Men are supposed (so I am told) to wear long sleeves and also dress modestly.
Most women I know cover when they have to (where they may be stopped or arrested) or if they are abroad and, say, entering a holy place. I can only comment with any confidence on those who live where the veil is enshrined in law, therefore they have very little choice in the matter, so my attitude is slanted to 'women are fighting now not to do this under fear of arrest, beating, etc.' Thank god we live somewhere where the law does not meddle in religiom (except in sriminal matters) - and I think everyone should bear that in mind. We have choices and should respect that - anyone who takes away choice (bullying, blackmail, etc) is in the wrong, so we have laws to protect the victims (again not perfect).
Minority religions will be scrutinized wherever you are - muslim, christian, jew... It is human nature to be suspicious of 'different' and those who you may perceive to reject in any way your 'norm' or beliefs.
All any of us can do is show each other that we are all ice cream (different flavours, but all ice cream nonetheless - I think thats from a kids book, isnt it?).
I think Nailak speaks a lot of sense, and I'd like to hang out with her. I dont thinl for one minute she would judge me on my looks, clother, beliefs or (weird) habits!
