to ask what my son is supposed to do with his rubbish when he returns from uni

we have a new rubbish and recycling regime, which frankly is rubbish. we are allowed 2 bags refuse over 2 week period - based on family of 4. my 3rd son is classed as a temporary resident so his rubbish isn't included and they won't provide another wheely bin. so what am i supposed to do with his rubbish - ask him to take it back to uni with him on the train? council have ignored my question.

but why should i pay £2400 council tax and then take rubbish to the tip. if i'm doing this with one bag i might as well do it with all of them.

Will he really be generating that much more rubbish?

Presumably they've put in a shit-hot recycling system to go with the new regime, so what are you throwing away? Are you sure it can't be recycled? Can you crush it? Big bin bags?

Not literally what are you throwing away, I don't want a list . What kind of thing - have you checked to see if it can be collected on another day.

well if the council assume a person generates a quarter of a bag over 2 weeks then he would generate that. over the summer hols that will be quite a lot of rubbish.

surely though the council should be prepared to pick up the rubbish for the people living at my house?

Is that just rubbish or recycling too? Do you have good recycling facilities? Because we are a family of 5, including small children so the odd nappy (though we mostly use cloth) and all the random rubbish generated by an enthusiastic artist 3 year old, food that gets dropped on teh floor by the baby and so on and we could easily, very easily keep it to a bin bag a week.

rudolph - you are confused - our rubbish collectors are even more confused - 3 weeks in they still haven't got it right. yes have recycling wheely bin which is 3/4 full after one week - one more week to go before they pick it up.

We have a 60l bin emptied fortnightly.

recycling is a pain, i'll give you that, I practically get in mine to stamp it down as we near the fortnightly collection date! I'm still rather happy with it though as until recently we had shitty little green bags that were still only collected fortnightly and blew open and littered the street with all the neighbourhood recycling.

Reduce the amount you produce as a family?
I'm surprised that a wheelie bin doesn't have enough room for your entire family's rubbish, we have the same system. Is there another reason?
Local supermarkets will often have glass and paper recycling facilities.

so how many full binbags can you get in 60l diddl? so far we haven't managed to recycle as much as we normally do because they haven't been picking various bins up

woffling - our old system picked it all up though. driving to supermarket doesn't seem very environmentally friendly - espec when council vans are travelling to our house anyway to pick up rest.

I have a 20l pedal bin in the kitchen.

There´s usually 2 of those in & a bag of sawdust from the rabbit hutch.

But we are unlimited in the amount of recycling stuff we can put out.

Do you never go anywhere that has recycling bins?

We are a family of 6 and manage with a normal wheely bin collected every fortnight and we asked for 2 recycling bins they are collected every week. They should allow you unlimited recycling.

We struggle as well our bin is filled up pretty quickly, two bin bags and its full

I don't over fill bin bags only about 1/2 full before they go in the wheelie bin, they seen to lie flatter and you can get more in.

diddl you are doing much better than us (though we've had to put food waste in as they forget to pick up bins)

thing that winds me up is that they don't seem to take into account how many people are living in a house - doesn't take much brain to realise 5 people are going to generate more rubbish than my neighbour who is only one. goodness knows what we will do when we get visitors (relatives stay as they live hours away)

We barely produce any rubbish. However, I am blessed because DH is happy to do all the recycling and all the compost. There really is next to nothing on our bin.

Our local council is great, does a fortnightly collection of each sort and will give you extra green-waste bins if you ask. And we found an extra dry-recycling wheely bin in our hedge!!

Our council has recently reduced the amount of rubbish they collect. When we are getting close to our limit I use a supermarket carrier bag to put rubbish in, then take them out in the car with me, stop at a petrol station, and use the rubbish bins there.

I have been known to stop at three petrol stations in one journey to get rid of stuff. It's not something I feel great about doing, in fact I hate being in a position where I have to do something so ludicrous. But I'm not prepared to waste my petrol doing the hour long round trip it would take to go to the dump. Our council are arses.

outraged - but surely we pay council tax to have our rubbish removed? Not some of it, but all of it? And we recycle more than our neighbours - its not like we are bad. why should you have to find other bins to put it in?
