showers EVERY FUCKING MEAL I make in black pepper? Without tasting first?
Just had a row about it because I was unable to bite my tongue on this occasion, having made a delicious spiced carrot and lentil soup (roasted and ground the spices myself, put extra effing chilli and mustard seeds in for him), only to watch as he coated it in pepper and extra chilli before taking a mouthful.
I KNOW he likes a lot of pepper and I wouldn't care if he did this after trying it but he doesn't accept that it's rude. I love salt but I would never add it before tasting a meal.
Really really pisses me off. Can you tell?!

His dinner his rules.

diddl · 05/12/2012 18:41

But if he uses so much pepper-does he even taste the food?

I think I´d be pissed off if I cooked something & someone effectively couldn´t taste it-just the condiment.

Might as well just stick a sliced white loaf in front of him.

IslaValargeone · 05/12/2012 18:41

YANBU I don't like autocondimenting either.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/12/2012 18:42

I'm with HEC please post the video of his reaction somewhere where we can all see it.

wanderingalbatross · 05/12/2012 18:43

I like to add pepper on top of my food - doesn't matter how well seasoned the dish is, it can always be improved with a sprinkle of pepper! Makes it look more appetising too :) wouldn't do it with salt though, I'm not keen on food that's too salty.

valiumredhead · 05/12/2012 18:43

If a man told his dw how much she could season her OWN food, there'd be plenty of LTB's!

diddl · 05/12/2012 18:45

And what Hec said!

MrsGeologist · 05/12/2012 18:46

As an autocondimentor, YABU. Things are rarely Overseasoned enough to my tastes.

I'm aware that to most people, I render a meal indelible by the amount of s&p I put on it, but I just can't help it.

ChunkyPickle · 05/12/2012 18:49

Could be worse. DP knows I don't really like pepper on stuff (with a few specific exceptions) yet still puts a very heavy handed dose in much of the stuff he cooks.

I don't get how they can taste the subtlety when it's smothered in chilli/pepper either (even though I like things pretty hot myself when they're the right things)

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 05/12/2012 18:53

Please make him something with a shit load of pepper in and then wait while he adds his own. If he then finds it vile - lesson learnt. If he happily chops away then you can be smug, safe in the knowledge that he has a crap sense of taste.

LadySybilPussPolham · 05/12/2012 18:56

Crucially - should I leave the bastard?

OP posts:
ihearsounds · 05/12/2012 18:57

I pour hot sauce over everything before I eat with some people. I don't need to taste the food first to know that they don't make it hot enough.
My friends don't taste my food first before adding salt, because they know I never add enough for their liking.

HoHoBrandyButter · 05/12/2012 19:21

Yes. LTB and a trail of peppercorns to the nearest recipe book

Bunbaker · 05/12/2012 19:23

"I would have to say that YABU because I do this with salt, I never taste food first"

But why not? I never season food without tasting it first. I like salt on my food, but don't like it too salty.

schoolgovernor · 05/12/2012 19:24

Condimenty Fucker.
Leave the bastard!

squeakytoy · 05/12/2012 19:24

I put fresh black pepper on almost everything I eat.. because I want to and because I like the taste of it.

Chandon · 05/12/2012 19:37

My dad does this.

We tease him, and say " here are the painkillers" whilst handing him the tabasco. He is a smoker, and smokers have bad old palates.

Is your h a smoker?

Maybe you could sprinkle some valium on yours when he does it next Wink

They should include it in the Dine n for Two offer, really.

I was in an Italian restaurant on Monday, the waiter asked if I wanted black pepper on my pasta as it was served. Was he being rude about the chefs cooking, or was I being rude by not tasting first? Grin

It's not something worth having an argument about, a joke maybe.

tisnottheseasonyet · 05/12/2012 19:53

Are there any other red flags your DH should be noticing about your controlling behaviour OP?

And is passive aggressive food sabotage the new official mumsnet advice for controlling your partner healthy relationships?

strumpetpumpkin · 05/12/2012 20:00

i can tell before tasting whether its got enough pepper in it. If its not covered in pepper, it needs more.. Why would i taste it first?

SilverBaubles33 · 05/12/2012 20:05

The reason is that if it is edible for normal people, I need to salt it.

Me too. I would like a salt lick for Christmas.

In my case, it's hypercondimenting..

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/12/2012 20:12

How can it be rude to like your food differently to someone else? It's only food.

tisnottheseasonyet · 05/12/2012 20:15

Outraged I wonder what other normal behaviour her DH is beat down over for being "rude"?
