To leave baby sleeping outside in -3C ?

he's in a few layers of normal clothes. A cost suit which I think has down in it. A fleece buggy cosytoes. And I just went out and put extra blanket on.

He seems to sleep better outdoors. But it is starting to get really cold. It's very frosty this morning.
I could take him into house, but he's likely to be woken by his big brother. And he's likely to get hot with so many layers on.

I'm sorry - I thought this was a joke.
I don't mean to be horrible but there is no way I would leave my baby outside for no reason. Is it a joke?

Anothercuppatea · 30/11/2012 09:42

I went to get him as he'd woken up. He certainly seems warm. Might be an idea to get a sheepskin liner though.

I also thought this was a joke.

juule · 30/11/2012 09:45

I put mine out for a sleep in all weathers except fog.
In freezing weather they would be well wrapped up e.g. snow suit over their normal clothes, woolly hat, gloves, padded cosytoes with an extra blanket I've the top.
If you are worried he is cold check a couple of accessible places to make sure he is warm enough, like the side of his neck or top of his head.

Fakebook · 30/11/2012 09:47

Ah yes. The solver of all known problems to man; the sheepskin liner.

juule · 30/11/2012 09:49

Calypso there is a reason. Op said he would be disturbed by older sibling if asleep inside.
I know that was one of the reasons for me letting mine sleep outside. Other reasons were that they slept better and I was also told that the fresh air was good for their health.

calypso2008 · 30/11/2012 09:51

OK, well - each to their own.
Personally I think it is U and odd - but I am clearly in the minority.

ladygrieg · 30/11/2012 09:52

In Norway you'll find nurseries and parents up and down the country leaving children of all ages (from small babies to toddlers) to nap in their buggies, outside in up to minus 10 degrees. This has been done for decades and longer. As you can imagine, quite a lot of research has gone into figuring out what is a safe temperature and not to sleep outside in. If the child is properly wrapped up, with good air circulation and checked on regularly I don't see a problem at all.

GhostShip · 30/11/2012 09:55

Calypso it's probably a cultural thing, because I find it strange too. I don't know much about it so I can't possibly say its wrong, just not something I'd do personally. Doubt the mothers of this thread would put their babies at risk.

I couldn't imagine leaving a baby outside in a pram in the council estate I live in though.

tryingtoleave · 30/11/2012 09:55

I can't understand why you would go to so much trouble to wrap a baby up when you could just put them to sleep inside? Surely shutting the door to the room would have the same effect in cutting down noise as putting them outside?

Herrena · 30/11/2012 09:55

I thought it was a joke initially, but having read through I suppose it isn't much different to if you're out walking with the buggy! I would have the raincover up so that the air inside the buggy could warm up a little, but I see OP has done that.

Overall OP, I consider that YANBU :)

cakeandcava · 30/11/2012 09:57

I'm another Norwegian that don't see what the problem is. Just wrap him up well, it is good for them to be out in the fresh air.

HazleNutt · 30/11/2012 09:57

I'm also from Northern Europe and it would be considered completely normal and healthy.

SugaricePlumFairy · 30/11/2012 09:57

Mine would sleep in the back garden, never on the front where the pram could be seen.

Nothing wrong with a well protected baby sleeping outside other than in foggy damp weather.

naturalbaby · 30/11/2012 09:59

I know someone who's baby slept like this for daytime naps - buggy in the garden in the middle of winter.
I went out last night and my toddler was wrapped up warm in cosy toes etc but when I got him out his arms and legs were still cold. We were out for a few hours though.

Babies outside in Scandinavia

OwlLady · 30/11/2012 09:59

it isn't the 1950's you know :o

calypso2008 · 30/11/2012 09:59

Ghostship - I agree with you, I am sure OP is not putting her baby at risk - I just, like you, find it a wierd concept. There again, like you, I wouldn't leave my baby outside anyway!

One child inside warm and other outside in case other child disturbs? Is there not a bedroom?

I just don't get it. But, as I said, I probably don't know what I am talking about - this is just my opinion.

calypso2008 · 30/11/2012 10:01

That's what I was thinking OwlLady Grin

Fakebook · 30/11/2012 10:01

Why can't you open a window? Or all the windows in the room? Why put him outside? Alone?

puds11 · 30/11/2012 10:02

My mum left my sister outside once, when she went out to get her she was covered in snow. My sister was fine.

pofacedalways · 30/11/2012 10:02

No just Norway, our Danish and Swedish friends used to do the same thing

pofacedalways · 30/11/2012 10:02

Not just

juule · 30/11/2012 10:02

Mine all slept better outside.

Fakebook · 30/11/2012 10:04

See, I think that's pussy footing around a baby who should get used to household noise. But that's my opinion. My baby sleeps through hoovering, phone calls and shouty dd.
