Nipped round to one of my neighbours yesterday to return something I had borrowed, ended up having a bit of a chat and was gone for about 15/20 minutes.

Came back to a message on my house answer phone and a message on my mobile voicemail from school asking me to call them back urgently.

Rang back in a panic, they wanted to give me a message about after school clubs last night.

Drop the kids off this morning and get a massive lecture about taking my mobile phone with me everywhere I go.

I take my phone if I'm going out-out, but not to nip round the neighbours/pop to the shop/run to the post box, etc.

I'm not always contactable straight away anyway even when I do have it with me, I can't be the only one who doesn't glue their mobile phone to them every time they leave the house

YANBU. What if you performing heart surgery? Would they have called you out of the operation to ask you about after school club?

YANBU. Situations where I won't answer my phone:

• meeting at work
• medical appointment
• swimming :o
• driving
• changing DD's nappy
• cinema

...

I don't take my mobile everywhere, I hate carrying a bag when I'm shopping so normally just take my purse and shopping bags. I didn't even think about the school aspect but what did they do when mobiles were not prevalent. If anything happened to dc/they were ill they have 3 other numbers to ring apart from me.

YABU. You're obviously a horrendous excuse for a human being!

What did we do before mobiles?

I draw a line at taking it to the toilet with me, but my phone is with me most of the time. Those missed calls could have been an emergency call from school. I think it's a bit weird they gave you a lecture about it though.

Mine is in my bag, normally on silent. I don't always take my bag with me when I go out.
My mobile is so that I can contact people, not the other way round.

Argh Fakebook you just reminded me of a student job I had as a PA for an older man. He used to call me from the toilet. I could hear everything

YANBU...sick and tired of people virtually melting with grief when they've forgotten/mislaid their life support machine mobile. They can have my first FFS.

Surely they have a contact for another person they could have rung if it was an emergency ?

I take mine most places because I'm always waiting for a message from school because of DDs SN.
However, my lovely sister misdee is terrible for not carrying her phone because she spent so many years HAVING to carry it because of dh transplant stuff, that she is a now a rebel!

I love having a smartphone. It means I can MN from anywhere. Even the toilet.

My mobile lives in my back pocket.
I now take it out my back pocket when I go to the loo!!

My mobile is currently in DS's school bag, dead as a dodo, and it has been there for at least 2 weeks. Before that it was somewhere under my bed, before that it was always dead at the bottom of my handbag

I bloody hate mobiles and feel a lot better now I don't really have one. If anybody wants me, they can call the house phone. If it's a school emergency, they have 4 other numbers to call as well

If I'm going out any distance or for any length of time it's either in my bag or my coat pocket, but yesterday I just ran 2 doors up bag and coat less or I shove my debit card in my pocket and run down to the shop.

If it had have been an emergency, they could have called DH - he works from home in the shed in the garden, he wouldn't have heard the house phone but they have his mobile and we live minutes away from school

YANBU. I take mine to work with me or if I'm out for the day, but I don't bother if I'm just walking the dog or popping to the shop or post-office or something. Also it's often on silent if I'm in a meeting etc (and I usually forget to turn it back on afterwards!)

It sounds like a weird reaction from the school. Couldn't they have just left you a voicemail with the message about the after-school club? If there was a real emergency, surely they could have contacted your child's other parent or emergency contact?

I think sometimes teachers/school staff get in the habit of treating everyone like naughty children, they don't realise how rude and inappropriate they're being.

Yes, they do send out text messages, but for some reason decided to ring me.

I could understand the angst over it if it was hours and hours, but it was 20 minutes max, they have other emergency contact numbers - 1 of which being the neighbour's house I was in

This reminds me of the thread where they told the OP she wasn't allowed to be half hour away from the school.

YANBU. If it was a genuine emergency, I'm sure the school would be capable of calling 999 themselves - in fact it would be irresponsible of them to call you first! Anything urgent the school should be capable of handling themselves for a short period of time - isn't that the whole point of being in loco parentis?

YANBU - before mobiles, you just had to deal with the fact that if someone wasn't at home you couldn't get hold of them. I get with people who get really worked up because they rang my mobile and I didn't answer. I can go for a couple of days without using it sometimes and only realise it's out of charge when I look for it! Our school panics a bit when they can't get hold of you - DS2 headbutted the playground the other week (big bruise but otherwise fine) and I was in the shower when they rang (had been decorating) - I could hear the phone but figured it could wait til I was out obviously - I had a message on house phone, a message on mobile, another missed call from school on house phone and managed to get to my mobile when it rang the second time to ask me to pick him up (all in the space of about 3 minutes!!)

Yes, they could have just left a message, and asked me to call back if they wanted me to confirm I'd got it.

My phone is in my handbag, but I switch it off before I go to bed and sometimes don't switch it back on again until I'm about to leave the house. I never carry it around the house with me and certainly not when I go to the loo! We have a house phone too, anyway.

Slightlylsuperior, yuck! Why the hell would anyone do something like that?

It distresses DS's school no end that my phone is off between office hours as it's actually illegal to take them into my workplace (have to put them in a locker). If there's ever a problem, you can guarantee endless voicemails/texts when I get out of work (luckily DS has never been taken ill at school), no matter how many times i tell them TO RING ME ON MY OFFICE LANDLINE AS MY MOBILE IS ALWAYS OFF DURING THE DAY. They just can't seem to cope with landline numbers any more, even though at one time, all of parents would only have been contactable on a landline.
