In getting irritated with people who indirectly mock poor people?

I have an acquaintance who constantly comments on how much she hates Iceland frozen food and how cheap it is and how disgusting it must be. It seems to be a running joke with her and all her friends. Acquaintance is well off and I can't help thinking her jokes are not funny and actually some people might need to buy the cheap food Iceland offers. AIBU?

I love shopi!

They used to have a song ' c'est le shop-shop-shopi'
I fell out with mil massively once when she got irritated about my I going along noisily. The last line is 'Moins cher' and you have to sing it really low..

IsabelleRinging · 14/11/2012 14:31

That horrible party food on the Iceland adverts looks horrid.

Being poor wouldn't make me buy it.

It is not exclusive to being poor either- my MIL buys it and thinks it's great and she's not poor.

Some people just haven't got taste.

ihavenofuckingclue · 14/11/2012 14:50

oh ASDA, that's a cheap shop isn't it" I felt so humiliated!

Really?

Whatnowffs · 14/11/2012 14:56

LMAO at ASDA humiliation :) Tis full of chavs and students, but i shop there every week (i have enough chav and student credentials to get past the friendly scary greeter who stands in the doorway trying to flog me four muffins for a quid). It is regularly £30-£40 cheaper than tesco on my weekly shop to feed three. So Tesco shop tends to be between £80 and £100 with me being careful. ASDA never more than £60, even with alcohol and cleaning products which always push the price up. The only thing i find irritating about ASDA is having to search out the own brand stuff.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 14/11/2012 15:04

YANBU but the word you're looking for is 'snob'.... very common even on MN.....

drivinmecrazy · 14/11/2012 15:11

My Mum is, ir used to be, the biggest shopping snob ever to walk the earth. Now she lives in Spain, her and friends have afternoons out to visit Iceland, likewise Lidl. It transpires there are many things she can only buy there, such as CoffeeMate (she got into it when it was nigh on impossible to but fresh milk in her rural area) Also Branston Pickle. I could NEVER envisage her shopping at these places in the UK but her freezer is full of their stuff.
Just goes to show it's not only the poor who shop at these places (she's certainly not in the 'poor' category by any stretch of the imagination).
I, on the other hand, loathe the place and can never understand how their stuff is so cheap. Wish I could get over my 'snobbish' attitude to such places cos am sure we would be significantly better off!!

She sounds like a bitch.

I love getting stuff cheap. I got a compliment on some earrings the other night. I was really happy. They cost me $1.50 when I was in the US last year.

Do these people realise that the brandes companies make the branded own brands as well?

I would have told her that as well. I can't believe how rude some people are.

I have never come across supermarket snobbery.

dontcallmehon · 14/11/2012 15:53

I shop at ASDA every week. Have never noticed any difference - other than the price.

I probably would find it a bit annoying and snobbish if someone kept going on about it.

How does hating Iceland even come up in conversation on a regular basis though? Confused

cantspel · 14/11/2012 15:58

A new asda opened last week just up the road from me.

For years the local residents have fought against it but it has been packed out everyday since opening.

I went late on saturday and it was still heaving with shoppers. I managed to get 5 packs of chicken breasts , a pack of 2 beef wellington and a pack of salmon fish cakes all reduced to 20p each.

I am neither a chav or a student but i dont care if the terminally stuck up think that asda is beneath them as it leaves more bargains for me.

This has with out a doubt got to be the best post ever

Whatnowffs · 14/11/2012 16:33

Errr, i was joking, i am probably he chavviest person i know, and i am an eternal student!

Saying that, in the past month i have twice seen people shopping in asda in their PJs! I love asda

joanbyers · 14/11/2012 16:46

Some of the Iceland snobbery is horrendous, just look at this for example:

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 14/11/2012 16:51

Do people really give a bendy fuck where other people shop?

oh dear joan - i did try not to laugh, but you know that embarrasin laugh you do when its totally inappropriate to do so, i just did that - right out loud!! There were a couple of aspects of it that were totally out of order though, so am berating myself for laughing!

not sure about racist, i know the bit you mean unsual and that did cause a sharp intake of breath and a Hmm face but i think its more like it is saying "if you shop at iceland you are racist" which i am not sure is any better tbh.
