I have an acquaintance who constantly comments on how much she hates Iceland frozen food and how cheap it is and how disgusting it must be. It seems to be a running joke with her and all her friends. Acquaintance is well off and I can't help thinking her jokes are not funny and actually some people might need to buy the cheap food Iceland offers. AIBU?

Their party food is shit though. By the time it's thawed out it's just tasteless mush....

Moominsarescary · 14/11/2012 11:23

I don't care, we have one 5 mins up the road from us and they sell boxes of wispa ice cream bars for a £1 (pg craving)

I buy their frozen veg and the occasional frozen pizza. They usually have good deals on their cheese too.

CalmingMiranda · 14/11/2012 11:27

She is stupid and a snob.

Some Iceland stuff is excellent. I used to buy a particular ice cream that was much better (in a 'sophisticated' sense) than the M&S equivalent. meanwhile, look how often Waitrose and M&S products come out last or with few stars in those blind tastings in the Observer food supplement.

Iceland also treat their staff very well.

Shop there or not as you choose, but how insecure and desparate must you be to want to be snide about which checkout people queue at?

CalmingMiranda · 14/11/2012 11:28

Weren't Iceland the first food chain shop to go gm free on own brand food and used to only stock organic baby food jars?

Yes.

dontcallmehon · 14/11/2012 11:42

I wouldn't say I was 'going into battle' OldMumsy. Just having a rant on Mumsnet. That's what Mumsnet is for Wink.

You and your friend are an excellent match.

OldMumsy · 14/11/2012 12:19

But still, I hate that some people can't make ethical and healthy choices and might feel mocked for it.

Do you not think this is mocking them? They shop at Iceland so must be uneducated?

PMSL, recursive mocking!!!

OldMumsy · 14/11/2012 12:20

dontcallmehon I was mocking the mocking of the mocking.

OldMumsy · 14/11/2012 12:20

I think.

dontcallmehon · 14/11/2012 12:23

Ok SoleSource - not sure what you mean. I'm not trying to be offensive but nevermind.

I am really confused now mumsy. Grin

ihavenofuckingclue · 14/11/2012 12:57

so do you feel they are being mocked because they are poor or uneducated?

laughtergoodmedicine · 14/11/2012 13:01

Some people do feel uncomfortable with poor people. And will mock them.
I think the poor need a better deal. And the rich have got too good a deal.

shesariver · 14/11/2012 13:08

mothermorrisman I love foreign supermarkets to, a highlight is going into all thedifferent French ones to bring different reusuable bags home, yep well sad!
I wonder what the hierarchy there is, because yes there is definately one in this country. Thought Casino would be up near the top, Intermarche not so much Grin

boomting · 14/11/2012 13:11

On the flip side, I've been on the receiving end of jokes about being "posh".

The irony is that I know for a fact the people making those jokes have families who are in a much better position than mine.

Ragwort · 14/11/2012 13:17

There is huge snobbish at wherever we shop, and even on Mumsnet there are lots of smug PA comments about all sorts of brands.

Your friend just doesn't sound very nice at all.

Personally I like to go to both Waitrose and Iceland, both have good products on sale Grin and are near to each other locally !

Fakebook · 14/11/2012 13:21

What the hell is wrong with Iceland? I don't buy frozen meaty food from there but their frozen vegetables and chips are great. I also buy kingsmill bread from there because its cheapest. Hmm...they have excellent deals on fruit, and I once bought a 48 pack of weetabix for £1.50. That's flipping cheap. Infact a lot of branded goods are much cheaper in iceland than some other shops.

EuroShagmore · 14/11/2012 13:22

I have been known to make disparaging comments about cr@p processed food. It's not snobbery against poor people. It's dislike of nasty processed cr@p, wherever it is bought. I have been extremely hard up and managed to feed myself with cheap, fresh, ingredients.

Fakebook · 14/11/2012 13:28

Oh I just remembered how snobby people can get about supermarkets.

We used to a have a Friday cake day at my last job and the rich big shots who worked in sales used to bring in about 2 packets of biscuits and a cake from waitrose for £10 for 20 people in the company. When someone used to go to tesco or sainsburys, we'd have cakes and biscuits that lasted until the following Friday

The company accountant used to pay us back the £10. Once I went to asda instead of waitrose or m&s and she actually said to me "oh ASDA, that's a cheap shop isn't it"

I felt so humiliated!

Furoshika · 14/11/2012 13:31

Food is always up for mockery. It's a very emotional subject.
But objectively, Iceland prawn rings do look kind of crap (have never eaten a posh prawn ring either).

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/11/2012 13:34

sounds like an appaling snob to me

LucilleBluth · 14/11/2012 13:40

I haven't stepped foot in an Iceland store for years, only because I'm lazy and get pretty much everything from Sainsbury's......that's also because I'm lazy and can't be arsed to fight the traffic across town to get to Asda.

I did laugh last year though when DH and DS's 1 & 2 returned from a trip to the cinema ladened with Iceland bags full of those Shrimp and Chip party cones......the advertising had obviously worked on them big time.

MotherfuckingMorrisMan · 14/11/2012 14:22

I am glad I am not the only foreign supermarket geek. There isn't much variety in the bit of France I go to (middle of nowhere in a non-touritsy spot) - it is either Casino or a bizarre place called Shopi.

And now I want a great big bag of dijon flavoured crisps, sold in bags as big as a santa sack. [Grin]
