To expect people to fully read an original post before responding

iloveny001 · 27/12/2012 09:53

I've noticed that someone will write a detailed post, but when people respond, they ask a question that is answered in the original post.

For example:

OP: He had his phone switched off, so I tried emailing him instead
New poster:Why didn't you just phone him?

I understand when there are pages and pages of threads that something may get missed, but how can you say someone is bring unreasonable if you haven't read the original post properly?

OP posts:
Sirzy · 27/12/2012 09:56

Sometimes even if you do read it you miss something, especially if it is a waffley long post

StNiChaolas · 27/12/2012 09:56

A lot of people speed read?

BillyBollyBrandy · 27/12/2012 09:57

Sorry, have I missed something? Why didn't you just call him?

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 27/12/2012 09:57

It happens. I am fairly sure they think they've read it properly.

It happens more, I have noticed, if the post is confusing, garbled or lacking in paragraphs or punctuation.

So 50/50 I would say.

Responsibility of people to read properly
Responsibility of OP to post clearly

I've done it myself. Read a post, been convinced I've taken it all in and then posted something and realised I either got hold of totally the wrong end of the stick, or missed out a vital word or sentence or even more baffling, inserted one that wasn't even there Hmm

FrustratedSycamoreSnowflake · 27/12/2012 09:57

What if there are pages and pages of replies? Wink

fromparistoberlin · 27/12/2012 09:58

erm, dont sweat the small stuff OP

cabin fever today?????

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 27/12/2012 09:59

You have never misread something then?

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 27/12/2012 10:00

don't sweat the small stuff?

This advice to a user of a site that spent a fortnight in 2007 arguing whether a jaffa cake is a cake or a biscuit? Grin

If we didn't sweat the small stuff this site would have about 3 posts and two of them would be asking if it was ok to bring back the small stuff!

Fakebook · 27/12/2012 10:02

But what if there are pages and pages of the thread, some things may get missed out.

Amytheflag · 27/12/2012 10:06

I can't tell if the people posting about "pages and pages" of the thread are being serious or winding the OP up and it huuuurts my braaaain.

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 10:06

guilty - as charged. and i am not a big fan of jaffa cakes

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 27/12/2012 10:07

I suspect they are joking, Amy Grin

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 10:07

if the threads are long though i quite often only read the op's posts.

Amytheflag · 27/12/2012 10:08

Thank you lol! I did wonder but not being sure made my brain cry :D

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 10:08

actually this can happen if actual RL conversations. it is annoying i spose for the op and you feel like stampign you feet and Saying, I told you, I DID ring

iloveny001 · 27/12/2012 10:17

Fully expect people to take the mick Grin . I just feel sorry for the OP when it gets heated, and people may not have read the original post properly.

OP posts:
FobblyWoof · 27/12/2012 10:21

I have the problem of not even wording my original post properly so anyone reading it hasn't got a snowball in hell's chance of knowing what I'm actually getting at!

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 27/12/2012 10:22

Yup.

I've been on threads where people have totally reinvented what the OP is saying and got all cross about it and stuck her on a toasting fork and shoved her into the fire

And I've been there jumping up and down and yelling but she didn't even SAY THAT! (not on my own, with others leaping up and down too Grin ) but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

So I think people sometimes read what they want to read.

And if you notice it - just be one of those waving their arms and jumping up and down.

It may not be enough to stop the toasting, but I am sure the OP appreciates it Grin

Atthewelles · 27/12/2012 10:42

Even when people read the post properly some of them completely misinterpret what the OP is saying or pick on some tiny aspect of the post and start analysing and criticising it, while ignoring the main point the OP was trying to make. eg

OP: I was down at the school earlier and this big bloody SUV was completely blocking the gate. Why do some people feel they can park with no consideration for anyone else

Respondent: What is wrong with SUVs? I'm sick of these posts attacking anyone who has a nicer car than them.

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 10:43

and when the op adds a point they had forgotten before they are accused of backtracking or dripfeeding
sigh.
the ansewr is, do not AIBU.

StNiChaolas · 27/12/2012 10:53

ACTUAL jumping, Hectate?

NannyEggn0gg · 27/12/2012 10:56

And there is no excuse imo, now that I know how to make the OP's posts stand out in one colour (unless the gits awkward soandsos change their name) and mine in another.
So even if it's a really long thread and I can't be arsed haven't the time to read it all I can at least concentrate on the main points.

Iheartpasties · 27/12/2012 11:24

but why didnt you just ring him?

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 27/12/2012 11:28

Thats a bit rude. My wobbly bits do not need your pondering, thank you

Grin

He's probably having an affair. Or maybe bedn arrested. Either way he is disrespecting you and you deserve better.

Have you tried his mobile?
