It's to celebrate when the three kings brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. That's traditionally when countries like Italy exchange gifts, rather than Christmas.

Ah thankyou apostropheuse, do you and your DC not open presents on Xmas day then but on Epiphany? Or have I got it all wrong? Oh just bash me over the head with a shovel will you!!

oh my goodness no...we open ours on Christmas morning. Early. Very early.

I live in the UK - I was just explaining what it means! It's a Christian feast. It's also where the twelve days of Christmas comes from. (6th January being the twelfth day)

I believe in some places they exchange gifts both at Christmas and the Epiphany.

DD and I put ours up today, and decorated. I've never done it this early, but I'm waiting for the court date to finalize my divorce and frankly, I really need the cheering up. I love Christmas so much, and I don't get sick of it in one month.

The whole "chav" cry that comes up periodically on MN is just pathetic. It makes you sound so very judgmental, fake and shallow.

I don't decorate or put a tree up until around 15th December. I won't buy anything connected with Christmas until December and tend to remove decorations gradually between 2 and 5 January so it doesn't suddenly look cold and miserable. For me, keeping it to that length keeps it special.

But if it will cheer you up, YANBU. Unless you want to cover your house in fucking lights top to bottom which personally makes me want to kill people.

I think xmas tree should go up at the start of December

If it's an artificial tree and won't be shedding all its needles by the middle of December, then why not? If you enjoy seeing the tree up and it cheers you up then go for it!
It's such an effort putting the thing up, one might as well get good mileage out of it.
I've changed my tune over the years. When DCs were little we always used to wait till Christmas Eve and put the tree upthen after they'd gone to bed, so it would look lovely and Christmassy when they came down in the morning.

Do whatever makes you happy and to hell with what people think.

Ours goes up the 2nd weekend in December.

I usually put ours up on the 1st week in December - I love Christmas! However this year I was given a due date of Dec 25th for dc 5 and knew that it'd be at least a couple of weeks earlier than that due to complications.

My consultant has just moved c section date to this coming Friday 30th ( nearly a month early) so I will be out of action for a few weeks, it has to be done this weekend, I don't care if it's a bit early - its literally my favourite time of the year and will be even more special this year with a 3 week old lo to cuddle :)

Jingle bells is a winter song though, no references to Christmas!

I think we're going to do ours on Wednesday - we're off to see family abroad for Christmas in a couple of weeks so if we don't do it soon I'll have no time to appreciate it. Go for it!

Is that the law then?

Report
whathaveiforgottentoday · 25/11/2012 23:24

Law in this house and I think all houses is that Christmas decorations can go up in December and not before. Had this very conversation with dd's today and I said its the law of Mummy.

I'm tempted to write 'WHY' on postcards and post them through letter boxes of houses who already have their decorations up. I wouldn't of course but very tempted.

Amused that putting your decorations up too early is 'chavvy'.. I'm amazed at how much constitutes towards being chavvy according to some on here.

I put mine up either 30 nov or 1st dec but I would happily have them up all year round if I was allowed. They make me so happy! The room is bare without.

Morloth · 26/11/2012 08:28

Ours goes up first weekend in December and down first weekend in January.

If you want yours up now, why not? It is your tree and your Christmas, it doesn't matter, make yourself happy.
