Still going here. Had tried to desensitise the dog. It worked, until Diwali. Bonfire night - ok at weekend. Diwali Tues night still going, have to get up at 06.30 not ok. If we have a party at the weekend and have music going past midnight bet they would complain...

ladytyndale · 13/11/2012 22:36

where I live there is an official fireworks thing for Diwali - tonight. I'm quite pleased that my white English dc have had a bit of diwali celebration, treats at school. mind you it helps that they will sleep through pretty much anything

nancy75 · 13/11/2012 22:36

Lak11, Diwali is not the same as you having a random party, it is an important religious festive, which I must add fireworks night is not.

OTTMummA · 13/11/2012 22:38

nancy75 I don't think that fireworks should be confined to weekends.
I would like to ban private displays mostly because of the accidents that occur, i think that fireworks should be handled by a professional.

Obviously the natural situation of how Diwali is celebrated ( with family at home ) means that it would be most likely impossible to do a public display, which is sad as i would love to experience Diwali in that way.
In these cases i think a lower time restriction of 9pm for private displays would be more acceptable.

alison222 · 13/11/2012 22:41

Actually I think Diwali is like bonfire night and new years eve and can go on until midnight. It sounds like we are just down the road from a war zone here.

AnyaKnowIt · 13/11/2012 22:42

Don't care what the reason is to still have them going off at this time of night is taking the piss

Whatnowffs · 13/11/2012 22:42

Diwali is the festival of light is it not? Maybe someone could market a load of fireworks that don't make any sound (hmmm, i could be onto something here!!)

To be fair, we haven't had any around here (maybe the odd bang here and there, all quiet now) and i'm all for respecting other peoples festivals. But it is the noise and annoyance factor of fireworks, for whatever reason - be it guy fawkes, diwalli or bloody new year (WTF??) and i don't think that they should be allowed to be so loud.

nancy75 · 13/11/2012 22:44

Would you extend that time limit to new years eve? After all there are plenty of people that don't celebrate new years eve who probably don't want to listen to fireworks at midnight. In my opinion it is 1 night a year, i really can't believe it is that much of a problem ( and my neighbors are Hindu and have been letting off fireworks for most of the evening)

ChicMama25 · 13/11/2012 22:45

I have to get up at 5.45 am for work they are still going off here and I am desperate for sleep Sad

PseudoBadger · 13/11/2012 22:46

You can only go to midnight on NYE and 5th November.

alison222 · 13/11/2012 22:47

DH told Ds to imagine the bangs as being your eyelids clanking shut Grin .
No? Don't think it will work for me either.

McChristmasPants2012 · 13/11/2012 22:47

Why the weekend, people still work weekend, children still rise early.

People who do work weekend normally hold important jobs like hospital worker, police force, fire services who need sleep.

DilysPrice · 13/11/2012 22:47

Actually it's 11pm on a random night, 12pm for bonfire night, 1am for New Year, Chinese New Year (a midnight ban would be pointless for those two) and Diwali.

PseudoBadger · 13/11/2012 22:48

Forgive me. It's 1am for Diwali, Chinese New Year and NYE. Midnight for Guy Fawkes. Sorry!

PseudoBadger · 13/11/2012 22:48

X post. Looks like I'm up until 1.30 to let the dogs out

blackeyedsusan · 13/11/2012 22:52

still going....

OTTMummA · 13/11/2012 22:53

Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night is still a long standing tradition with deep seated religious roots, i don't think it is appropriate to lessen one tradition in comparison to another.

EnjoyResponsibly · 13/11/2012 22:54

It's being going on all night here. Lots of really big, pretty ones and now one's going off like gunfire every 3 seconds.

I'm generally cool with it, but I have to say it's making me jump. Unlike other occasions where they'll all go off pretty much simultaneously, these are far more random. So just as you're dropping off, another one jolts you awake.

Have given up trying to go to sleep for the time being.

Happy Diwali!

PseudoBadger · 13/11/2012 22:55

I would take the dogs out on the lead (one is very scared) but my next door neighbour is letting them off randomly and Sod's law would be...

MickeyTheShortOne · 13/11/2012 22:57

I could've written your post OP... but also totally forgot it was Diwali today. Having said that, the fireworks have been constant here for 3 weeks. Getting a bit pissed off now!!!

blackeyedsusan · 13/11/2012 22:57

they are part of life here. it is only one night a year for diwali. at least they are being used sensibly and not being thrown in the street or off balconies on the flats....

nancy75 · 13/11/2012 22:57

Guy Fawkes night has deep seated religious roots? I thought it was to celebrate guy Fawkes not blowing up the houses of parliament? Which religion is guy Fawkes night part of?

EnjoyResponsibly · 13/11/2012 23:01

Catholic plot to murder English King James 1

OTTMummA · 13/11/2012 23:01

And Nancy75 it hasn't been 1 night here, it started the last week of October and is still going now.
I love fireworks, think that when done well they are beautiful and can create a wonderus evening and have fond memories of them,, however i don't want to her random firecrackers pop off here and there from 6pm to gone midnight every evening over the course of a month.
I live in a village and chose a house that is right next to a church, i am not religious at all, i love hearing the bells through the week and on Sunday, they are very loud, however it lasts a set amount of time, on set days and most importantly, i know when it will end.

I would rather have a whole 2-3 hours of continuous noise finishing at 9pm than intermitent disruption until the wee small hours.

Gentleness · 13/11/2012 23:02

They seem especially noisy round here or maybe just closer. Maybe by next wk there'll be some nights when my kids aren't woken... I love firework displays but still...
