To think they should leave the eff alone with 'The Power of Love'

Ok, we all know the score with the breathy girl versions of classic songs for John Lewis ads. And we all know James Arthur should win X Factor.

But can we all take the time to listen again to Frankie's version of 'The Power of Love'. Because noone can sing this song like Holly Johnson.

It was playing on a loop at the store entrance the other day. I felt really, really sorry for the security guards.

AuntieShirley · 01/12/2012 22:22

100% agree. The new version by whoever she is lacks the passion of the original. I love the original.
The original always makes me cry. My best friend played this down the phone at me on NYE 2000, as he was spending it away. He died a year later, and it always makes me think of him.
Paloma has also wrecked Never Tear Us Apart imo.

redlac · 01/12/2012 22:23

Totally agree! I was practically frothing at the mouth at the murder of The Smiths on the Jihn Lewis ad last year.

I Always say there should be a vault somewhere that holds songs that no one is allowed to cover

OpheliaPayneAgain · 01/12/2012 22:24

that advert irritates the shit out of me - he should have ordered on line and saved us a minute of misery.

Onebadbackandalostpelvicfloor · 01/12/2012 22:25

I like the new version Blush who is it by?

Greensleeves · 01/12/2012 22:25

I was irate enough after his horse-arsing around with "One" which is one of my favourite songs Angry

but then to take a great cheese-clogged steamy dump over The Power of Love... hanging's too good for him

at least it has eclipsed the sour mood I was in from watching that fucking advert with the snowman.

Greensleeves · 01/12/2012 22:25

x-posted with everyone

Growlithe · 01/12/2012 22:26

I will never forgive them for 'Never Tear Us Apart' either.

Why are they taking all the really powerful songs and reducing them to the same breathy girly style? What's it all about?

itchychin · 01/12/2012 22:33

There was a funny article by Charlie Brooker re xmas adverts and the breathy girl style. Said it was only a matter of time before we'll be listening to fey breathy versions of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine.

lifeintheolddogyet · 01/12/2012 22:34

It's the blandification of everything. EVERYTHING I tell you.

There. I'm off to bed now. Grin

Greensleeves · 01/12/2012 22:35

What's next? Holly Steele doing Bat Out Of Hell?

That and the corny "French" accents in all the perfume ads, and smirking women fellating chocolate bars

Onebadbackandalostpelvicfloor · 01/12/2012 22:36

I'd love to hear a breathy version of a five finger death punch song just to piss my man off Grin

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 01/12/2012 22:37

I hate it. HATE IT.

Is it by that same ghastly girl who sang that Jar of Hearts dirge?

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 01/12/2012 22:38

And am I the only person who cannot BEAR Beyonce's voice? She sounds like a bag of cats. Yet in RL people look Hmm at me when I say I think he singing voice is unpleasant to listen to. That godforsaken 'what goes around comes around' travesty was on the radio earlier and I had to turn it off.

Growlithe · 01/12/2012 22:42

See the thing is, if I could sing (and I can't), I would want to sing it with the power of the original. You'd want to rise to it.

OP posts:
AuntieShirley · 01/12/2012 22:48

Growlithe the new one is no fun to sing along to either. Rubbish.

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 01/12/2012 22:50

I would like to hear a breathy girly kooky version of Hit Me With Your Rhythm stick

2madboys · 01/12/2012 22:52

Grrr - changing the Never Tear us Apart sax solo for a guitar - what's that all about?!!! Angry

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 01/12/2012 22:56

ahem I have a copy of Fairytale of New York by Ronan. Fecking. Keating.

.

Growlithe · 01/12/2012 23:07

Trazzle Why?

I want to cry when I hear rubbish cover versions of songs I really like, I too nearly fell off my chair when I heard the Smiths "Please let me get what I want".I detested Leona Lewis's horendous version of Snow Patrol's song and I really disliked Adele singing Dylans "Feel My Love".The worst ever cover has to be Ed Sheran's version of "The Watchtower", watch it and you will weep and I quite like Ed but this is so wrong.

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 01/12/2012 23:12

A question I ask myself every Christmas...

I bought Now! The Christmas Album!

It's on there.

I cry with shame every time I hear it. They changed the lyrics and everything

Actually half the songs on there are covers... Billie Piper(!) doing Last Christmas...

toofattorun · 01/12/2012 23:17

Hear Hear OP!

Holly Johnson is the only one worthy to sing that song!

Growlithe · 01/12/2012 23:21

God yes mum Snow Patrol's Run always reminded me of my dad as he was in the hospice and I used to play there album on the way. I think these versions debase the originals, its not fair.

Another bad one was when that X Factor guy did the Biffy Clyro one. An obviously heartfelt personal song, stomped all over.

hellymelly · 01/12/2012 23:31

My dd was born to that song (the original one). The surgeon had the radio on while I had my c-section and as it was near Christmas it came on. So I feel very sentimental about it, but I do love the JL ad.
