got two packs of her blood type to the theatre. Now she has been delayed again because another woman 'may' need a c section and they are waiting to see what happens with her first.

Now, of course I do not want ANY mother or child to be in danger and if that other mother is deemed as more of a priority, that is absolutely fine, obviously.

BUT am I being unreasonable in thinking that a hospital which has just had a £20 million refurbishment and is in a brand new building with brand new facilities, they should be able to perform more than one C section at a time?!

Or am I just being a stressed out SIL/Aunty?

Sounds like a very stressful time - I hope you have some good news soon. It's probably more about staff shortages rather than lack of facilities - even if shifts look as though they're fully rostered, all it takes is one anaesthetist or theatre nurse to be out with norovirus/flu/other lurgi to reduce the capacity of the hospital. Fingers crossed your sil is through it all soon and she and the baby are fine.

Staffing numbers rather than only having one available theatre.

If they are considering putting your SIL behind someone else again they cannot consider her case particularly urgent, which although frustrating is actually a good thing.

YABU, there is probably only one surgeon/anaesthetist available - having more than one surgeon on call at all times would cost and unbelievable amount of money and would be a waste because one surgeon would likely be hanging around for long periods doing nothing. Chances are there is another surgeon on standby so if push comes to shove he/she can come in but for the most part units tend to function with one working surgeon at a time.

Your poor SIL though, I hope she has an epidural! She must be knackered.

It's not necessarily a case of number of theatres; more likel to be availability of obstetricians and anaesthetists who perform epidurals.

I would think it is perhaps more to do with the time of year.

I do hope your SIL gets sorted soon. Poor thing sounds like she has been through the mill!

A refurbishment won't help with providing more surgeons, anaesthetists, paediatrician, nurses and midwives and whoever else is required for a c section.

YANBU to be worried, but if your SIL was in immediate danger then she would get her c section.

I expect they can do more than one at a time but only if both cases are emergencies. Hope all is well though, it must be stressful waiting for news and for you sil

Yanbu, I had an emcs with ds3 due to cord prolapse on a Sunday morning. Luckily they had two lots of staff/theatres as someone else was in the middle of an emcs. If they hadnt been able to get me in there and then ds3 would have died.

But it could be as goody said and one theatre may have to be kept free incase of emergancys like mine

I don't think I was this stressed when I was the one in labour! Waiting is awful!

I work in a maternity unit and we only have two obstetric theatres and sho an registrars and consultant on shift numbers don't change! Like a previous poster said if they feel ur sil can wait then there is no danger to baby or mummy otherwise baby would be delivered within a certain time frame!! Yes it's frustrating as a family member .... But if there was an urgent Emergancy with your sister would u rather the docs were with ur sister or with a less urgent or non urgent case???

Oh mrs I completely understand, I really do. I would absolutely want the emergency case to go first.

There is 2 theatres I the hospital I work in 1 is kept for emergencies. I did ask if ther was 2 emergency and a 3rd came up what would happen and they said they would use main theatres

I have a brand new baby nephew! Mum and baby are both fine!

Congratulations :) Your SIL must be massively relieved and tired, poor woman. She'll need a lot of help in the coming weeks if you can supply it.

I had 1 c section and i couldnt believe the amount of people involved.Really i felt like they were coming out of the woodwork. i think unless you have had one you wouldnt believe the manpower or woman power involved.

rainbow true, even when I had a cervical stitch placed in theatre there were 5-6 people. I did wonder why so many but maybe it's incase something happens.
