To wonder how The Hobbit is going to be stretched over three films?

Lord of the Rings, yes. But I can't see how The Hobbit warrants 9 hours of film time. I'm still looking forward to seeing it though!

honeytea · 13/12/2012 09:14

I saw it last night and it was fantastic! It really didn't feel like we were there for 3 hours.

The way it was shot was a bit strange and I ended up with a headache (but that could be because of my pre eclampsia.)

The people in the cinema all clapped at the end of the film it was very sweet, the only other film I have seen that happen in was the last harry potter film.

I am excited for film number 2!

MrsReiver · 13/12/2012 09:21

StNick He doesn't need to act! I could listen to that man read the phonebook Xmas Wink

So no one else excited about Mitchell the vamp as Kili? All the more sexy Irishman for me.

Bit confuzzled about the Richard Armitage comment - his IMDB clearly says he played Heinz Kruger. The "Actor: Captain America" thing on the google search preview is pretty standard. If you google Tom Hiddleston his IMDB preview says "Actor: Thor"

I think the only person I know more excited about this film then me is my DS who is rereading the book in preparation!

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 09:23

It's because the Captain America poster is under his picture and in the poster it looks a bit like him. For some reason the poster does not look like Chris Evans.

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 13/12/2012 09:23

The more powerful you are the more the ring affects you.

Remember Galadriel looking like a Madonna video?

The eagles could not carry the ring, or carry a hobbit carrying the ring, without being corrupted by its evilness.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 09:25

Oh please, they would have been to Mordor long before the Ring would have affected then.

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 13/12/2012 09:26

I agree about the walking. Am entire half of The Two Towers is made up of: and they walked some more and it was boring and they were tired and hungry and they were a bit scared and they kept walking and Sam made up a poem about potatoes and they walked some more.

hattymattie · 13/12/2012 09:45

Trills Grin.

Have to say - much bonding with my 10 year old DS over this.

Honey - maybe I'll take a Nurofen in advance!

MrsReiver · 13/12/2012 09:51

That poster really doesn't look like Chris Evans does it? Weird.

There are a huge number of online discussions dedicated to the question of the eagles flying the ring to Mordor - the general consensus is it's a plot hole, and the main reason they didn't take the ring is it would have been a pretty crap story if they did Xmas Smile

LittleAbruzzenBearLovesYuleLog · 13/12/2012 10:53

Laughing at Trills and just thought of Gollum 'nasty tatoes'. Helms Deep was awesome in The Two Towers though. I love, love Fellowship though, which I have probably already mentioned.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 13/12/2012 11:10

It really doesn't. His hair looks black, for one thing.

LadyIsabellasHollyWreath · 13/12/2012 11:10

I think YABU because it's pretty obvious that since Tolkein does The Battle of Five Armies in a page-and-a-half, there's easily enough material in the books to fill two movies, and it's widely known that Jackson is importing large chunks of Simarillion to shoehorn in Blanchett and Lee give a fuller picture of the mythos, which will take it up to three films' worth of material, there's a good 6 hours of film to be made from that source material.

Whether there's enough material for 3 three hour films.....we shall see.

almapudden · 13/12/2012 11:12

They cut the homo-erotic bath scene out of LOTR. I was very disappointed. Pippin sings Merry a song about golden showers while Tom Bombadil sits in a corner frantically wanking.

MrsReiver · 13/12/2012 11:25

Cast are being interviewed on This Morning in a bit, the interviews will no doubt be absolutely awful unfortunately Xmas Sad

hattymattie · 13/12/2012 20:20

Bad interviews - how did she get to be a journalist when she doesn't know the difference between "we was" and "we were" and spends her time simpering up to the cast. Very very irritating.

Film reviews don't seem very positive - apparently it's too long and the 48 frame/second thing doesn't work. Sad

nkf · 13/12/2012 20:24

It would make one wonderful film, I heard it was two which I think is stretching it. But three!

MrsReiver · 13/12/2012 20:29

She's simply awful, that business about who had the biggest sword - fnar fnar - had me cringing.

Still Aidan Turner looked beautiful, so I was happy Xmas Wink

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 13/12/2012 22:32

I'd have more of an opinion on it had I not got to our nearest HFR 3D screening today, having booked my tickets a month ago, after a 45 minute drive and 10 minute wait for last parking space in the multi-storey only to arrive at the cinema and be told:

"Sorry, the projector in Screen 5 has broken and we can't show the film."

Angry Angry Angry

Otherwise - it strikes me that 3 films is pushing it, but I haven't actually read the book, and may not do so as I think it may be better to go in to it without expectations.

In any case 3 x the Richard Armitage works for me! Wink

EugenesAxeChoppedDownANiceTree · 13/12/2012 22:55

Thank you LadyIsabella! I got Hobbit spam on FB the other day that asked for questions to put to the 'lovely Cate Blanchett' (or something like), and I wanted to ask "How have you been shoehorned into this film - was it in your contract to be in anything remotely connected with LOTR, like fucking Tilda Swinton and Narnia?"

Anyway as many have said, I heard it's the appendices and events alluded to in The Hobbit (namely, driving out of Sauron from his 'older and lesser dwelling of Dol Guldur') that have dragged out the films. It will presumably be the back work done on Gollum by Gandalf and Aragorn & the work of the dwarfs post reclamation of Dale & Lonely Mountain that provided most of the material/news for The Council of Elrond.

MrsReiver · 13/12/2012 23:12

I believe they've also managed to squeeze Legolas into the last installment.

GrimAndHumourlessAndEven · 13/12/2012 23:19

Oh I wouldn't mind squeezing Legolas

hattymattie · 14/12/2012 07:02

Legolas was the son of Thrandruil - the eleven king of Mirkwood - so he's probably lurking about in the background (waiting to be squeezed).

Very pleased - I'm not the only geek - with in depth LOTR knowledge. If you bring this sort of thing up at coffee mornings people think you're a bit weird.

Frankelstein · 14/12/2012 08:09

I'm sure I read an interview with Peter Jackson in which he said they had done some sums and worked out that Legolas was old enough to have been around during the Hobbit timeline.

Is now a good time to admit I've never actually read LOTR in full? Blush I've just always found it very hard going. I adore the films and have read a lot about the books though

I have come up with a solution though: I've just bought LOTR as an audiobook for my dad, who is blind, so I've made a copy for myself Grin

BelfastBloke · 14/12/2012 08:23

"I'm sure I read an interview with Peter Jackson in which he said they had done some sums and worked out that Legolas was old enough to have been around during the Hobbit timeline."

Well, yeah, given that Elves are immortal, probably.

He's the youngest of all the Elves mentioned in LOTR, but based on internal evidence, best guess that he's between 1000 and 3000 years old.

TeamBacon · 14/12/2012 08:30

As you mentioned the bath scene, almapudden , It looks like it's time to link to this
Grin Wink

Binkyridesagain · 14/12/2012 08:39

I have just learned never ever to ask my DH anything about Tolkien, the hobbit or LOTR ever again.
Me- DH why did the eagles not fly the ring to mordor?
DH- blah blah blah the eagles where like the Americans on WWIi, it was none if their business, blah blah blah, 7 battles, blah blah blah, gsndakf rescued ( unpronounceable name) blah blah blah, he was paid handsomely blah blah , golden crown
5 mins later, ears beginning to melt
Me- oh so gandalf basically called in a favour when the eagles rescued Frodo and Sam.
DH- yes, give me five minutes on the kindle and I'll check the history.

I am hoping and praying he doesn't recite the simarillion to me, I might just LTB
