To not want my ears blown off with loud music in restaurants

I was out for a meal last night with some friends I hadn't seen for ages and we could hardly talk because of the loud music. We asked a couple of times for it to be turned down and saw a couple at another table doing the same, but within a few minutes it was turned back up again.
Most of the staff on duty were quite young -possibly students working part time - and seemed to be playing this music for their own enjoyment.
AIBU to think that staff are there to work and paying customers are there to enjoy themselves and do not want to listen to loud head banging studenty music in restaurants.

Music in these places should be 'background music' - the name speaks for it self.

valiumredhead · 27/11/2012 14:13

I can't bear it either!

YANBU.
Also, a certain popular tapas chain could do with turning the lights up, I am fed up of having to take my torch!!

PurpleTinsel · 27/11/2012 14:44

YANBU.

I also find this very annoying. If I go out to a restaurant, I want to be able to have a chat with the people I'm eating with.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/11/2012 14:46

Were you in TGI's OP? They're terrible for it.

YANBU - I like to be able to hold a conversation with the people I am eating out with, not shout until everyone gives up.

Janeatthebarre · 27/11/2012 14:52

No, not TGIs. It's not a restaurant that would attract a particularly young clientele but the staff are all young part timers. There didn't seem to be an older manager there last night and they were basically just playing music they enjoyed, at a volume they enjoyed, and ignoring customer requests. One brat even tried to convince us that the volume didn't go down any lower!

Email their head office and complain.

I have walked out of restaurants for this...sometimes after ordering the meal. It used to be very common in the 80's and 90's but Seems to be less so now.

Vote with your feet.

I don't like loud music in restaurants or cafes. I wantto be able to talk without raising my voice.

YANBU.
