To expect people to fully read an original post before responding

iloveny001 · 27/12/2012 09:53

I've noticed that someone will write a detailed post, but when people respond, they ask a question that is answered in the original post.

For example:

OP: He had his phone switched off, so I tried emailing him instead
New poster:Why didn't you just phone him?

I understand when there are pages and pages of threads that something may get missed, but how can you say someone is bring unreasonable if you haven't read the original post properly?

What's worse, imo, is people who don't read a long thread at all. So we get an OP who begins by mildly ranting about her dh forgetting to put the cat out at night, and gradually exposes a darker tale of terrible abuse and violence. Along comes a poster after a few days who can't be arsed to read the whole 20 pages and says "why don't you put a post-it on the door to remind him?"

Allergictoironing · 27/12/2012 11:37

Then again I sometimes feel an OP needs to read their own post. Been a couple of occasions lately where after a page or 2 the OP comes back & says "why are you all assuming x?" - cue a number of direct quotes from theor own posts stating x in unequivocable terms Grin

DameFannyGallopsBEHINDyou · 27/12/2012 11:42

Well of course a jaffa cake is a cake. Tchah.

Anniegetyourgun · 27/12/2012 11:43

More amusing are the ones who go "can't be bothered to read the whole thread but..." when "the whole thread" consists of about three other posts.

Itsafreefuckingcuntry · 27/12/2012 11:44

You could try paging him?

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 11:45

or facebook him?

AmIthatTinselly · 27/12/2012 15:54

How about those that conveniently miss the view of the majority of the responses and post to ask

"Am I the only one who thinks......................"

No, you're not the only one who thinks it. Read the other replies first. ggrrrrrr

iloveny001 · 27/12/2012 19:59

Nanny, how do you get the names in a different colour?

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 27/12/2012 20:05

It's in your settings, iloveny.

Honestly, if an OP is more than about 4 sentences, I don't even bother. I just hide the thread. I can't be bothered to read a novel, especially when all that is really needed is 'Should I x?' or 'Shouldn't he have x?' or similar.

I don't need your life story, thanks.

MarcelineTheVampireQueen · 27/12/2012 20:45

I know exactly what you mean OP, I posted recently about my purse being stolen. The first words I typed were I AM AT THE POLICE STATION. Cue 6 million post saying "you need to go to the police station".....

I agree that some people read what they want to read and re invent the whole OP. Others read the first and last post, ingnoring what goes on. V annoying!

iloveny001 · 27/12/2012 22:27

Marceline, I remember your thread, it must have been so frustrating, and is exactly my point!

amillionyears · 27/12/2012 22:37

Its life.

FunnysFuckingFreezing · 27/12/2012 22:38

YABU and I haven't RTFT. I will now read and see if my point has been made

ImperialSantaKnickers · 27/12/2012 22:43

I was on about just this problem on a thread earlier. YANBU!

ItLooksLikeRainDear · 27/12/2012 23:02

How do you know his phone was switched off? He may have been ignoring you! Leave the bastard!

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 27/12/2012 23:08

It's annoying, especially in AIBU, where the Op graciously apologises and then still gets attacked posts and posts later because people haven't read the thread.
Just highlight the op, you'll get the gist of it.
Though I do agree, if it's a long convulated first post with no paragraphs, it's very easy to miss something.

cumfy · 28/12/2012 00:21

And let the facts distort my prejudices ?

Fakebook · 28/12/2012 00:25

Haven't read the rest of the thread, because I cba, but I think you need to change the settings so the OP's posts stand out.

ArielInTheBath · 28/12/2012 00:26

I remember one thread where this woman said her friend was 20 minutes early meeting her

But nobody bothered to read that part and everyone kept having a go the OP and calling her rude for being late, when she even said in her OP she was 5 minutes early Confused

misterwife · 28/12/2012 07:14

some people post like this because dh came home and he was in a bad mood and trod his shoes all on the carpet and ds1 has scroffula and dh hasnt been co-operative,all week, and mil is staying with us and expetcs the whole world to revolve arnd her as well there was an incident in topshop on saturday when she caused a scene because she wanted to return a jumper but the shop assistant said it had already been worn which with ds1 having scroffula is not exactly an ideal situation and i just want to string up the bloody pair of them to be honest and ds2s teacher was rude sent him home for wearing the WRONG SOCKS and i asked dh could he get us some cheese on toast but he just sat around for two hours playing bloody fifa!!! i ask you

I hate posts like that. I agree with all the people who say that it's a two-way street. Garbage in, garbage out. If you write clearly, only silly people will misread the post.

FarrahFawcettsFlick · 28/12/2012 09:07

For VAT purposes Jaffa Cakes are cakes.

Because - when stale, biscuits go soft and cakes go hard! Choc covered biscuits are standard rated and choc covered cakes are 0 rated. The choc covering on the biscuits were very important in this case.

flow4 · 28/12/2012 09:13

Jaffa cakes are biscuits. Obviously.
Why did you feel you had to email him to check?

atthewelles · 28/12/2012 10:12

I rarely read a thread where the opening post runs on and on with loads of confusing background info about DGPs and DSIL and DN and on and on. Life's too short.

But there are also some people who totally ignore some salient point in the OP in order to take umbrage and shout YANBU.

atthewelles · 28/12/2012 10:12

Sorry, shout YABU not YANBU.

Enfyshedd · 28/12/2012 10:53

YANBU. I agree with LadyBeagle & Marceline - there's a live thread at the moment which starts off as an Xmas Day argument & it turns out there's a history of EA, fraud & theft. About 2/3's though, someone's posted something along the lines of "Give them a break & apologise", then instantly posts again "OMG, didn't read that bit - you need legal advice & fast!"
