Poss sensitive - To think this DJ was ridiculous and tell the radio station?

Driving about this afternoon and my local radio station played "Small Bump" by Ed Sheeran. As you may know, this is about a baby who was stillborn at four months, which is revealed at the end if the song (lyrics " you're just a small bump unborn for four months, then torn from life. Maybe you were needed up there, but we're still unaware as why). I don't expect EVERYONE to know this, but would expect someone who plays songs for a living to be aware.

The DJ came in after the song finished and said (paraphrasing) "Awwww, that's such a cute song, playing that for everyone who is pregnant at the moment!". Which, bearing in mind it's about someone LOSING a baby, is pretty fucking insensitive.

AIBU to think that she should have been aware what the song was about (or maybe just bloody listened to it properly as she played it?) and WIBU to contact the radio station, not in a 'disgusted of Tunbrudge Wells' way, more to say look, she really ought to know better, and this could have caused upset, you might want to ensure it doesn't happen again and hire more intelligent DJs

I have been talking on pm ( as well as working on report writing) and actually regret mentioning it as I would be devastated to think that someone that had used the song did not realise what the writer has said publicly the song was really about and used it.

I hearfeltedly apologise to anyone if that is the case.

The angel in the song I mean ( there are several songs with angelS) is about drugs not the winged variety.

You might as well say it now, though Tazzle, otherwise people just keep speculating. I presume I know which song you mean, but there are a few dodgy "angel" ones.

How bizzare OP, Good Riddance is my funeral choice, and 'Wires' was out when my DD was in hospital with a un diagnosed infection. I still tear up when I hear it, and she is 8 now :-(

Is Perfect Day always associated with heroin though? When surveying this with friends and families I got a lot of blank looks and muttering about the BBC advert!

I thought just about everything Lou Reed wrote was drugs associated?

ok ... I am soooooo sorry if anyone is affected by this, its was not my intention and perhaps thoughtless of me to mention in the first place.

However it has also been pointed out that perhaps someone considering its use might want to have awareness of the writers intention when writing the lyrics and commonly held views of those who have read the lyrics in detail.

In the arms of the angel by sarah mcglaughlan does not refer to the plural winged variety and the topic not one that I would connect in any way with children and their funerals.

There used to be a recording on you tube of an interview she gave in which she described who and what she wrote the song about. It is no longer available on you tube as far as I can find.

Yabu! As upsetting as it is not everything can be tip toed around.
The majority of the song talks about the excitement and prospect of having a child and maybe the dj was referring to that. I doubt the Dj or majority of the public wud have even realised

I always wondered why, some years back, a choir of kids released Angel. It was odd hearing them sing about memories seeping from veins.

In the case if the Small Bump song, there would be nothing wrong with sending a nice email. It's impossible to listen intently to the lyrics of all songs played.

I think "Perfect Day" should be banned from radio stations- FGS, it encourages kids to feed the animals at the zoo. Haven't they seen the signs?????

How on earth is Perfect Day about heroin?? Do people just assume because Lou Reed wrote a song about heroin and one or two about dealers etc that all his songs are about drugs? He drinks sangria in the park and goes to the movies, ffs. He feeds fecking animals in the zoo! (Which, I agree, is EXTREMELY irresponsible).

I think the point of perfect day is that any day is perfect if he's got his heroin. The "you" in question is heroin. So no matter what he does; pictures, zoo, sangria, he does it with heroin.

It's a really lovely song but that's what it is really about.

Pretty sure it's not an assumption about perfect day. Pretty sure Lou Reed has discusses it. Can't back that up right now though.

To be fair though, I think the lyrics of perfect day are ambiguous enough to be about what you want- could just as easily be about a lover. The lyrics of the song in the OP are less ambiguous.

Wind beneath my wings is about her friend who was always there for her but no-one ever noticed. Its from the film beaches.

Adding to puds post the line is "I was the one with all the glory, you were the one with all the strength".. It wasn't being arrogant, it was paying tribute to her friend (in the movie)

But but.... so a song might have been written about heroin, death etc... but surely the lyrics can become personal to the person who listens/loves it? I had dream a little dream at my parents funeral, might mean something else to someone else but to me means something else if that makes any sense.

I also had life is the name of the game (generation game) at my wedding, most people thought it was a little odd, but meant a lot to me. My sister had Little Donkey at hers, well yes it was summer and her husband is not a donkey but was very personal to her.
