To go home and miss boxing day with in-laws.

We are staying tonight and supposed to tomorrow night. I have a hacking cough and head cold and my in-laws and every member of their extended family chain smoke. Although they don't smoke inside when we are here they will smoke just outside the open door so it all comes in and obviously it's permeated everything.

Today there were 13 people smoking just outside the door.

My hair and clothes stink, the kids stink, all the toys now stink and I just cannot stop coughing and can hardly breathe, miserable.

Should I just go home in the morning, we are only 30 minutes away but we always stay these two nights at Xmas.

I'd go home. If you only live 30 minutes away, there is no need for you to stay 'just because'

ImperialBlether · 25/12/2012 22:14

I'd be out of there and take the kids with me. It sounds so unhealthy.

ZenNudist · 25/12/2012 22:19

If any of my family lived 30 mins away I'd be going for dinner and then home to chill in my own space. Def leave tomorrow. Plead illness and go and make some smoke free family fun at home

FlojoHoHoHo · 25/12/2012 22:20

Def go home, I have no idea why you'd ever want to stop in the first place when u are only 30 mins away.

Narnia34 · 25/12/2012 22:20

If you're not feeling well, then best to go home.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 25/12/2012 22:20

Say how worried you are that you might be infectious, "so much of it about" and how awful it would be if you infected Aunty Nelly or whoever and how sorry you are to miss out but "better safe than sorry" and go home Xmas Wink

ProPerformer · 25/12/2012 22:24

Go home and tell them exactly why!!
I wouldn't be able to stay five minutes in their house myself as am very hypersensitive to cigarette smoke! It's doing neither you or the kids any good and the smell will stick to all their lovely new things for ages!
Tell them you just can't breathe in that atmosphere and need to go home for your health!

MincepiePatty · 25/12/2012 22:26

I totally agree with PomBear, plead sickness and run away!
Just too unhealthy for everyone smoke germs etc not to mention how your clothes and presents smell! No brainer to me

maddening · 25/12/2012 22:26

Yeah I'd go home - I have been sick today (d&v) and am seriously thinking of sending df alone to fmil with ds - 1.5 hr drive each way and I'd have to take my own food (veggie) -tbh even if I feel a bit better I might stay home and clean as due to me being ill the house is a state and I've not eaten and feel pants.

BackforGood · 25/12/2012 22:28

What Pom said.
But also, what other said about staying in the first place. I mean, it's nice of them to try and help by going outside while you are there, but must absolutely reek of smoke anyway. There's no way I'd be staying if I lived that locally.

VisualiseAHorse · 25/12/2012 22:31

Off you go!! Take them home, use the feeling poorly as an excuse. Go home, get some medecine and PJ's, and watch shite TV with the kids.

VisualiseAHorse · 25/12/2012 22:33

Obviously, that was supposed to say 'medicine'. Stupid alcohol.

Speedos · 25/12/2012 22:34

Yes I hate coming here but it is one of those arguments with DH that I just can't be bothered having anymore. I take the kids to stay for about 8 weeks a year with my parents abroad and he just wants to stay these nights with his. Completely pointless to me as there is no enough bloody room anyway!

I am going home in the morning, DH can stay if he wants.

not

I'd have a dodgy tum in the night and be all worried about passing on Norovirus.

Or better still the kids could have dodgy tums - then no question of them being left behind.

Unless you fancy a child free night of course....
