to want a lap swimming lane

I go swimming every now and then, usually during the weekend. I get so fed up with people (especially with children) that play in the 25 m pool in the middle of the pool, swim across without looking if there are swimmers arriving the other way, play with a ball, take up lots of space for "acrobatic" swimming.

I am not a fast swimmer, but I like to go for just 30 minutes to exercise, to do a few laps. There is never a lane designated for lap swimming. And even the instructor make the little student swimmers go across the pool, not along the 25 m length (I understand why - the depth changes across the 25 m, but not the other way, so the little swimmers are safe when they swim in the shallow end).

Nobody else gets annoyed at this? Am I just getting old and grumpy?

I would be very surprised if there aren't scheduled lap lane times.

Have you actually looked at a schedule? Or are you just turning up in the middle of a Sunday and being surprised to find that that's when parents are there with their children?

It does sound like you are going at the wrong time. It will be full of children having fun at the weekend.

RyleDup · 02/12/2012 22:36

That sounds very annoying. The pool I go to has 3 lanes, 1 for slow, 1 for fast, and 1 for somewhere in the middle. Can't you find a different pool?

No lap swimming times during the weekend, not in this pool or in the other council pools nearby. I choose not to go to the nearest pool as that one is so busy with children it's impossible to swim a lap without having to stop because somebody moved in your path. And i don't want to spend lits of money for a private club pool.

The only lap swimming times are in the evening, after 7.30, but nothing during the weekend. Should I post a suggestion through the suggestion box?

our pool does lanes early sat am before the lessons start and on sunday after 5pm

who would have thought that children would want to play in a pool at the weekend???

LRDtheFeministDude · 02/12/2012 23:23

I think it is a little odd not to have some lap time, even during the weekend. Surely children wouldn't be there in the evening, so why not ask for that? Or does the pool shut early?

If you don't let them know you'd like it they can't know!

TraineeBabyCatcher · 02/12/2012 23:24

I understand your frustration. And I can see both sides. We have no lane swimming at the weekend which makes exercise impossible for me at the weekend for all the reasons you say.
I dont think it would be unreasonable to put in 1 lane for lane swimming at least once over the weekend however it would be unreasonable to cut short any period of time for swimming for families as weekends are when most families can go.

albachiara · 02/12/2012 23:34

I would be so happy with one lane, only one lane, for all the lap swimmers, and the families /children could have the rest of the pool! I think I will suggest it...
