Apologies for this not being an AIBU post but I just want a quick bit of advice.

Took the morning after pill on Sunday 9th December after a bit of a mishap the night before Blush and started bleeding heavily the next day. Period wasn't due for another week at least. Over a week later and I've still not stopped bleeding.

I've not been able to get an appointment at the docs, and rang for advice to be told it was normal for the MAP to cause some "irregularity" in my cycle, but I've had nearly 8 days of very heavy bleeding and I'm starting to feel drained and ill. I've never taken it before so I don't know if this is normal or not? Does anyone have any experience? I'm off work after I morrow so I'm going to get to the docs if it hasn't stopped.

I would go to the doctors. 8 days of bleeding seems more than an 'irregularity'.
Anecdotally, I've taken it twice and had no bleeding.

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 17/12/2012 23:05

If not then try a sexual health or woman's health clinic. I've no experience I'm afraid though.

LadyMaryChristmas · 17/12/2012 23:05

You need to give NHS direct a call. The fact that you're feeling unwell and drained could indicate anaemia due to blood loss, so you could do with being checked over by a medic in case it gets any worse.

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:09

Thanks ladies. I'll call the docs again tomorrow and see if I can get in after work. You're right, it seems more than an irregularity, just the triage nurse I spoke to on the phone made me feel like I was making a big deal out of nothing, but I feel really shitty.

Do you have any iron tablets?

I'd take them while waiting for an appointment if I were you.

Good luck Thanks

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:15

Thanks :) yes I've got some tablets. Well, multivitamins with iron, but I guess they'd be better than nothing! Feeling really tired, a bit light headed and short of breath which is probably low iron. Just don't think this is normal!

OP posts:
LadyMaryChristmas · 17/12/2012 23:22

Triage nurse has clearly never had niagra falling out of her fanjo! Angry If your iron levels are low then you need more than what's in the multivitamins. Pop and see your GP. Low iron will cause shortness of breath, a light head, irregular heart beat and brittle nails. How much blood are you losing?

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 17/12/2012 23:24

The map is meant to bring on a period, right? Best to get checked out though.

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:24

I'm flooding through a nighttime pad in about an hour :( it's slowed down a bit but still as heavy as a normal period. Don't even remember bleeding this bad after I had ds! I'm going to ring tomorrow and insist I get seen; just dint know if this was normal and I was just being dramatic!

OP posts:
MummyDuckAndDuckling · 17/12/2012 23:27

That is a lot! And it's been this heavy for 8 days?

LadyMaryChristmas · 17/12/2012 23:31

That's not normal. I really do think that you could do with being checked over ASAP, as you're showing symptoms of anaemia then A&E is probably the best place to go. I have fibroids and bleed like this sometimes, it's vile. I ended up in hospital last time and narrowly escaped a transfusion. They won't mind if you go.

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:32

Yep. Non-stop :( thought it was just a bad period at first, but they usually last 4-5 days max and, although I seem to be slowing down finally, it's still heavy and I've got horrendous lower back ache with it. Felt like I was in bloody labour the other night, and was passing clots. Decided this definitely isn't normal so demanding some medical attention tomorrow!

OP posts:
steppemum · 17/12/2012 23:34

This amount of bleeding for 8 days is not normal (and I speak as someone who has had years of niagra periods) You will collapse from blood loss.

If you can't get to your gp, get to a walk in clinic, or phone NHS direct. YOu need to tell them how much you are bleeding, nightime pad in one hour, not just I'm having a period.
Hope you get seen

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:36

Now that's made me think LadyMaryChristmas because I was told last year that I have fibroids when I had a scan, but I've never really had any symptoms. Wondering if maybe the hormones in the MAP have caused them to play up? I know fibroids are affected by oestrogen so that might be the cause of this?

OP posts:
MummyDuckAndDuckling · 17/12/2012 23:37

Are you sure you weren't possibly pregnant already?

LadyMaryChristmas · 17/12/2012 23:40

Fibroids can cause crazy bleeding. My iron levels were 8.2 when I went into A&E at 12, 4 hours later they had fallen to 7.4 and the bleeding had slowed down. You'll pass out if you don't get this treated. It's better to get it checked out then to pass out.

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:40

It's very unlikely as we've been using condoms but I guess nothing's 100%. I need to get a coil put in or something so I don't have this palaver again!

OP posts:
Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:42

I'm definitely going to go tomorrow, won't let them fob me off! Thank you all :)

OP posts:
LadyMaryChristmas · 17/12/2012 23:47

Do call NHS direct if you start to feel worse though.

Itsnotahoover · 17/12/2012 23:48

I will and thank you :)

I had the copper iud put in (after a total c@ck up on my dates) and the first few periods I had were a bit Enoch Powell. I was losing every day what you would expect to lose per period (I have a mooncup, so can check). But the third month was a zillion times better and I'm so glad I persisted. It's so far the best contraception I've ever used.

I also felt like crap when bleeding heavily and iron tablets did the trick but did give me awful constipation Blush

EllenParsons · 18/12/2012 02:57

MAP can often cause you to get your period soon after taking it even if it would not normally be due and it can be heavier or last longer than normal with worse cramps but 8 days and that bad does sound cause for concern especially if you are really feeling unwell because of it. I agree you should che k NHL direct or your gp to be on the safe side.

EllenParsons · 18/12/2012 02:57

Check NHS that should say

LadyMaryChristmas · 18/12/2012 10:36

It's difficult for them to put a coil in if there's fibroids.

Hope you're OK, hoover. Smile

SledsImOn · 18/12/2012 10:50

Are you alright, OP? Let us know how you get on if you feel up to it x
