Wont give too many details but my gripe is with tradesmen delaying work that desperately needs doing NOW or at least before Christmas. I have heard so many excuses delaying building work, plans, quotes etc. The latest involves a tractor hitting a telegraph pole and no email or phone and you know what the xmas post is like! no mobile phone?

Anyway AIBU to expect a simple "sorry I forgot/haven't done it yet"?

Yanbu but we get this all year round, to be honest.

If you possibly can, get another person in, preferably a competitor, say you've been let down, they'll love that.

Then phone the original guy, "Sorry, changed our minds, not getting the work done now by you. Cheers, happy new year!"

Do check a trade too - I only hear good about that site. I had similar happen here (was meant to be starting work end Nov but now Feb?!) and I intend to keep hunting for someone else.

the thing is i've known this builder (friend of a friend for yrs. i know he's reasonably priced and has a good rep. i'm just fed up with the delaying tactics and nonsense stories. if he just said. i will do it but can't start untill... i would be tempted to wait.

I think sometimes people take you for a mug. They know you well enough to know you're 'good for' paying up promptly so if they can squeeze in another job or two and bank on you being too nice to kick up they will do so. Loyalty should work both ways. Putting work their way doesn't entitle you to special treatment but they could show some consideration.
