AIBU?

In getting irritated with people who indirectly mock poor people?

I have an acquaintance who constantly comments on how much she hates Iceland frozen food and how cheap it is and how disgusting it must be. It seems to be a running joke with her and all her friends. Acquaintance is well off and I can't help thinking her jokes are not funny and actually some people might need to buy the cheap food Iceland offers. AIBU?

The problem is that some peopledon't seem to realise that you can cook food from scratch relatively cheaply even if you are on a budget. The frozen stuff that is available in any store is poor quality rubbish. It may be cheap but often the portion sizes are really small and don't have any nutritional value. Someone I knows gets the family size frozen lasagna and there is hardly any meat or veg in it. It's just all sauce and pasts

Worra - Most people are just a redundancy away from much cheaper food that they wouldn't necessarily buy if they had more money.

Me - I buy value ranges now because I don't have a choice now. Some of them are nice, some not that nice.

I get this snobbery from friends and family. A relative came to stay with us recently and was amazed and disparaging at all the value brands in the cupboard, however by the end of the week, he was practically converted.

Our "local" asda is in a village on the outskirts of our city. There is a university campus about a mile up the road, so there are loads of students and generally old people in there all the time.

I think you just need to pick your brands. To be honest, even when we had a lot more money, I used to buy Tesco value baby wipes and peanut butter. If it tastes nice, what is the problem?

(9p for a packet of Tesco Baby Wipes? I was only going to use them to wipe off bogies and food from DD's face! Sadly they are not 9p anymore but at the time I used to laugh at the other mummies spending nearly 3 quid on wipes)

And while I am at it...

I only started shopping at Asda a year ago, simply because it was the nearest supermarket. Prior to that it was Tesco and Waitrose.

I had no idea it has a 'reputation', and have only heard about this on Mumsnet!

wonders if fakebook lives near me! Does this particular ASDA have dreadful accoustics? i coudlnt shop there for years as you can hear EVERY single screaming child over the piped music, and there was a mental mooing cow thing - it literally frayed my nerves! I can shop there now, but i have to be in the right frame of mind. I now cannot abide tesco as it is too big and you have to look at loads of expensive shite before you get to the stuff you like. I have never stepped foot in waitrose, hate morrisons.

Cantspel - that always amuses me whenever there is a campaign against a new supermarket opening, all the locals say 'no one will ever use it', 'we don't need it' - yet inevtably they are always packed out Grin.

It was only a few years ago that everyone turned their noses up at Aldi and Lidl - now they are practically the new Waitrose Wink.

I think most people in life are just normal and go to the nearest supermarket to them.

I am fortunate that I live in a city with all the supermarkets within spitting distance (apart from Waitrose, but who cares). So I just go to the one nearest me, or one which is convenient on my way to somewhere a fucking lot more interesting! The only one I avoid is Morrisons because I irrationally get annoyed by the STUPID pretend market theme, we are not kids, we are adults, we know we are not in a farmer's market, don't dress the shop up like Play School.

I too love pag's post about the MIL fall out and the French jingle. Grin

oh I like the Morrisons market theme Blush The one at festival park in Stoke on Trent used to be an ABSOLUTE favourite of mine (we are going back over a decade ago though) but I used to look forward to going shopping Shock and I used to nearly wet myself with excitement

I love the Morrisons market theme, and more to the point that they sell so many things you can't buy in Asda, Tesco or indeed Waitrose

I saw them in Selfridges priced at £5.

£1.99 in Morrisons.

Exact same thing.

The fruit, veg and meat is amazing value in there for the quality I find. I like the bakery too but try to avoid it

Round here the treasure trove for unusual food is Asda, it also has a brilliant ethnic food section which is as cheap as anything. It's great. I don't really like a lot of Asda brand food, but they sell a wide range of all sorts and it is as cheap as anything.
