To ask the car body shop to spray my kitchen cupboards?

I'm moving at the end of the month. into a house with a teeeny tiny kitchen.
What makes it even worse is the cupboards are a horrible dark wood, I really cba to faff around with sanding, priming, painting, re-hanging and all the rest of it.
WIBU of me to ask them to do this? My friend thinks I'm crazy for even considering it

Why the car place, rather than a painter and decorator?

Feminine · 09/11/2012 12:42

I've done it in the past.

I din't do any faffing, just painted it all white ~may times Grin

Didn't even have to all of them off the hinges.

Keep a small tin of the same paint for touch ups.

Mine were still going strong when we left that house :)

*many times.

ivegotaspottyarse · 09/11/2012 12:43

I suspect it would be cheaper

How long would you say it took for each 'normal sized' cupboard?

The whole kitchen ...and it was a lot of cupboards, took a week!

Make sure you buy decent paint though. Semi matt, something you can wipe clean.

I get from your post that its a make do type of thing anyway? :) it will be fine/nice...promise

thekidsrule · 09/11/2012 13:07

i had mine done by a friend who runs a car spraying buisness

he said they took alot of prep as i moaned i didnt want them peeling etc

4yrs later they still look really good but he did do a thorough job

approx 20 ish fronts etc including paint £150 i just bought new door knobs

really really pleased with mine

thekidsrule · 09/11/2012 13:09

by the way he took all mine of then went to his workshop

then after a week (cos he had to put his work first, fair enough)they came back

they need to be primed etc you just wont get the finish and durability otherwise

nemno · 09/11/2012 13:13

Ask for a quote definitely. My friends' kitchen was done like this and is fabulous and seems to be wearing really well. They did loads of research and they did it this way because it would be so durable with an immaculate finish, not because it was cheap.

thekidsrule · 09/11/2012 13:15

mine was mega cheap though

he did say if he knew how much work was involved or somebody else it would of been more

Dh has car painting equipment and took off all the interior doors in our house prepped them then sprayed them all while I was off visiting my Mum. The house looked like new just from doing that. Two years later the doors still look wonderful. So go and ask, you never know.

I like to have my Oak kitchen cabinets spray painted. Does anyone recommend a car body shop that will do it well? Or any other good spray paint company?

DameDoom · 29/04/2018 10:13

Abigail Ahern recommended this in one of her early interior design books. It's a great idea for a perfect finish.
Am sure loads of people cottoned on to this though so make sure you don't get overcharged,

Claire90ftm · 29/04/2018 19:12

Are you actually being serious, OP? You will be talked about by the car place for asking them to spray your kitchen. I think you're out of your mind. And you're being cheap and a bit lazy. They do cars, they don't have time to be faffing around with your kitchen. I can't believe you'd have the audacity to even think of asking them....

Pikehau · 29/04/2018 19:15

I think I saw this in the 100k house or similar show with same guy. I would call up and ask.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 29/04/2018 19:18

We have mil’s Kenwood and DH took it to one of the garages he goes to and had it spray painted to match our kitchen.

Giggorata · 30/04/2018 07:58

I had my fridge and washing machine sprayed years ago by a friend with all the gear. Bright red. It looked wonderful.

Troels · 30/04/2018 09:04

My Dh has car spraying equipment, I love the finish when he paints furniture. He has done wardrobes for Dd's room a TV stand and other stuff.
Doing the kitchen cupboards sounds great.
