to think it doesn't matter if an OP or poster isn't genuine??

takataka · 19/12/2012 16:50

was just enjoying the thread about the lady who was too beautiful...and it was deleted because the OP wasn't genuine?

genuine 'what'??? Confused

she (or he) was genuinely a person...do we care if the problem is real or made up? there was no harm to the thread, except people being a bit 'orrible; but then people are more horrid on actual 'genuine' threads which are left standing...

and all them sharon threads....sharon got banned from the pub didnt she? (metaphorically speaking)

OP posts:

It can do.

If the poster is spinning a story trying to hurt people. Or scam them. Or get them to volunteer to give them stuff because they've detailed some terrible situation they're in. Or gets people to share deeply personal stories because they think they're helping, but in reality, the person is just getting their rocks off.

Now, I know - never give more (money, goods, emotionally...) than you can afford to lose. But it still has the power to affect people and that does matter.

Witchofthenorth · 19/12/2012 16:53

Sharon threads?....I knew I should have broken my mumsnet fast sooner Sad

seriously, i couldnt care...she wasnt hurting anyone and I found the thread quite amusing.

StuffezLaBouche · 19/12/2012 16:54

It absolutely does matter.

I have seen worried MNers offer to travel miles to assist a woman in a shit situation who turned out to be some fucking sicko with too much time on their hands.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 19/12/2012 16:55

Journos

MsElleTow · 19/12/2012 16:55

It does matter.

Lots of people have been really, really hurt by trolls on here in the past.

AnnoyingOrange · 19/12/2012 16:56

It does matter. People are kind hearted and get emotionally invested. It can be very damaging

peaceandlovebunny · 19/12/2012 16:56

not just journos. sometimes just silly people thinking they are having a laugh.

AfterEightMintyy · 19/12/2012 16:56

It matters very much. Who wants to interact with a construct?

DisappointedPantomimeHorse · 19/12/2012 16:57

I suppose it depends what it is. Some are amusing but some are inflammatory.

People take the time and effort to respond, often bare their souls, rake up wounds etc in order to try and help others.

I've been on forums for too many years now and I have often seen them go to cock when it gets out of hand. The Cuban Lounge anyone?

caramelwaffle · 19/12/2012 16:57

It can matter.

So with that in mind, Yabu.

Witchety · 19/12/2012 16:58

It matters.... I've been here long enough to see the fall out

SallyCinnamonandNutmeg · 19/12/2012 16:58

Don't worry taka, Posting Beauty is back and has just started another thread.

lljkk · 19/12/2012 16:58

it matters to me. It doesn't matter to OP. Difference of opinion.

I don't care how people use their cutlery.

Or if they wear out-of-fashion clothes.
Or if they have upvc windows. Grin

I do care if folk lie about their lives. It bothers me. Unless they're changing details to protect confidentiality. I can't think of other good excuses.

MrsChristmasVamos · 19/12/2012 16:58

Of course it matters if posters are genuine !

There is enough nastiness and heart-break and crap in this world without fake posters, for whatever reason, trying to have a laugh at others expense.

lljkk · 19/12/2012 17:01

okay, and obvious jokes. Those are acceptable falsehoods, too. :)

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 19/12/2012 17:02

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't

On the "beautiful" thread it didn't matter to begin with because it was completely obvious from the off that it was a windup. What is a bit irritating is that when people rightly take the piss, you get the professionally-offended wading in and saying "you lot are a nest of vipers and you are bitches to the OP blah blah"

What that then does is create resentments between otherwise completely amicable sets of posters. And a bunfight ensues. Which is exactly what the winder-upper was after.

So I suppose it can always potentially matter and that is without even touching on the various begging, disablist and otherwise potentially damaging threads.

I think it matters. I like to discuss/help out with genuine issues, so it pisses me off if someone is spinning a lie just for the heck of it (or worse).

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 19/12/2012 17:07

and bingo here she is Grin

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 19/12/2012 17:08

Is it Samantha Brick?

MolotovCocktail · 19/12/2012 17:12

It's annoying to think you've invested time/emotion, etc, into a discussion that turns out to be a load of old balls ...

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 19/12/2012 17:12

Afternoon.

Yes, that thread was deleted because it was started by a poster we had previously banned.

And yes, we do think, generally speaking, that it matters that we delete these threads. For many reasons - but mainly because we don't want other MNers to waste their time replying to them and also because we'd rather not give the trolls any more opportunity to get their rocks off at our expense

Oblomov · 19/12/2012 17:13

"It does matter.

Exactly. Of course it matters. What a silly Op.
