To wonder how The Hobbit is going to be stretched over three films?

Lord of the Rings, yes. But I can't see how The Hobbit warrants 9 hours of film time. I'm still looking forward to seeing it though!

I reeally like Martin Freeman. Has he been in anything rubbish? Nope. Thought not.

HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy wasn't all that. Martin Freeman was the best thing about the film though.

hattymattie · 12/12/2012 21:21

Thanks for the link frankel - although he does say the first film gets through 30 pages in 3 hours - bit worried about this new way of filming as well.

MrsReiver · 12/12/2012 21:25

HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy wasn't all that. Martin Freeman was the best thing about the film though.

Alan Rickman's voice is the best thing about that film actually Xmas Grin

elfyrespect · 12/12/2012 21:25

New way of filming?

tbh the trilogy thing is putting me off a bit

hattymattie · 12/12/2012 21:28

apparently it's filmed with an increased number of frames/second which is good for the big middle earth scenes but makes the small scenes seem fake like a "bad tv soap" setting. Also when it was screened in New Zealand apparently this effect made some people feel dizzy. Hmm

DoubleMum · 12/12/2012 22:00

I agree 3 is too many, but still looking forward to them all!

StNickHasHisXmasTeakozyOn · 12/12/2012 22:30

Alan Rickman didn't have to act though. Bored condescension appears to be the default setting for his voice. Xmas Wink

Fecklessdizzy · 13/12/2012 00:03

Everyone's going to speak really, really slowly ... Grin

My entire extended nerd collective of a family plus various friends are all going on Sunday. Squeee! (Sorry ... Blush

LittleAbruzzenBear · 13/12/2012 07:10

Xmas Envy at Feckless. Let us know what you think.

Frankelstein firstly, high-5 for fellow geekishness! That Ralph Bakshi animated film of LoTR was my first introduction to it when I was eight years old. We watched it at school. It stops part-way into The Two Towers, so stops in an odd place doesn't it. I was actually 16 when I read The Hobbit and 19 when I read The LoTR.

Kytti · 13/12/2012 07:17

They only get to Rivendell? Bloody hell.

I also think it's a bit of cheek to do three films. Still want to see it. lol

Merida · 13/12/2012 07:31

As soon as I heard Martin Freeman was Bilbo I realised that's what Bilbo has looked like in my head for all these years. Was gutted when he had to pull out and did a little jig of joy when they managed to work it out and he was back in. :)

HoratiaLovesBabyJesus · 13/12/2012 07:43

The high frame rate apparently takes a while to get used to. The slammed NZ test screening was only 15mins or something.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for long lingering shots of Thorin Oakenshield looking noble.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 07:44

Their going there...but not back again...

::Hobbit humour::

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 07:47

Darnit. Blew my joke with bad grammar.

They're going there...but not back again...

::Hobbit Humour::

Frankelstein · 13/12/2012 07:59

The first film covers up to Chapter 6, so the rescue by the eagles.

Peter Jackson was so adamant that Martin Freeman was the only man to play Bilbo that he shut filming down for 2 months so that he could return to the UK to film the second series of Sherlock.

Have you all watched the production videos on You Tube? There are 8 (I think), each about 15 minutes long, with lots of behind the scenes information. I expect they will put them on the special extended DVDs when they come out!

Frankelstein · 13/12/2012 08:00

BTW:

Xmas Grin
Mimishimi · 13/12/2012 08:05

I can see how. I just hope this means that they do great justice to the book. Which they did, in large part, with LOTR but left out some scenes fans were hoping for. I always preferred The Hobbit to LOTR although both were great. Looking forward to going with our daughter this weekend on her birthday :)

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 08:05

::bows::

I've been dying to use that joke somewhere it would be appreciated. Xmas Grin

samandi · 13/12/2012 08:12

Aren't they bringing in elements from other books too? I think there's plenty for three films. Lord of the Rings could easily have been more films.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 08:18

The Lord of the Rings, books and films, should have been one of each.

Bilbo: here is the ring
Frodo: don't give it to me, give it to the Eagles, they can fly it to Mordor, drop it in, job done.
Bilbo: ::lightbulb::

Eagles fly ring to Mordor. Middle Earth parties.

The End.

(I'm a much bigger fan of The Hobbit as there isn't all that incessant description of walking!!!)

Frankelstein · 13/12/2012 08:42

If you watch the special extended LOTR DVDs - and let's be honest, if you are commenting on this thread you probably have Wink - they say that if Tolkein submitted LOTR to a publisher today, he'd probably be told to go away and rewrite it as he doesn't half waffle on in places Grin

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 13/12/2012 08:43

I've heard they are going to add in a bunch of other stuff that was going on at the same time but isn't actually in the book "The Hobbit". Like for example what was Gandalf doing all that time?

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 08:47

Frank, more like I was forced to by my husband. I personally would love to fast forward through all the walking and just watch the battles!

Grin
GalaxyDefender · 13/12/2012 09:04
Confused How can all people say you like Martin Freeman? The man is a piece of wood! He never changes his expression or tone of voice other than to "generic flustered", which he still does badly.

I was gutted when they said he was going to be Bilbo. Made me kind of not want to watch the film Sad
My mum, who has loved the Hobbit for decades and was really looking forward to the film, agreed, and says she's now only watching it for Richard Armitage Grin

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 09:07

I have a problem with Richard Armitage. His IMDB page makes it look like he played Captain America. Which he did not.

Not Richard's fault, granted. But still...
