Aibu that the post lady was being unfair?

Went into a very busy post office to collect a parcel, there were at least 10 people in front and about 15 people behind. Was doing a bit of people watching as you do, people in front were handing their red cards over and a few minutes later the parcel arrives. I was pleased as I didn't have any I'd on me (but have never needed it to get a parcel before)

Gets to me and I hand over my red card and wait, she brings it out and then asks for picture ID, to which I say I'm sorry I don't have any, I'm moving house and passport/driving license are packed.

She replies well you better go and unpack them and come back when you do, I explain I won't be in the area
As moving 3 hours away. She says its my own fault and the parcel will have to stay with her.

I then very calmly asked why are you just asking me and no one else?! She replies with a smile on her face "I'm in charge and so I can do what I bloody well like"

I'm in shock and so angry, I get my phone out and while I'm on the phone next person gets their parcel with no ID

Aibu - that she was really unfair for no reason?!!

Yes, she was being unfair but, unfortunately, you should have ID to pick up a parcel so there is nothing you can do.

I would pay the £1.50 to have the parcel redelivered to a PO near my new address.

Mine don't ask for photo ID, just a letter or debit card.

She did sound slightly rude though, have you read the back of the card. What does it say?

You are supposed to have ID.

Is it possible that the post lady knew the other people - some people go very often, if they work and their parcels are delivered during the day or something - so she didn't need their ID?

That's the only reason I can think of that she'd need yours (as she didn't recognise you) but wouldn't ask to see theirs.

You only need the card part of your driving license that you carry around with you, not the paper part, if you've got that on you?

I don't have a car right now so I wouldn't of had it one me anyway and its now all packed away in a important document box

And the parcel didn't have a return to sender on it either, really annoyed!

Parcel doesn't require ID - postman crossed out needs ID section and circled to big for letter box

Not sure what I can do now?!

Double check what ID has to be shown. Then report her if she was being deliberately awkward.

From Royal Mail site. Clearly not all are photo ID. It should say on the back of the red card what you need.

You?ll need to take proof of your identity to the Post Office® or Delivery Office when you collect your item. If someone?s collecting on your behalf, they?ll need to provide proof of your identity. We will accept the following original forms of identification:

Cheque guarantee/credit/debit card
Bank/building society book
Valid passport
Cheque book
Driving licence
Photo Identity Card (Foreign National, Military, Police Warrant, Royal Mail Employee)
Under 18s (National Insurance Card, Medical Card or Savings Book)

You need ID, but you don't need photo ID - a credit or debit card is fine.

She was being a bitch. I've never been asked for anything other than a bank card (and sometimes not even that). I'm not normally one for suggesting complaining about someone, but in this case I'd complain. (But get your parcel redelivered first, just in case!)

I do take ID with me to pick up parcels but have never been asked for it. Did she swear at you? If she did I would complain about that at least. Sounds like she was taking a stressy day out on you tbh. Go back with as much ID as possible and the list that Soupdragon posted and insist she follows her own employers rules..

I have always had to produce ID, normally a bank card.

A debit or credit card - anything with your name on, so they can match the name on the parcel to the name on the card should do. I've taken my debit card, and picked up stuff for my sons (now aged 3 and 1, so they didn't have much ID), and they are happy as the name matches.

The card says you need to show ID usually. I think we only get asked for ID if its a sign for parcel or special delivery type parcel.

I'd forget all about her, and go back and try again - she may not even be on, but I bet she won't recognise you.

Unfortunately i am about 3 hours away from post office now, as have moved house. So am wondering if I phoned up the post office can they get it sent to new house? Parcel is only worth about £5 but still I have brought and paid for it.

It was the fact I needed photo ID - didn't understand why?!!

You can arrange to have it delivered to a post office for a fee but I'm not sure about having it delivered to another address.

i always take the PO option as it's still cheaper than driving to and parking at my collection office.

I have picked up loads of parcels from both the sorting office and the post office. I always have ID with me and have never been asked until my most recent visit. I wasn't very happy because they do know me and I felt that for some reason they were suddenly being difficult. They didn't ask for photo ID though. Just as well as my passport has expired and my driving license is an old paper one. I went outside to see what I had in the car and they accepted my car insurance documents. I doubt they can insist on photo ID as not everyone has it, so I'd complain if I were you.

The card should have a umber on iy. You can go online and use that to get it redelivered, they wont send iy to your nrw addy i dont yhink.but yoi can choise a post office to.have it sent to, so choose one near your new house?

My son lives abroad and has things delivered to our house. Sometimes, if I'm out when an attempted delivery is made and a card is left, I have to go and collect it. I'm never asked for identification of any sort even though it's address to a male and I'm a female. There's something wrong here.

Bit odd that she just asked you and no one else for ID. If she was going to do her jobs worth job properly she should ask everyone!
Though it does clearly say on the back of those red cards to bring your ID, so you can't really argue that one as you wouldn't want someone else stealing your post but why pick on just you though?

And it doesnt have to be photo id, can.be bills, bank statement, bank card etc.

Their rules seem.flexible as my dp recently collectef a parcel addtessed to me. We are not marrief so different name but our address is the same, they didnt ask for id but he had taken a bill with bith names and addresses on.

I went to collect a parcel today and one member of staff (lady) was asking for ID and one wasn't (man).
I didn't have any ID on me so was praying that the man would serve me.
He did and he didn't ask for any ID

Very odd that you needed photo id. I've only ever need my credit card as proof of id when collecting from my post office or sorting office. Which is handy as I always have my credit card in my purse.
