To wonder how a 20 year old walked into a nursery with a semi automatic

It suddenly occurred to me. How was he able to just walk in? I visit a lot of nurseries to visit students on placement. I have to sign in. Show my badge. Get a visitor pass.
How did he get in? What procedures were in place?

I haven't read all the news TBH - but I did see something that said he had forced his way in. I don't think he was let in.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 17/12/2012 18:16

I assume that because he had a weapon, he just walked in. Who could have stopped him?

ZacharyQuack · 17/12/2012 18:17

It was a primary school, and he shot a hole through the locked glass door.

DorsetKnobwithJingleBellsOn · 17/12/2012 18:17

He forced his way in.

OddBoots · 17/12/2012 18:17

"Visitors to the school have to be "buzzed in" by a member of staff. But at about 09:30, Lanza shot his way into the school, police now say, contrary to earlier reports that he had been let in."

Ah ok. That explains it then! He was shooting before he even got in!

It was announced yesterday he broke the windows and climbed in.
The head teacher and another member of staff were killed trying to stop him getting in. Is that enough procedure?

This was all widely reported yesterday.

Yabu to have not bothered keeping up to date with the story, then starting this thread.

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:21

Well seeing as the country doesn't want to give up its beloved guns. I suggest they get bullet proof glass in schools and nurseries!
I could not send my child off to nursery and have the thought that someone could just blow their way in!

You have answered your own question. He was armed with a semi automatic gun,it wasn't like he politely asked to come in was it Biscuit

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:22

Brady..I have a 7 year old playing next to me. I don't subject her to these horrors. It was just a thought that occurred to me. Don't be so aggressive!

InExitCelsisDeo · 17/12/2012 18:23

It wasn't a nursery.

What brady said.

nailak · 17/12/2012 18:23

what is lockdown?

InExitCelsisDeo · 17/12/2012 18:23

You could read the newspapers?

AnyaKnowIt · 17/12/2012 18:24

Last week I bet no one thought that someone would force their way in Hmm

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:26

Oh sorry guys. I didn't realise that you couldn't start a thread on here until you had researched a topic inside and out.
I must reread the mumsnet list of rules. I'm clearly breaking them!

I have an 8 year old and a toddler. Still manage to catch up on news.

I am not being aggressive. I am giving you my opinion.
And in my opinion if you wanted to find this out the news would have been the first stop.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 17/12/2012 18:29

No one said you needed to know it inside out. That's the point. Its been widely reported.

Does your Childs school have bullet proof glass? It has happened here.

I can't imagine many elementary schools would have thought there was a need for bullet proof glass before Friday.

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:29

Well I work Weekends as a nurse Brady so perhaps I haven't had time to research every aspect of this story. But there you go!

I think lockdown is the procedure schools in America have after the Columbine massacre.

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:31

No I don't think that before Friday they thought they needed bullet proof glass but maybe they need to reconsider it now.
I don't think you can compare USA to here in terms of killing sprees with guns. I may be wrong.

OP posts:
nailak · 17/12/2012 18:32

i read bbc news and didnt find out what lockdown was, i found a victim statement from one of the parents saying they heard the school was in lockdown and rushed to the school and they didnt know what lockdown was either, so since someone with more knowledge then me mentioned it i am asking, isnt that how you find out stuff? by asking people with knowledge?

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 17/12/2012 18:33

But their population is alot higher. So 'spree' to population ratio may not be that different.

We also had Hungerford. So it does happen here. While American gun laws seem ludicrous to me. Stricter laws don't stop them completely.

SantasBigBaubles · 17/12/2012 18:34

no, you don't have to research it in an out...but you could maybe read a little bit about before you get angry about it? Hmm coudn't you?

Loveweekends10 · 17/12/2012 18:35

Santa..angry no. Mildly irritated ...yes.
But I have my answer now. Thank you very much for your time and patience in explaining it to me.
