I work in a kitchen and my boss has asked me to go in tonight so she can go through the christmas specials with me.

I dont have a problem with this but I have to pay quite a bit so go in on the bus/taxi and I'm not being paid for going in.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed and feel that my boss should really have built this training into a normak wirking day so I am not out of pocket?

Yanbu - I'd expect to be paid and you should also expect it.

Whocansay · 03/12/2012 12:05

Say it's not possible as its your day off. Make up some plans if you have to. They shouldn't be asking you to go in. They shouldn't even be contacting you on your day off.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 03/12/2012 12:07

Well just say that as it is a day off and you will incur charges that you wont get back then no, you can't go in.

Either they pay for your time/travel expenses or your boss will have to wait and go through the specials with you when you are actually scheduled to be in work.

YANBU, especially if you won't get paid. If its the kind of place you can ask for buses/taxis to be paid then go in if you can, if not then say you have plans that can't be changed.

I own a restaurant and we had our staff meeting for Christmas I paid their wage.

extremepie · 03/12/2012 12:22

I think I just feel a bit awkward asking to be paid for the time/travel - the owners are cutting hours back everywhere as it is winter and quiet (closing early & all) so I feel pretty sure they would say no.

If they dont pay me and I say I cant go in they will moan at me for not being 'dedicated' enough! Feel like I cant win :-(

At the end of the day you work to live not live to work.

You don't do a job purely for the love, you do it because it pays the bills, if you enjoy that's a bonus.

"the owners are cutting hours back everywhere as it is winter and quiet (closing early & all) so I feel pretty sure they would say no." - so you can't afford to go in and lose your time and money just as much as they can't afford to pay you extra?

NigellasGuest · 03/12/2012 12:25

can your boss go through the Christmas specials with you over the phone, or by email? I've no experience of working in a restaurant so i've no idea really whether this is feasible, but could be?

extremepie · 03/12/2012 12:31

I think technically it is possible but she wants to showxme how they are plated up etc..

I do have other things to do today that dont involve going in that direction, maybe I should just go in and clock in automatically - if they say anything I could just say that I assumed they were going to pay me :-)

Just tell them it is not a case of being dedicated, it is a case of being skint and you cannot afford to pay out in fares when you are not getting paid.

You dont work for love, you work for money......they are being unreasonable if they expect you to fork out and go into work on your own time and if they are making cut backs then they should understand about being skint.

Just be firm! They will respect you for it more anyway, sometimes with employers with more you give, the more they wipe their feet on you.

extremepie · 03/12/2012 12:38

I think you are right Betty, I think the only reason they are asking is because I did it once before - I didnt realise they were going to make it a regular thing! Am stressed up to the eyeballs at the moment anyway as I'm moving on friday too and trying to get stuff sorted for that so I really need my spare time.

Think I may just have to put my foot down!

I would extreme or they will just take it for granted that you will go in everytime they summon you.
