To expect an apology -or acknowledgement at least -from Tesco

I was in our local Tesco superstore yesterday afternoon.

Naturally it was thronged but there were lots of staff milling around answering questions etc.

I went to look at the Kindles as I might get one for Christmas.I was horrified to find hard core gay porn movie playing on one of the Kindle Fires. This was on the main display on the main aisle not on the smaller on in the side aisle. I have never seen gay porn before and felt really shocked to my core.Really shaky if you know what I mean.

Not wanting to leave the machine unattended, I tried to get the attention of one of the milling staff but they were too wrapped up in a deep conversation with a customer about phones and I felt deliberately didn't catch my eye .I then hot footed it to the customer services but it was several deep with people returning items etc.

I actually hopped from foot to foot in agitation as I fully expected some young teenager to have discovered the movie by now as it was so accessible.

Finally I got a young female staff member to follow me to the kindles .She was also really shocked and ran to get another staff member.He shrugged and told her to just turn it off.She ran back and yanked the machine from its moorings( the alarm didnt even go off !) and took it away.

I was sort of shadowing her to make sure steps were taken but she nor the man acknowledged me at all .


AIBU to ask Tesco for an apology and undertaking that this sort of thing will not happen again. I am going cold with the thought that on almost any other Saturday it could have so easily have been DD (12) seeing that movie.

I was, and still am, pretty shocked. Please dont tell me I should accept gay porn as a normal part of a Saturday afternoon shopping experience.

I don't think it would have been Tesco policy to showcase that particular website, so not really their fault.

Oh I know they do. But I don't know that the OP wants to. And to assume it and say it on here is quite presumptuous, because frankly a lot of people who do that sort of thing are horrible people.

And the OP might not be a horrible person who only thinks about money.

Yes you are right to have been concerned and done something but yabu to have expected to be served quicker or to think the staff were deliberately ignoring you. The apology is a bit odd. Did you want the staff to stop dealing with the problem to take your details to issue an apology? Or just get on with removing the offensive material?

Apparently the new Kindles have excellent parental controls which I expect the store in question has found. If you really want to help fix the problem then perhaps email tesco customer service and suggest they may want to communicate to all stores how to access those settings in light of this incident? I would expect them to reply and you'll get your apology and a thank you for bringing it to their attention.

If you expect any more then you would be vvvu. The fact it was gay porn is irrelevant and as an adult you need to get over what is a very unfortunate incident but ultimately not the end of the world.

Though I'm pretty unshockable, I totally understand how the OP and many other people would find this shocking and distressing (not because it's gay porn, but because it's not appropriate for general viewing when you're doing your shopping!), and I can also understand why she'd like more of a reaction from Tesco - something along the lines of 'thanks for bringing this to our attention, we'll take action to make sure this doesn't happen again, we're really sorry it upset you, and here's £5/a voucher/box of chocolates/whatever to make up for it'. I can't see anything outrageous about that. She did them a favour by alerting them to it.

I'd have been happy with a verbal acknowledgment and thanks for spotting it, and some kind of explanation as to how it happened.

It doesn't sound like the OP got any kind of response at all apart from someone taking it away.

Want to add you should have interrupted the staff member talking to a customer. A simple "I'm terribly sorry to interrupt but you need to do something about this Kindle immediately. It is showing pornography" would have been more effective than hoping to catch his eye.

I don't understand why you feel you need an apology. It wasn't Tesco's fault that it was on the Kindle and as soon as it was brought to their attention it was removed. You did the right thing to bring it to their attention, but that should be the end of your involvement in the matter. I know you were "shocked to the core" by the bumming, but it really isn't going to do you any lasting damage. You can't catch gayness by seeing it in Tesco you know.

Personally, if I'd been the shop assistant, I would have apologised "I'm so sorry, I don't know how that happened" - wouldn't have been too hard to say.

But as the customer, I wouldn't be so upset I'd be bothered to write for an apology. They took it away as soon as it was brought to their attention. However, you could write and suggest they put content controls on whatever internet wotsit they're using so it wouldn't be able to happen.

Its highly unlikely Tesco's put the item on the kindle and they acted on it it soon as you told them. Why you just dudnt press the off button asap is beyond me.

I think others are right and that you are over protesting just to get vouchers etc.

What are they supposed to apologise to you for? They obviously didn't put the porn on the machine, in practical terms they can't have members of staff standing over each and every machine in case something like this happens, and they reacted with commendable speed as soon as they realised what was happening. I don't see what more you expect them to do.

I am still bemused that so many people are quite happy for porn of any sort to be freely viewed in a supermarket. Happy that their (or other peoples) children could see this and would calmly carry on shopping ,pausing only to switch it off.
