Toddlers shouldn't be in Asda at 12:45am?!

Due to a DH accidentally damaging part of a family members Christmas present I had to nip out to Asda past midnight and I was pretty shocked to see two different women with toddlers doing a huge shop.

Now I realise that due to shift work this might be the only time the parent has to go shop but these weren't babies asleep in buggies in PJs or a sleep suit these were very awake bubs. All local accents, etc so not jet lagged kids I'd assume.

AIBU??

Not sure, toddlers don't really have an office hours routine yet, so it's good to make use of that flexibility sometimes.

They could have had a nap earlier, or lots of other reasons MN is great at dredging up from nowhere Grin

It's Christmas! Who gives a fuck? Grin

Fairyegg · 24/12/2012 01:05

Some people probably have no choice. I'm lucky enough to have the choice but I think I would rather wake the kids up and go at 12.45 am than 12.45 pm to be honest. Much quicker and my kids are good sleepers so they would easiy go back to sleep once home. Not ideal I admit but each to ones own.

Rindercella · 24/12/2012 01:08

Yabu. It really doesn't matter. They don't have school in the morning, do they? It could be the only chance the mothers have been able to get to the shops.

I really don't know why stuff like this concerns other people?

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 24/12/2012 01:08

No-one should be in Asda at 12.45am

Now up the wooden hill all of you.

Amazoniancracker · 24/12/2012 01:09

YABU. Judgy or what!

Also, you obviously have more than one DH, so you really need to get your own relationships in order before criticising other women who maybe don't even have one to help out.

JustCallMeDavesHorse · 24/12/2012 01:13

At least they didn't have to queue!

LineRunner · 24/12/2012 01:14

God, how many DHs do you have?

And yes, YABU to judge other people.

CordeliaChase · 24/12/2012 01:14

If I had no other choice, I would do the same. My two year old has been a great sleeper since 5mo, so the odd late night wouldn't disrupt him too much.

OrangeLily · 24/12/2012 01:14

I did think I was probably being unreasonable and yes... very judgey.

Took me a while to spot the mistake but thanks I do only have one DH!

I never ever normally visit a supermarket at this time of night so O suppose I was just very surprised.

Thank you everyone.... Your reasons do make sense. Smile

We bought our toddler home from Xmas meal at friends at about 11.30. She had a late nap and loved seeing all the lights at night and getting home in the dark. She had a quick bath then into bed. She's sleeping soundly and came to no harm. No different to going shopping.

LineRunner · 24/12/2012 01:19

Good on you, OP. Xmas Smile

Softlysoftly · 24/12/2012 01:21

DD1 decided tonight she wasn't sleeping until Santa came, she only just face planted fell asleep, she would have been more than happy with a late night shop. Better than the hell we faced at 11am today!

CaliforniaSucksSnowballs · 24/12/2012 01:28

Happy toddlers, I wouldn't care. Now if they were screaming tired miserable toddlers then I'd hitch up my judgy pants.

MrRected · 24/12/2012 01:44

Couldn't agree more.

Toddlers should be at home in bed. What did these parents do before the shops started staying open all hours?

10 years ago, this would not have been possible.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/12/2012 01:47

Toddlers aren't so bad. But my Dad used to work nights at a supermarket and it drove him bonkers that so many people took their school age children shopping after 12am.

IneedAsockamnesty · 24/12/2012 01:47

Why shouldn't they be?

If they were cheerful then what's the problem. Perhaps they were coming back early from a all night rave ( do they still exist?)

vivizone · 24/12/2012 01:50

well we have moved on from 10 yrs ago, above poster. 100 years ago there were no inside toilets. we have them now.

MrsJREwing · 24/12/2012 01:55

Asda have cancelled online orders, so no deliveries for their customers according to threads on mn.

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 24/12/2012 01:56

'10 years ago, this would not have been possible.'

I for one don't mourn the passing of the Shopping Police.

I had a hell of a time explaining why I had butter, a cucumber and a Christmas pud one year Shock

DH didn't talk to me for two days.

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 24/12/2012 01:57

That's pretty shit of them MrsJ, hope everyone who's been let down have the capacity to get to a shop themselves.

MrsJREwing · 24/12/2012 02:03

One lady said she was given £150 vouchers from Asda.

Yes going to be very difficult for those not able to get out.

IneedAsockamnesty · 24/12/2012 02:04

Who are the shopping police and why was your husband not talking to you because of butter cucumber and Christmas pudding?

Does he have a phobia of all three?

MammaTJ · 24/12/2012 04:53

MrRected the chance are the parents of now toddlers didn't have children 10 years ago, so they were probably relying on someone else to sort Christmas and ejoying the lead up to it mainly in pubs. Grin

Like someone else said, life has moved on, it is called progress. People have more options. Those mums no longer have to drag a screaming tot around a supermarket at busy times, they can take a cheerfully awake tot at a quieter time. Then the child can sleep in in the morning.

Cathycomehome · 24/12/2012 05:04

Ahem, you COULD do this 10 years ago. The 24 hour tesco next to my house was a sanity saver when my now 12 year old was a colicky baby. Better walking round tesco with the ravers and night shift workers than trapped in a flat with the screaming.

Also, I have a 5 month old as well as my 12 year old and if he stops being a good sleeper for any reason I'd do it again!
