Just watching the Autumn Statement on Sky news.
Sitting on the opposition bench next to Millaband is a young women with shoulder length dark hair, in her 30,s. She is wearing a greeny/yellow jacket. Sorry I have no idea who she is.
I think it is really disrepectful that for the last 30mins that I have been watchging she has been txting from her phone on her lap. In full view of the Chancellor, Prime minister etc
Call me old fashioned but women fought hard to become MP,s and she shouldn,t be txting during this statement.

I don't blame her for texting whilst Balls is talking! His response is awful!! Though I do agree with you.

SantaJaxx · 05/12/2012 13:40

What has her being a woman got to do with it?

LRDtheFeministDude · 05/12/2012 13:41

Particularly 'women' MPs? Confused

TBH I don't really get why she shouldn't. I've no idea - maybe it's important?

It's not 'old fashioned' what you're saying - you're saying, if I understand you correctly, that you're willing to hold women to a higher standard than men because they 'fought hard' to become MPs?

That's a bit discriminatory, isn't it?

It shows a complete lack of respect IMO
However somehow it makes it worse that she is a young well dressed women showing such disregard to her position.
She must know she has been live on TV for the last hour!

I was beaten to it! Why is being a woman an issue? Just because we finally got the "right" to ecome mps? Come on. Btw he is a boring git I don't blame her for texting.

LRDtheFeministDude · 05/12/2012 13:42

Btw, I do wonder whether, had you seen a man texting, you wouldn't have thought 'ah, he must be sending an urgent message' rather than assuming without knowledge that it was something inappropriate to the situation.

Given the way twitter works it's pretty obvious that politicians do interact with the outside world while listening to other politicians speaking.

LemonBreeland · 05/12/2012 13:42

She may be tweeting. She may also be typing notes on what he is saying. My boss uses his blackberry to record notes of meetings he attends.

JaneFonda · 05/12/2012 13:43

YABU.

Women shouldn't be 'grateful' about having the right to be an MP - it is a right!

What would you say if it was a male MP?

The amount of male, (and probably female) MPs that you see sleeping during speeches etc. is quite funny actually. :o

How do you know she was texting, and not making notes or something?

Lesbeadiva · 05/12/2012 13:43

grovel · 05/12/2012 13:43

Ed Balls is truly awful today.

The 50s called, they want their opinions back.

NoKnidForABed · 05/12/2012 13:44

Maybe she's on Mumsnet?

lurkedtoolong · 05/12/2012 15:48

YAB so ridiculously U I don't know where to begin. Are you a journalist looking for a story that MNers attacked a young female MP?

JaneFonda - an MP friend of my DM once told me that it's a common misconception that MPs are often asleep in the chamber. Because the room is old and it's always noisy the acoustics are really bad and it's difficult to hear. The speakers are built into the backs of the seats and MPs lean back to hear better and it looks like they are leaning back to snooze.
