to deny my 13 yo DD "this opportunity"

My DC's take part in trampolining at a local club which just happens to be our local school. The school now want our children to take part in a competition that they are organising but they want to bring in a different coach and this worries me. I have every faith in our coaches and they have offered to coach the children for the competition but the school have said that we need to allow them to train with this other coach that none of us know/ know anything about. I know that many kids will play rugby etc. for the school and local clubs and have several different coaches and the school are saying that we are "denying the kids this opportunity" but I (and other parents) am really worried about insurance cover and the many serious accidents that can occur on a trampoline when things are not correctly. AIBU? I don't want to stop her taking part but I would like her own coaches to be involved.

What makes you think this other coach is not properly trained and insured?

Sorry - what exactly are your reservations here? Surely the coaches, whoever they are, will be covered by the same insurance? Accidents can and do happen in every sport - why would the chances increase because of a change of coach? I think YAB completely U. Who's stirring up all the other parents? You?

Do you think that the coach the school want is some kind of child-hating ogre who won't be happy unless at least three children fall off he trampoline and break their legs? Confused

From the information you provide, YABU.

Is there something about this coach that is a cause for concern, other than that you don't yet know him/her? (the coaches you have now were once unknown quantities). I infer that this isn't the case as you say you know nothing about him/her - if you had eg known that a child had been badly injured under their supervision you'd BU but that does not appear to be the case.

Of course they are going to be properly insured and trained! what is it your not saying op? why are you really concerned about this?

I suppose I am worried that the whole thing seems rushed and disorganised. the competition is supposed to be in January, the kids practise routines for months normally before they would be ready for a competition. We haven't been given any information from the school at all except for 2 13 yo girls asking if they borrow the club trampolines after school to practise. I spoke to the school teacher "orgainising" it today and he said that if the girls couldn't use the trampolines then the whole thing is off, however the school haven't even approached the club to ask (except through the kids). I have no reason to believe that the coach isn't insured and highly qualified BUT neither do I have any evidence that he is, as we have been given absolutely no information.

Wait until it becomes more than just the teacher's pipe dream and then ask if the instructor is insured and qualified.

I'm not sure why you're worrying about it now if they haven't even got round to asking if the kids can use the trampolines.

I don't fully understand the situation but I think YABU, why not see how it goes before making your mind up, you seem to be looking for problems.

Worra because the coach is supposed to be arriving on Friday Confused as to why the school haven't asked about borrowing teh trampolines unless they intend to just go ahead and use them without the clubs permission as they are stored in the school, (at a cost of £12k a year I might add!)

Actually - it all sounds very disorganised and I would be concerned about how well they have checked this coach out (and if they have any idea of what/how to check them out properly) - FGS they haven't even made arrangements with the club re the trampolines!

Trampolining isn't like football, it can be dangerous. This coach doesn't know the children & the school wants them in a competition in a few weeks (with the Christmas break in the middle), I wouldn't be that happy with that, even if it seemed very organised.

I broke my back (fortunately not 'badly') on a trampoline, with a qualified insured coach supporting me (didn't even fall off) so fully appreciate that it's dangerous and would want to know a lot about the coach who was going to be involved; I don't think you are BU

My son does Judo at a club which happens to train in his school, and I've just given some thought to how I'd feel if we were in your shoes. I've come to the conclusion that YANBU, you need more information about this coach before you can make an informed decision and like you say it does seem a bit rushed, that's not a long time to adjust to a new coach and prepare for a competition in January.

I wouldn't be worried about a different coach per se (what you imply in your OP) but your second post gives much more information and it does sound chaotic and and disorganised.

YABU to object just because the school want the kids to work with a different coach for the competition.

However, YANBU to think that the school are being chaotic and disorganised, have not prepared sufficiently, nor made proper arrangements for the equipment, or appreciated that trampolining can be hazardous and THEREFORE to be concerned about your DD working with a different coach in that setup.

Maybe they need to do higher level moves from the competition than your current coaches are qualified to teach.Or maybe the regular coaches have not got much recent competition experience (things move on)
I think you will fing the new coaches are very likely better qualified rather than less qualified and they will undoubtedly be insured

I would want to know about insurance etc - you can ask, it's a perfectly normal question.
