to consider giving our new baby a completely different surname to DH and me?

I posted recently about the problems we're having choosing a name for our impending baby girl due to our tricky surname. It's here if anyone is remotely interested:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1617289-to-find-naming-our-baby-difficult

DH suggested that we consider giving her his mums maiden name instead. Its a lovely name with no real teasing potential and goes with every first name we can think of.

What do you think? Is it just a bit too out there? Has anyone done this? I'm considering it as it means I could give our bundle of joy the first name I want to give her but at the same time still feel it may just be a bit too wacky and extreme. ... Or should we just choose a name that we like but isn't our one of our favourites just so that it goes with our surname. Please give me your thoughts!

Why don't you both change your surname to that too? Would probably make things a lot easier, DD might still get picked on for her name if it's completely different from her parents.

SpectresandSpooks · 25/11/2012 15:12

I don't see an issue with it. How about you all change your surname to stop her wondering if she was adopted?! Wink

englishpigdog · 25/11/2012 15:40

yes because adopted children all have different surnames to their parents and you wouldn't want anyone to think they were adopted as that would be just horrible Hmm

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 25/11/2012 15:41

Oh FGS English. I am sure she didn't mean it like that.

DottyDot · 25/11/2012 15:44

Our ds's have a completely different surname to me, dp and their father - go figure...! Their surname is a combination of mine and dp's. they're 11 and 8 now and it's never been a problem. Neither dp or I have changed our surnames. They've never been teased about it (or about having two Mums!).

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 15:45

Were you and DH teased at school? Bullied? Because it seems an extreme thing to do, call your DD a different name to everyone just to avoid teasing. I have a cousin about to give birth. Their last name is a comedy vegetable. They are choosing names carefully but are focusing on giving their DD the skills to deal with teasing rather than try to avoid it.

Comedy Vegetable Mrs TP?

I can't think of any comedy veg that aren't amusing because of their shape.....

DontmindifIdo · 25/11/2012 15:50

You should have a family name, it will just make things easier. I suggest you all change your name or just accept that it's not a great surname, but it's your family name. Having a different name will just cause a lot of questions.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 15:51

I am trying to be stealth, don't out me Grin If I tell you it will be bloody obvious who I'm talking about.

OneWellAndTrulyCrackeredMummy · 25/11/2012 15:53

PM me Mrs TP pleeeaaaasssse

I NEED to know the comedy vegetable.

OP is the surname really that bad?! My maiden name was no fucking picnic but I dealt with it.

ChaoticismyLife · 25/11/2012 15:58

I think I may know the comedy veg but am probably way out.

OP my name is one where I got a lot of teasing about it when at school, so much so that I hated it when growing up. Now, however, I doubt very much that I would ever change it even if I got married because it's my name and has been for 41 years.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 16:00

OK, if I get outed you are all going down with me... It is not a vegetable, I was trying to be subtle. It is a fruit commonly used to describe female breasts. You know, big and round. It doesn't help that the DW has a name that alliterates with it.

ChaoticismyLife · 25/11/2012 16:01

Oops, posted too soon. What I meant to add was that it may be better to teach your DD how to deal with any teasing, which may not actually happen than to give her a different name to you and DH.

The other option is to change all your names which could be a hassle.

ChaoticismyLife · 25/11/2012 16:02

In that case I wasn't only out of the ballpark I was completely the other side of the world Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 16:05

What is your comedy vegetable? Grin

OneWellAndTrulyCrackeredMummy · 25/11/2012 16:05

Aaaaaaahhh, that's not too bad. Thanks Mrs TP :)

ChaoticismyLife · 25/11/2012 16:08

I was thinking carrot as in Jasper Carrott Grin

I'm not usually much good at cryptic clues and thought I may have got one right for once but obviously I made the wrong connection.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 16:09

I do know some Onions as well though.

Softlysoftly · 25/11/2012 16:12

Shit now I need to know the first alliteration!

Baps

Bitty

Bazungas

Softlysoftly · 25/11/2012 16:13

Oh sorry OP, I think if you want to fine but it's a bit extreme, unless your surname is Mr and Mrs Fuckwittery or something extreme she will live with it!

OneWellAndTrulyCrackeredMummy · 25/11/2012 16:14

I don't know any veg :(

OP is the problem that the surname is tricky by itself or just that it doesn't go with the first name you want?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/11/2012 16:15

What's your comedy fruit. Mine has an M.

Rosa · 25/11/2012 16:15

If you travel abroad you might need proof of parentage with different surnames. My dds carry dh name and I still hve mine. Have been asked at Uk/ USA borders to show birth certificates.

thebody · 25/11/2012 16:17

Overthinking this I think op.

kids get teased for anything and everything. Unless its itchy bottom or worse then she will learn to deal with it.
