I didn't get the job because I'm a man and the interviewers were female....

This was said to me by a male temp in the temp job I'm in at the moment. AIBU to be wildly irritated by this?

I'd argue it was largely to do with his blatantly sexist (homophobic and racist) attitudes which I and the other woman on our team picked up on within minutes.

This suggestion was made to use once when I was part of a mental health interview panel.

No, duckie, you were just the most boring and least qualified of all the people who applied.

Tell him he's a tit.

WorraLorraTurkey · 08/12/2012 00:07

YABU to be 'wildly irritated'

Just tell him how he was being blatantly sexist, homophobic and racist.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/12/2012 00:07

My eyes nearly burst out of my head when he said it.

This was after calling feminism "a complete load of wank" and saying to the other woman who is Asian in heritage "oh...I didn't think you would celebrate Christmas" as if skin colour decreed religious denomination! Shock

WorraLorraTurkey · 08/12/2012 00:09

That's not racist...it's ignorant.

Did you give him honest feedback?

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/12/2012 00:09

Worra I don't think he would understand. Upon reading that Call me Dave had backed gay marriage he said "oh well he's destroyed his own party there" and was genuinely shocked that the rest of us were in complete disagreement! Where do these people come from?! He's only 26!

OP posts:
Alisvolatpropiis · 08/12/2012 00:11

I didn't and the other woman was a bit taken aback that he'd made assumptions about her based on her skin colour. This was all in the first half hour of a temp job. We're all desperate for a proper job and don't want to be seen as anything other than lovely and efficient so nothing was said but it was picked up on iyswim?

WorraLorraTurkey · 08/12/2012 00:13

Well I don't know what to say then.

My answer would have been "It's not because you're a man, it's because of XYZ"

And left it at that.

SolidGoldFrankensteinandmurgh · 08/12/2012 00:14

Well you could point out to him that, while he is entitled to hold utterly fuckwitted opinions, airing them in job interviews is what's stopping him getting jobs. In other words, 'Look, young man, most people don't want to employ rude, thick, knobbers...'

soundevenfruity · 08/12/2012 00:20

It's tough to not be offered a job after an interview so it's easier to find something that you can't change about yourself and somehow make it their problem. He won't go far with this kind of attitude but feedback can be quite feeble and not give any clues as to what needs to be changed.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/12/2012 00:22

I did say "are you sure it was just because you"re a man you didn't he the job" but stopped short of adding "because you are a complete and utter cock" so I'm not sure he got it.

I am utterly stunned that there are men my age who hold the same views as previous generations of men,not all of course but generally speaking of men's behaviour historically not individually.

OP posts:
WorraLorraTurkey · 08/12/2012 00:35

There are men and women who hold some utterly outdated views

However, not all of them are stupid enough to display them in a job interview.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/12/2012 00:40

I've no idea what he said in the interview but given his general attitude towards myself and the other woman on the team, I really wouldn't be shocked that it came across just as clearly in that interview.

He seems to have a real chip on his shoulder about women. Another choice comment was "had to fight my way back from lunch through all the benefit scrounging single mums". Surely he must know it's hardly going to endear him to two women?!

Part of me wants to verbally beat him senseless the other part just views him as a disturbing lost cause.

I am pretty sure assuming something about someone based on their skin colour is the actual definition or racism worra

OP, you should have said actually....you're a cock.
