to want to be ill/tired/whatever without it turning into a competition?

I've got a horrible tickly cough at the moment, so haven't been sleeping all that brilliantly.

I'm knackered and feel a bit shitty.

DH also has a cough. But it's not just any cough. It's an 'I think I'm coming down with flu' cough.

He's also knackered, but is obviously way more knackered than I am.

I just want to wallow in my feeling-shitty-knackeredness on my own. For once. Without bloody competition!

I know what you mean, my DH tends to mirror me in the ill stakes, why I have no idea. Just sod off to bed to sleep!

I have it with my mum. Pisses me off. Called her today to say I had to be taken to a&e and could she come up and collect ds (21 months) while I was x rayed.

She said yes, came up and while I am sat in pain (disloxtaed ribs) starts telling me I am lucky because she had to go to the doctors this week as she had flu or sone such shit.

I just thanked her for coming for ds and tried to smile.

NoraGainesborough · 21/11/2012 19:37

dislocated ribs.

ClippedPhoenix · 21/11/2012 19:45

My mum does this too, I tell her I have a splitting headache and she tells me about the time she had to have a brain scan!

My DP does this too, I've been really ill with a barking cough to the point I had no voice for a month and ended up with torn rib muscles. He apparently has had worse. I call it competitive illness syndrome Grin Luckily I can also tell him to bugger right off back to his own house and let me get on with it.

I call it competitive illness syndrome

Perfect name for it!

Drives me nuts.

I'm not properly ill, just a bit tired and feel a bit shitty and I want to feel sorry for myself in peace

ha ha agree with all posters what is it with competitive illness

though i have seen this on MN many times especially poverty, income, anything actually Grin

ClippedPhoenix · 21/11/2012 20:56

Just goes to show that competiveness has no restraints Grin

OP, go cuddle up and be poorly to whatever degree simply because you feel like it.

Lia87 · 21/11/2012 21:56

ha ha what you're forgetting is he has manflu on top of your illness, the poor thing ;)

ClippedPhoenix · 21/11/2012 21:58

Nah, he's just scared that he won't get the level of looking after that he usually always gets Grin

cheeseandmushroomghostie · 21/11/2012 21:58

I have this with DH at the moment. I an pregnant with dc2 though so I always win the competition even though he tries to make out he is more tired and exhausted than me

3monkeys3 · 21/11/2012 22:00

DH and I have actually begun to add a disclaimer, along the lines of 'I know you're tired too because of xyz', before complaining of our own tiredness!

YANBU dh does this when I'm feeling ill Hmm

God help him if I ever need a hysterectomy Grin

Jossysgiants · 21/11/2012 22:17

I can never be unwell by myself. If I have a cough, Dh has consumption. About half an hour after I gave birth, while I was lying in excruciating pain he sat by my bedside showing me his mouth ulcer and telling me how painful it was. Yanbu.
