To wonder how The Hobbit is going to be stretched over three films?

Lord of the Rings, yes. But I can't see how The Hobbit warrants 9 hours of film time. I'm still looking forward to seeing it though!

It is annoying, but in Empire magazine a month or so ago there was a feature and the argument is they didn't want to stifle creativity or scrimp on dramatic scenes, which they felt there were a lot of. Cynical me says box office kerching is the reason. I am looking forward to it, but will have to wait until the New Year to see it.

FierySmaug · 12/12/2012 18:35

I'm not quite sure either. But I'm hoping it means that they've included everything in great detail.
I'm stupidly excited and am re-reading it for the millionth time before we see it next week! Woo Hoo!

GrimAndHumourlessAndEven · 12/12/2012 18:37

yes a slight kerching cyncial feeling here but hey, I've been waiting decades for this

Tw1nkle · 12/12/2012 18:38

Oh no - i didn't realise there will be 3!
I thought it was just the one!

chrismissymoomoomee · 12/12/2012 18:41

I don't know but I am ridiculously excited. I have my tickets booked for the weekend.

minibmw2010 · 12/12/2012 18:42

Looking forward to seeing it though. Love Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage even though he's done up and doesnt really look like himself. Plus Benedict Cumberbatch has voiced loads of it Grin

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 12/12/2012 18:42

By doing what they did to the end of the LOTR sage. Stretch every........last.......moment......out.......for........ever. Boring.

BornInACrossFireHurricane · 12/12/2012 18:42

We're going to watch this tomorrow lunchtime as DH is sad and booked time off work especially

Think it was meant to be 2 films originally

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 12/12/2012 18:43

Richard Armitage, you say? I take everything I said back.

Frankelstein · 12/12/2012 18:45

Ahem , Benedict has acksherly acted both of his parts (The Necromancer and Smaug) through motion capture - a la Andy Serkis as Gollum Grin

That aside, from my understanding Peter Jackson has gone through the appendices from Lord of the Rings and pulled out anything that relates to the chronology of The Hobbit. I agree three films seems a stretch, but I'm looking forward to seeing them all.

Oblomov · 12/12/2012 18:46

I reeally like Martin Freeman. Has he been in anything rubbish? Nope. Thought not.

greenshaker · 12/12/2012 18:47

I think 3 will be overkill.

It was originally suppose to be two.

Anything to make more money.
Look at Harry Potter, Twilight and even Hunger Games - all the last books are split into two films.

That being said I'm excited to watch it Smile

AvengingGerbil · 12/12/2012 18:51

Very, very slowly.

I'm planning to take a book and sit by the exit lights.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 12/12/2012 18:53

It should be good. I love Martin Freeman and Benedict (geek side note for film and Benedict fans, the Star Trek 2 trailer is out). Peter Jackson said he wanted to give it the same love and attention as LoTR. Fellowship will always be one of my fav films.

MotherOfSuburbia · 12/12/2012 18:54

They are adding a load of back story from the Unfinished Tales etc.

MrsReiver · 12/12/2012 18:55

I don't care - 3 films with Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Benedict Cumberbatch AND Aidan Turner in? Yes please!

Cozy9 · 12/12/2012 18:59

According to wikipedia they don't have the rights to Unfinished Tales and are restricted to whats in the Hobbit and LOTR.

Frankelstein · 12/12/2012 18:59

LiitleABruzzenBear, another great thing about The Hobbit is that they will be showing a new Star Rrek 2 trailer before each screening, plus viewers in IMAX cinemas will get the first 9 minutes of Star Trek 2 Envy

OptimisticPessimist · 12/12/2012 19:06

I thought this until I read The Hobbit to DS1 recently. There are quite a few bits in the Hobbit itself that can easily be fleshed out, the book is told from Bilbo's perspective so nearly everything that Bilbo doesn't experience directly (like the Wizard's Council, the casting out of the Necromancer, pretty much half of the final battle...) Tolkien doesn't really go into, so there's plenty of scope there, plus as others said they're using the Appendices from LotR to cover everything that happened in the same time period. I'm very excited, DS1 and I are going together after Christmas Grin

SpanielFace · 12/12/2012 19:18

I'm mega excited! I didn't realise he was using back story from LOTR, that's interesting. It's going to be the first baby-free night out for DH and I, eek! We're going to leaving DS (14 weeks) with his Mum for the evening - it's going to be weird but I'm really looking forward to a night out!

The original Hobbit film was only 77 minutes long.

Frankelstein · 12/12/2012 19:54

But didn't the original Hobbit film (the animation) not actually cover the whole book? I might be thinking of a different version.

hattymattie · 12/12/2012 20:01

DD1 just said that some of the first reviews coming in were saying it was a bit disappointed as nothing much happens. I think they only just get to Rivendell. Sad. I do think three films is overkill.

Frankelstein · 12/12/2012 20:22

No the first film gets past Rivendell, I think it gets them up to Mirkwood. The Daily Mail review mentions the eagles, so they certainly get up to that point.
