Completely can't believe what I saw earlier whilst sat in the bus stop, bloke came across with his 2 kids (primary school age) and says "wait here I will be back in 2 mins," then walks up to the off licence and came back with a can of lager, which he proceeded to drink on the bus. Whilst his two children ran unchecked around the bus. It really upset me to see how some people treat their children. If you can't wait till your kids are in bed before you crack out the alcohol, you have got a serious problem, if you do it on the bus out in public with your kids with you, you are sick in the head as far as I am concerned. Rant over.

This is basically a copy of what I just put on my FB status, I was so shocked (but I do live in an area where you see people passing your window swigging on a bottle of stella artois at 8 in the morning, but to do it when you are in charge of young children beggars belief!

I want to add that I am currently 4 months pregnant and a tad emotional and hormonal at the best of times, so I might be overreacting. I'm just so thankful for my DP as he would never ever consider doing that!

It is a weird cut off. I wonder why they chose 7.

BegoniaBampot · 22/11/2012 23:52

Only on Mn would you get everyone running to defend a parent doing this, I'd imagine most folk in RL would at the least raise an eyebrow - it does sound a bit scummy. In Mn world someone could post 'just saw and old gran get a kicking by a young guy with a can of beer in his hand' and you'd get a chorus of 'ooh, hark at you and your judgey pants'.

saying that, I've caught a bus up to Wimbledon and was quaffing G+T at 10 in the morning (without kids), so yes there are double standards at play here.

missymoomoomee · 22/11/2012 23:54

Just googled the licensing act scottish and its really quite vague about how drunk you need to be to get charged, but you can be jailed for up to a month. (not you oobviously, people in general Grin )

InNeedOfBrandy · 22/11/2012 23:55

No of course i'm not huffy. Grin I do find it funny that your so het up and judgy about this.

Its also illegal to be drunk in a public place, and I wonder how many people get trollied while their dc sleep. Just because they are asleep does not mean you are not still in charge.

A man having one can in the day outside is different to a mum having a glass in the park on a picnic blanket how?

scottishmummy · 22/11/2012 23:55

yes only on mn would drunk on bus with weans get vociferously defended
im expecting some hand wringing about walk mile in their moccasins
i see drunk parent on bus with weans i judge

scottishmummy · 22/11/2012 23:58

brandy im pointing out your glaring inconsistencies in posts.
you are unable to tolerate anything other than woohoo, tipsy pissed . good for you
if you were so cool about being judged for being pissed on bus youd not be arguing

InNeedOfBrandy · 23/11/2012 00:03

Ok SM Smile if you see inconsistencies then fine.

scottishmummy · 23/11/2012 00:09

of course its fine
its you who is backtracking from your yea judge away I don't care
i judge you or any parent pissed on a bus with your kids

InNeedOfBrandy · 23/11/2012 00:11

Ok SM . whatever you say. Hope you never ever touch a drop of alcohol while your dc are about.

CordeliaChase · 23/11/2012 00:12

YANBU

I would've been pretty upset at that too. I won't even have 1 drink until my DS is asleep unless my DH is home then I might have one after dinner. I'm a bit prudish like that. Blush

nancy75 · 23/11/2012 00:13

I didn't think you were allowed to drink alcohol on buses?
Op yanbu I would judge too. For those of you saying this is just a snapshot of the mans life, if this is the kind of snapshot he is happy to play out in public, just imagine the moments you don't see.

Moominsarescary · 23/11/2012 00:14

Thought you were talking about my exh for a minute there

scottishmummy · 23/11/2012 00:14

i have never been pissed or tipsy on bus with my weans
nor would i
and aye i judge the parent in the op and id judge tipsy/pissed mammy with weans

Fairyegg · 23/11/2012 00:19

And if it was a mum drinking a glass of wine with her kids present in a posh pub / cafe? ..... Yabu

WorraLiberty · 23/11/2012 00:22

The thing is (for me anyway) the 'snapshot' involved a man drinking a can of beer on a bus in front of his kids...and leaving his 'Primary aged' (whatever that means) kids at the bus stop to pop into the shop.

The OP got 4 YABU's in a row...mainly for posting on FB about it and then all of a sudden she says she should have added 'He didn't exactly sound sober'.

Now if the Primary aged kids happen to be very young and not at the older end of Primary I'd say YANBU for being angry he left them alone at the bus stop.

If the man was clearly drunk rather than not exactly sounding sober (how does she know what he normally sounds like?) I'd say YANBU.

But the she hasn't actually said any of that and the fact she posted it on FB along with the golden nugget...If you can't wait till your kids are in bed before you crack out the alcohol, you have got a serious problem, if you do it on the bus out in public with your kids with you, you are sick in the head as far as I am concerned

Makes her very unreasonable indeed in my eyes.

scottishmummy · 23/11/2012 00:23

the mn dash to prove liberal credentials on mn and inverted snobbery so funny
if india and tom mum was half cut in posh gaff with weans yes id judge
but knock yourself out, walk a mile in his moccasins.judge ye not

redandwhitesprinkles · 23/11/2012 00:23

In London it is illegal to carry open containers of alcohol on public transport.

However, if the kids were safe while he was in the shop then yabu.

I am more concerned about them being alone than with a parent who had drink a can.

I often drink in front of my children but never get drunk, one or glasses of wine makes me smile not drunk, but I generally don't judge others who drink more so long as their children are safe.

DowagersHump · 23/11/2012 00:29

Weirdly, the person who seems most pissed on this thread is you, scottishmummy Hmm

scottishmummy · 23/11/2012 00:32

and you can tell that with your scratch and sniff laptop and humphy faceHmm
what else can you tell me
can you smell the shepherds pie for tea, where are my lost keys, youre really good

Bonsoir · 25/11/2012 10:55

We have picnics in the park in the summer with other families where there is champagne and wine galore and our children run around... Blush

SundaeGirl · 25/11/2012 10:59

YABU. mainly because of the snobbery re bus stops and lager. If it was park picnic rug and chilled rose you might not have noticed.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 25/11/2012 11:23

YANBU to be a bit Hmm at this man swigging lager on the school run while his kids have to basically fend for themselves. It'll be a cold day in hell before

YABVU to think that all parents who drink infront of their kids have a problem. I drink and occasionally get tipsy (NOT pissed) in front of them. I am still capable of looking after them. Ofcourse at the other end of the scale are people like my mother who were rampant alcoholics and put their kids at risk while they drank/drink. But you can not assume that everyone who drinks in front of their kids has a problem with drink.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 25/11/2012 11:25

before anyone convinces me that is normal! that first sentence should finish! Got distacted by DS Blush

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 25/11/2012 11:30

I'd be more judgey about him not controlling his children on a bus than I would be about him having a beer. It's really not that uncommon in the area I live in and whilst it may be a bit Hmm I don't think it automatically makes someone a bad parent.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 25/11/2012 11:32

And ScottishMummy I judge anyone who think it's acceptable to be so snarky and rude to other people, what a delightful person you are.
