If I'm honest they annoy me, mess up my tree and don't let me get on with it so I had a bright idea to do it tonight and pretend our christmas fairy (whos coming and bringing their advant calenders tomorrow) could put the decs up tonight ready for the 1st tomorrow.

I used to get a bit annoyed that the kids didn't decorate the tree how I thought it should be done but then I got over myself and they decorate it together each year. Looks fabulous. So I would say YABM (mean) to not let them do it.

ifyouknowme · 30/11/2012 18:33

Aw it's part of Christmas to put up the tree altogether. YABU.

Pancakeflipper · 30/11/2012 18:34

I think you are mean. Going through the box of decs is tradition. Put them in charge of tinsel you old Grinch.

InNeedOfBrandy · 30/11/2012 18:34

I'm going to let them decorate their own £5 asda tree, does that not go some way in my favour to be able to do the main tree...

Ummm .... Add in some paper chain making and hanging and I might retract my harsh Grinch name calling.

SingingTunelessly · 30/11/2012 18:37

Aww let them help. Honestly in years to come you WILL look back in fondness. Although I am still reeling from the time DD1 aged 4 stepped on a bulb and cut her foot open.....

MikeLitoris · 30/11/2012 18:38

Yabu.

My dc trash my tree every year but they have so much fun doing it.

I just wait for them to go to bed before i re do the whole thing.

kenanddreary · 30/11/2012 18:38

I don't think YABU. I used to have such fairytale visions of putting up tree and decorations - I got mince pies and drinks ready, played Christmas music and got very excited...and every year it turned into a nightmare with DC arguing, getting bored, decorations being flung around the tree with no artistic thought Angry. The last straw was the cat getting tangled up in the baubles and running through the house smashing the lot.

This year I will be doing it alone and we will all get along just fine Wink

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 30/11/2012 18:38

YABU

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 30/11/2012 18:39

I hate it when they mess up the tree, but I make myself let them get on with it. You can always do what I do and tidy it up when they have gone to bed. Only a little bit, mind...

Iggly · 30/11/2012 18:39

YABU Scrooge

purpleraindance · 30/11/2012 18:40

yabu.... poor kids.....

SauvignonBlanche · 30/11/2012 18:44

YABU, what a meanie!
it's too early anyway

Rollergirl1 · 30/11/2012 18:44

I know what you mean about it not being done quite how you want it but as others have said you can alway re-arrange when they're not around.

DD (6) stated out of the blue earlier today that the day we decorate the tree that she wants me to do nibbles and party food and have christmas music on for when we're doing it. I think I did this a few years ago and she obviously has fond memories. I would hate to deprive her of that.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 30/11/2012 18:48

How old are they?

Rollergirl1 · 30/11/2012 18:50

And it is too early. Why would you want a dead tree in your house for a month? Wink

RightUpMyRue · 30/11/2012 18:54

YABU and a bit mean too. Let them do their worst and then re-do it once they're in bed.

laalala · 30/11/2012 18:55

Yabu I'm 19 and moved out of home and i'm still gutted that my mums putting hers up without me and not waiting for me. Hmm

purplewithred · 30/11/2012 18:57

YABVU! Let them do it. You can do it tastefully when they have left home.

freddiefrog · 30/11/2012 18:58

YABU

Mine help, the once they've gone to bed I move it all around so we don't have two hundred baubles on 1 square foot of tree

Ours is a bit mismatched anyway, every year we take the DCs out to choose a couple of new dec so there's all sorts of stuff on there

MrsHoarder · 30/11/2012 18:58

I really can't find a clip of it, but you have reminded me of a Friends episode where they all decorate the tree together and then at the end it is turned so only Monica's side is on display.

This gives a less charitable view of why DM used to get me to decorate aroudn the back. She claimed she couldn't reach there...

crunchbag · 30/11/2012 18:58

YABU, here the kids are in charge of decorating the tree and they get better at it every year. I am in charge of the chocolate baubles....

wonderingsoul · 30/11/2012 19:00

i to am anal about the living room tree..

they have thier own 5 ft tree in their room which they got to decorate. they also did my mums 7 ft tree..

i had half a mind of just doign the living room one myself...but i felt to mean so after ds2 (3) had gone to bed i let ds1 (7) "help" me.. by help i mean i seperated all the colours to go in order so he could place them eveninly apart.ie ..all the purple... then the sliverss..

im buying new lights tomorrow so shallo do it all over again lol.

tbf their room is full of christmass tac which gets added to if we see something. i am taking them to buy a decoration each tomorrow and a tacky singing animal.. and we still have dec to put up in the living room and papper chains and snowflakes to make.

Startail · 30/11/2012 19:06

YANBU
Last year was the 1st year I really let the DDs do any major tree decorating.

They were 13 & 10. I have far too many very special glass baubles to allow little fingers getting involved.

Also I am still traumatised by the checked tree incident.

DH ran half the bead chains vertically and half horizontally, it looked like the tree was wearing tartan or else it was covered in a net.

It was quite wrong!

InNeedOfBrandy · 30/11/2012 19:08

There 5 and almost 7

I really like the idea of having nibbles, xmas music and copious amount of bailys while doing it.

We have already made peg angels and snowman sun catchers tat and will be doing snow flakes and paper chains. I just want the tree to myself Sad
