Disgusting person

These are not off the cuff remarks, said in an interview.

It is a quote from her book, which she wrote and sent to her publisher for editing and proof-reading. I'd assume they checked that section, and had their legal department have a look too.

They have then summarised it in the DAILY MAIL, ffs, which has sent the readers of that paper straight to Amazon to buy the book from that sensible Clarissa dame, who says it like it it and isn't shut up by that PC bollocks.

Her publisher must be delighted by the free publicity.

FromEsme · 18/11/2012 11:48

But does he have a wonky hair-do MrsDeVere ? Does he ever wear ironic glasses?

I always wear ironic classes, shoot me

MmeLindor · 18/11/2012 11:49

Plants
Being British means for me:

  • drinking lots of tea, particularly when upset
  • apologising a lot (even if someone stands on my toes)
  • owning a house
  • carpets in bathrooms and pubs (becoming less popular but still typically British)
  • talking about the weather a LOT
  • not having mixer taps
  • complaining then saying, 'mustn't grumble!'

(most of these are things that German DH has noticed about the British)

MmeLindor have you seen that "how to be German in 20 steps" that's doing the rounds on FB? I laughed like a drain. It's all about taking 3 hours to eat breakfast, not drinking tap water and wearing hiking boots if you're going anywhere that requires you to step off a pavement.

Frighteningly accurate.

MmeLindor · 18/11/2012 11:57

FromEsme
no, I haven't but it sounds great. Will go and look.

MrsDV
Loved your posts on this thread, btw.

FromEsme · 18/11/2012 11:59

Here it is

It really raised a chuckle for me and my fellow ex-German-dwelling friends. Not from the Germans, of course, they just raised an eyebrow and said "ja, aber das ist ganz normal, ODER?"

MotherfuckingMorrisMan · 18/11/2012 12:08

Don't talk to me about children cutting their long beautiful hair.

Dd cut off her down-to-the-bum blonde hair (the bloody years I invested nit combing that lot and plaiting it every day) and dyed it black when she was 14. Thankfully it grew and the black hair disappeared thankfully (I must remember it's not all about me)

NothingIsAsBadAsItSeems · 18/11/2012 14:47

Our supermarket has a special aisle with eastern European products for the seasonal workers- how does that make you feel?
a. Oh, that's a good idea!
b. Incandescent with rage.

A - It's a great idea, my local supermarkets do that too

But I really dislike Leicester as it's the only place where I've been:

  • Mugged
  • Offered drugs then mugged when I refused to buy any
  • Mugged and threatened with a knife

The three blokes who did the above all had very thick African accents.... So I try to avoid Leicester if I'm on my own as I'd rather not add any more incidents to the list. It doesn't make me racist at least I don't think it does but I do understand feeling uncomfortable in certain areas.

AmberLeaf · 18/11/2012 17:16

Why mention the African accents then?

What the fuck is an "African accent"?

And if they had strong Yorkshire accents would you still be avoiding Leicester? What a bizarre post that was!

I am astounded by so many witnesses to her time in Leicester because we all know for a fact that she could only feel the way she did because she's racist.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/11/2012 18:26

Erm, no. Don't think anyone claimed to be a witness.

What she said is racist. I'm sure she isn't lying much about her telepathic ability to tell what 'they' think (though mindreading is quite a rare skill), but she is expressing her views in a racist way.

That doesn't require us to have witnessed anything except what she's quoted as saying, does it?

seeker · 18/11/2012 18:56

Nope. She could only have said what she said if she was racist.

FromEsme · 18/11/2012 19:36

If someone ignores me on the street, I tend to think it's because they don't want to talk to me, rather than because they are thinking what a hideous western slag I am.

I still haven't found out those areas of London that I'm not allowed to go to. I hope it's not any of the good bits.

NothingIsAsBadAsItSeems · 19/11/2012 10:34

I mentioned the African accents simply because the police asked about the accent along with a description when I reported the incidents. They then said that they'd had a lot of similar incidents involving a person/s who looked/sounded similar to the ones who mugged me. If they'd had a thick Yorkshire accent I would have told the police that that was the accent they had along with the description.

I'm pretty sure I have 'please mug me' written on my forehead when I go to Leicester - Which is why I've stopped going on my own

NothingIsAsBadAsItSeems · 19/11/2012 10:36

If it helps it was quite close to the university when I was offered drugs

larrygrylls · 19/11/2012 10:46

"What she said is racist."

How is it racist to be frightened by people who refuse to speak to a lost woman on her own? And expecting people from different cultures to integrate into their adopted society at least up to a point (speaking the language, having some ideas of the customs etc) is also not racist. I once found myself (of Jewish descent) in Mea Sharim (think that is the spelling) in Jerusalem. I felt distinctly uncomfortable among the Jews there who dressed in 18th Century garb and traditionally throw stones at anyone "disrespecting" their customs (e.g wearing a skirt shorter than knee length).

There are areas dominated by extremists and that seem to exist outside the normal customs and laws of this country. I, too, think that is a very bad thing and is a fault of the concept of "multiculturalism". There has to be a compromise between respecting outsiders' beliefs and customs but also respecting the beliefs and customs of the host country.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 10:54

It's not racist to be frightened.

She didn't say 'I am frightened'.

She didn't say she expected people to integrate.

She's quoted in the link in the OP. What she said is racist, and not at all the same as what you're asking about.

larrygrylls · 19/11/2012 11:00

'It scared me and I am not scared easy,' she said.

In the book, also quoted in the article, it starts with "I had one of my most frightening adventures there".

Sounds to me like she was frightened.

"'If multiculturalism works, which I have always been rather dubious of, surely it must be multicultural and not monocultural."

Sounds like she also does expect people to integrate up to a point.

Which particular part do you find racist?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/11/2012 11:07

Erm, not those bits, obviously. Hmm

The racist bit is her claiming that people refused to talk to her because 'they' didn't talk to women they don't know. She is either making a racist assumption here, or simply lying - if she didn't talk to these people, she has no idea why they didn't reply.

I wouldn't reply to someone calling to me on the street from a car, either.

She then refused to apologize but said she didn't think people would be offended because they wouldn't be able to read English.

Racist comments.

This has all been explained on the thread and it is slightly arrogant to rock up late in the day and ask for a rematch.
