Racism? Get a grip Hmm

I love fireworks, but not when they start at 6pm and carry on til pass midnight

DilysPrice · 14/11/2012 13:46

Seriously butter? Don't you feel that New Year's fireworks displays would be somewhat compromised by starting at 9:30pm? Or the Olympics closing ceremony if they'd done them inbetween Latvia and Lichtenstein?

And am Sad for FOFF who is apparently living in Saudi Arabia. Come back to England FOFF; we have loads of carol singers here.

FellowshipOfFestiveFellows · 14/11/2012 14:16

I fail to see any racism. I love fireworks. I do not, however, like them until the small hours of the morning, on a school night, in a residential area, when they are proper display fireworks that strong they set of car and bike alarms, being set off in a multitude of gardens and at points out the front as well. I wouldn't care what religion or race you were, its simply not on. You expect it late on NYE, but not on nights like last night. I am flipping shattered today as were both my dcs- dd didn't want to go to school as she was tired, and ds has been a misery guts all day from sleepiness. There was no escaping the noise, no matter where we were in the house.

FellowshipOfFestiveFellows · 14/11/2012 14:20

Actually Dilys my local area no longer allow carol singing in the center, any mention of religious links to Christmas is banned, my dd had a Season Show in December where they sang about Shaking the Banana- no mention of Christmas at all.

Where I used to live (in Kent) I worked in a big named store, and a member of the council came in and told us to stop playing Christmas songs or we'd be fined, and that we were not to wear Tinsel in our hair either. It was the same at school too.

All in England I'm afraid.

PseudoBadger · 14/11/2012 14:23

Do you live in the Daily Mail? :o

Whatnowffs · 14/11/2012 14:26

There really is a very simple answer to all of this - quiet fireworks Grin I'm not even joking, we don't need the big bangs for a spectacular display. They never used to be this loud, now its all about who can make the most noise.

Whatnowffs · 14/11/2012 14:27

I mean, its not rocket science is it.......................

marjproops · 14/11/2012 17:31

Does Christmas day last 2 weeks? does easter sunday?

So why the hell does firework NIGHT (singular) last over 2 weeks and Diwali just as long?

My sis burnt herself last night cos she was cooking and neighbours let off fireworks and gave her asuch fright she knocked over boiling pan and burned herself and had to be rushed to hospital. shes ok but said everyone at the hospital (staff) was complaining about the bloody fireworks making A & E fullup and not just for 1 night.

Fireworks should be banned and ONLY public displays ON THE NIGHT. and not late either.

Dont these people have children/pets/elderly?

DilysPrice · 14/11/2012 17:41

You have a point whatnow - I think that noise is a big part of the thrill of a good display, but there's a case for limiting the noisy ones to licenced public displays on 3/4 nights a year, and only letting the general public buy quieter fireworks.

choccyp1g · 14/11/2012 17:49

Oh come on Marje, Christmas does last for weeks, the school fairs start at the end of November, the carol services and parties all through November, Christmas trees go up at start of December till twelfth night....

marjproops · 14/11/2012 17:53

I said Christmas DAY.not christmas months, and theres a differnece in noise. yes the build up is from sept in the shops etc and schools etc but its not as noisy and anti-social and doesnt go on well after midnight does it?

BastardSpiders · 14/11/2012 18:34

My friend's neighbours set off fireworks two nights running the week BEFORE firework night. Hmm

She posted a calender through their door with "FIREWORK NIGHT" written in big lettering on November the fifth. Grin

FeckOffCup · 14/11/2012 19:08

YANBU, there is no need to let them off that late at night when it's dark by around 5pm at this time of year, have them earlier in the evening. I'm not a big fan of them at new year either before I am accused of racism, fireworks for any reason should be at a reasonable hour in residential areas.

foreverondiet · 14/11/2012 19:18

Totally selfish - was still hearing them at 2am.

Fair enough until 10pm or 11pm. Not fair on everyone else after that esp as midweek, they should arrest the people setting them off.

shadylane · 15/11/2012 07:19

Oh my god get over it kill joys! The people setting off fireworks probably have jobs too.

flow4 · 15/11/2012 08:32

Funnily enough, some other people were complaining about this on another social media site, and a local councillor came along and posted this advice:

"The law says you can?t usually set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am. The exceptions are:
Bonfire Night - the cut off is midnight
New Year?s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year - the cut off is 1am"

To make a complaint ring Noise Control in your local council".

marcopront · 15/11/2012 15:57

Diwali is a 5 day festival, although the main night was Tuesday. I live in India and last year on the main day of Diwali the fireworks started in the morning and finished about 5 am.
Fireworks are an integral part of the celebration they scare off evil spirits.

Startail · 15/11/2012 18:47

Can I scare off miserable firework hating MNers.

FryOneFatManic · 15/11/2012 19:03

Don't worry, it might be Diwali now, but it'll be Xmas next and some idiot will have fireworks. Then it'll be New Year and some idiot will have fireworks, then it'll be someone's birthday and some idiot will have fireworks....

Which is the unfortunate experience around here.....
