To think that those people who seem genuinely concerned about the apocalypse need to get a grip?

Seriously. No-one really believes this, do they? Not really? it's up there with Santa and the tooth fairy - it's not real. And yet I've seen posts from people on here saying they are genuinely worried! Hmm

Even if it were real, you won't know about it because... ... ... you'll be dead! Grin

Dd has come home from school today 'mildly' freaked out by the little shits in her class who have been doing a lot of winding up Hmm

Tamisara · 17/12/2012 16:37

DH has a biopsy on Friday, and I'm supposed to be going with him, leaving DD1 with my mum.

I've been laughing about it, till now. The last few days a few twinges of "what if?" have crept in, to the extent that I was considering letting DH go alone.

The time it's supposed to happen is 11.11GMT, so if we leave at 11.15 then all's well, if not - well we won't know.

MadSleighLady · 17/12/2012 16:47

Am I the only person whose only awareness of this whole thing is via MN? I read lots of news online and listen to the radio a lot (don't watch TV though tbf) and whatever media frenzy is going on has totally passed me by.

I remember reading a post on a science blog somewhere months ago proving why the Mayan calendar thing was bollocks (might have been Ben Goldacre?), and that's it. I haven't heard it mentioned once IRL by anyone.

complexnumber · 17/12/2012 17:13

it keeps being mentioned everywhere- in the news, on TV and on here

Hmm, I seem to have avoided pretty much any mention of it, apart from 'on here'

MadSleighLady · 17/12/2012 17:28

Ha, snap, Complex.

SolidGoldFrankensteinandmurgh · 17/12/2012 22:19

I remember when I was about 10 we had just started learning about Noah's Ark and the Great Flood, and then we had a couple of days of pissing rain and I was a little bit anxious. But that was when I was ten. As an adult, I think it's utterly ludicrous.

Moominsarescary · 17/12/2012 22:24

Exmil told ds2 9 all about it at the weekend and worried him sensless, stupid women.

She also told him mermaids are real, she has seen one and so have lots of other people. Apparently they are people who have learnt to breath under water and grown scales and gills

Lovely walk to school I had this morning

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 22:24

NASA have confirmed that in December 21st, late afternoon, the sky will be very dark. It's an interesting phenomenon called "night".

Binkyridesagain · 17/12/2012 22:26

DS has decided that it will be a zombie apocalypse on the 21st, he has already made various plans, which include releasing all our animals as he has decided that it is better to starve to death in the wild rather than the house. Also because he is a compassionate child he has told DD that if she turns into a zombie he will kill her with her ice scraper.
I don't know whether to be more concerned with the end of the world or with DS's obsession with zombies.
I can't wait for the 22nd, my house might return to 'normal' .

amillionyears · 17/12/2012 22:32

It isnt going to happen. I can guarantee it, if that helps anyone.

But please lets have some sympathy for those people that are worrying. They cannot stop the worrying. They do not want to worry.I dont think they should be laughed at.

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 17/12/2012 22:33

www.2012hoax.org is a very good site about it

But yay to it happening in the morning, I'm going out for my first Black Friday in A Long Time and was worried I'd have to walk home to the DCs if there was any sort of societal breakdown while I was out.
Unless you think taxis would keep running? Xmas Grin

amillionyears · 17/12/2012 22:36

Jokes about it are probably ok though Xmas Grin

ImperialBlether · 17/12/2012 22:37

I had a depressing conversation with a 16 year old student about this:

Her: IB, do you think the world's going to end on the 21st of December?
Me: No. Where's your coursework?
Her: I do.
Me: Really?
Her: Yes.
Me: What are you having for Christmas, Student?
Her: An iPhone!
Me: Aren't you worried then, that you won't get it?
Her: What do you mean?
Me: Well, if you die on the 21st, you won't get it, will you?
Her: Is the 21st before Christmas then?
Me:

thebody · 17/12/2012 22:38

Moonmin,, good grief what a stupid mil...

Oh well might as well down the Christmas booze stash then.

EllieArroway · 17/12/2012 22:38

There are two types of people worrying about this, as far as I can tell - those with genuine anxiety issues, and idiots.

Those with anxiety, I can sympathise with. I suffer with it myself and the things I worry about are equally ridiculous, but such is the nature of anxiety. You can KNOW deep down that your worries are unfounded, but that doesn't stop you feeling sick with worry anyway.

But then there are the idiots who dismiss all available evidence, think they know more than NASA and usually also believe crap like the government is trying to take us all out with flu jabs or that we never walked on the moon. They are morons & I have no time for them.

To anyone who really is worrying - please don't, it's not going to happen. The Mayans did not have access to information that we don't, it's a simple as that. If they knew when the world would end, so would we. And there is simply no indication whatsoever that this will happen. Promise.

teamboleyn · 17/12/2012 23:04

If the Mayans were so good at predicting stuff would they not have been able to predict the Spanish coming and stealing all their gold?

ObscuredByClouds · 17/12/2012 23:14

It's predicted to be a shift in collective conciousness rather than the end of the world.

If that's the case, bring it on I say. Can't exactly carry on the way we are going ad infinitim, can we?

quoteunquote · 17/12/2012 23:25

this was funny

EricNorthmansFangBanger · 17/12/2012 23:50

There is some cuntishness on this thread. Yes, let's call people who are worrying about this loons and idiots Hmm. I am currently suffering from depression and anxiety, I'm also pregnant. I will admit that I have worried about this recently. I don't want to. Deep down I know it's all irrational worrying, but I cannot help it. As much as I try to not worry, sometimes I can't stop that feeling. I don't take kindly to people implying I'm an idiot because I have no control over the feelings I have had. I'm not saying I believe any of this, just that I'm worried. Yet people think its perfectly acceptable to take the piss out of people like me. Charming.

kaylasmum · 18/12/2012 00:03

Just want to say to the op who started this thread that i started the thread about being worried about the 21st, i am by no means an idiot but i do suffer quite badly from anxiety.

I know my thinking is irrational but when in the grip of anxiety its near impossible to think rationally. Believe me feeling like this is no joke.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 18/12/2012 00:17

That's probably why the Op didn't go onto your thread kayla, as she didn't want to upset you.
But there are many of us that think that this whole end of the world thing is ridiculous and deserves to be mocked, and we should be allowed to have a laugh about it.
I'm sorry about your anxiety about this, in a few days you'll see how silly it was, and have a nice Christmas.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/12/2012 00:27

YANBU.

I know I am being thoroughly irrational but end of the world stuff has pushed all my buttons since the world was mean to "end" because an albatross was spotted as per Nostradamus' prediction when I was about 10. My parents banned me from reading newspapers for months after that.

Spiders and the world ending are my button pushers.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/12/2012 00:30

Oddly I like threads like these. Talking to other worriers makes me worry more not less!

ReallyNotTotallyStupidPromise · 18/12/2012 00:38

YABU and nasty.

apostrophethesnowman · 18/12/2012 00:38

Can someone please tell me what time it's going to happen?

Ball park figure will do - morning, afternoon or evening?

I have my Staff Christmas Lunch on Friday afternoon. Won't bother getting dolled up for it if it's going to be cancelled abruptly.
