To think that those people who seem genuinely concerned about the apocalypse need to get a grip?

Seriously. No-one really believes this, do they? Not really? it's up there with Santa and the tooth fairy - it's not real. And yet I've seen posts from people on here saying they are genuinely worried! Hmm

Even if it were real, you won't know about it because... ... ... you'll be dead! Grin

I'm sure I read somewhere that pole shifts have happened & are not catastrophic events.

May have dreamt that, though.

That Nancy Lieder sounds like the kind of deluded moron that I absolutely despise. It's scary how many people will listen to someone like that and believe every word though Angry

EllieArroway · 18/12/2012 14:18

No, Rocking, I think you'll find we're saying exactly the opposite.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 18/12/2012 14:19

how can you all sit there and discuss the end of the world like its nothing then ask how you would spend your last hours???
I am TERRIFIED about this and most people think its a joke.

EllieArroway · 18/12/2012 14:23

We can joke about it because it's not going to happen, Rocking. Honestly. Really.

Tell us why you're terrified, and maybe we can help reassure you. What have you read that's caused you to think this is all real?

EldritchCleavage · 18/12/2012 14:23

Rocking, the world isn't ending any time soon. That's why I and one or two other posters feel able to joke about the prospect. We are positing a really far-fetched hypothesis then saying silly things about it.

I'm sorry you are feeling terrified. But your fears HAVE NO BASIS IN FACT.

Please, have a look at the NASA website. There is good stuff on there from people who really study these things debunking the 2012 Mayan apocalypse guff and other daft theories.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 18/12/2012 14:27

ellie i have read nothing that's caused me to think this is all real its just i have researched it and its horrible to think that this could happen.
i fear for my kids my familys saftey everytime i set foot out the door.

MadSleighLady · 18/12/2012 14:31

What have you read when you've been researching it then?

ReshapeWhileDashingThroTheSnow · 18/12/2012 14:34

TheIcingOnTop - there are indeed many civilisations and past societies which seem to have ceased to function quite suddenly (bear in mind that what might look like an overnight disaster or desertion on the ground several thousand years later might not have been quite so sudden at the time). But believe me, there is plenty of evidence supporting why this happened. Go ask an archaeologist. Grin

wannaBe · 18/12/2012 14:36

"how can you all sit there and discuss the end of the world like its nothing then ask how you would spend your last hours???
I am TERRIFIED about this and most people think its a joke." erm, because it's not real. it's not real. it's not real. repeat... and breathe... and repeat... it's not real...
And it's perfectly ok to joke about it because... it's not real...

And ultimately, we're all going to die. Maybe it will be on Friday. Maybe it will be next year. Maybe it will be in 50 years time, thing is, nobody knows when they're going to die.

Rocking, if you are researching stuff on the Internet, bear in mind that many websites are full of unsubstantiated bollocks.
Anyone can write anything they like on the Internet without having to prove it.

Your family is at far more risk crossing the road every day, travelling in cars etc, than the risk of the world ending on Friday. It's just not going to happen.

EllieArroway · 18/12/2012 14:37

Rocking I think you've let the fear of this run away with you. Do you suffer anxiety generally? (Apologies if you've already said up thread).

So, you haven't been convinced by anything you've read specifically - it's just the "what if?" that's scaring you?

Have you looked at NASA's website as Eldritch suggests? It's quite comprehensive in it's explanations of why the world isn't about to end.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 18/12/2012 14:38

but you cant say it is not going to happen because until saturday morning no one will know.

PostBellumBugsy · 18/12/2012 14:39

Goodness, I am really, really stunned that there are grown up adults actually giving more than a fleeting thought to this crock of shit about the end of the world on 21st December.
Bloody hell - the Mayans thought the earth was flat and made human sacrifices. Purlease, don't give this ridiculous nonsense any credence!

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 18/12/2012 14:40

it is the what if's ellie.
what if someone goes into my dd's school and shoots them all like what happened friday?
what if my kids get snatched while im not looking?
what if i get cancer or some other god awful disease and i die?
what f my dp gets killed on the way to work?
what if the plane crashes?

D0oinMeCleanin · 18/12/2012 14:41

My mum believes it. We won't all die. The banks will collapse. Money will become obsolete. We will all go back to working the land and swapping home grown goods for stuff we need.

I'll be fine. I have three hounds to catch rabbits for me, the rest of you will starve mwhahahaha.

Although she also believed the dead would walk the earth during the Olympics and that never happened Hmm

mysleighscalldtrev · 18/12/2012 14:41

Rocking - so you haven't bothered with buying anything for Christmas then? Bet you've saved a fortune!

EllieArroway · 18/12/2012 14:42

Nostradamus? Really?

Nostradamus debunked:

wannaBe · 18/12/2012 14:42

"but you cant say it is not going to happen because until saturday morning no one will know." Yes. we can. And let's be honest, if it happens you won't know about it. So what is the point in worrying about it?

And bear in mind that when 11:12 GMT arrives it will already be saturday morning in some part of the southern hemisphere.

The internet is full of unsubstantiated bullshit. It is not a wise place too go for people suffering with irational anxiety about imaginary events.

OP posts:
EldritchCleavage · 18/12/2012 14:43

Rocking those links are to worthless websites peddling unscientific shite. If you do nothing else for yourself today, please stop reading that stuff, because it seems to be frightening you.

Not all (internet) information is equal. Just because someone has put up a webpage does not mean the stuff they write on it has validity.

RockingAroundTheBloodyXmasTree · 18/12/2012 14:43

i hadnt heard of the apocalyse until my dp rented the film 2012 then i researched it about 2 weeks ago and i have finished my shopping in nov.
i have not wrapped though.

FridgeBenefits · 18/12/2012 14:43

Nostradamus spent his life writing thousands of predictions, the majority of which have been long forgotten because they were a load of shite

The predictions which did come "true" were translated/decoded after the event, when, like reading tarot cards, it's easy to read many scenarios from a few lines of text.

Do yourself a favour and stop looking on the Internet.

EllieArroway · 18/12/2012 14:45

Yes, Rocking - and those are fears that each and every single one of us have every day of our lives. Those fears are still going to exist for you after Friday, aren't they? It's a question of getting things into proportion.

Honestly, love, you sound like you're really struggling with anxiety. This is an illness like any other and there's help available. Living in fear like that is a terrible thing. Have you spoken to your GP?

FridgeBenefits · 18/12/2012 14:46

"it is the what if's ellie.

Rocking, please go to your GP and discuss this. You aren't living your life if you are so worried about all these things. You will also pass on these fears to your dc - do you want them to feel this anxious when the next End of Days prediction rolls around?

D0oinMeCleanin · 18/12/2012 14:47

Rocking to reassure you the Mayans did not predict the end of the world.

They believed in cycles. Friday is just the end of their long cycle, that is all. One cycle ends, another starts.

If you think logically about it, the poor sods did well making a calendar that lasted until the end of 2012. They couldn't really carry on forever could they?

The prophesies my Mum believes in are by that Nostra whats-his-face, whose predictions stretch way, way into the year 3000 and beyond. He predicted that the world would "End as we know it" not completely, although I am sure that had something to do with the Olympics and the dead rising, which has already passed, so I am pretty sure we are all safe.
