To be annoyed by people referring to "Baby"?

Rather than "the baby"?

I've been for lunch with a pregnant friend today and it grated on me every time - "When baby arrives", "We've got everything ready for baby" etc. I know she can't say he or she yet, but "baby" just sounds a bit twee.

I'm perfectly ready to be told IABU!

YANBU but it will be a long pregnancy if you let these small things bother you

Yeah it grates on me a little bit too

But not as much as when people say, "The dog needs fed" or "The baby needs bathed"

they are using the word 'Baby' as a name. If you think like that it's twee but at least not incorrect.

Its better than saying "it", isn't it?

And calling babies a name while they are in utero freaks me out. So I'd prefer 'Baby' to 'Dave'.

i friggin hate it - and 'mum' used in the third person when directly addressing the person in question is worse! as in 'how is mum?'

it needs to be 'the baby' or 'your baby' ffs not just 'baby'. (not looking forward to 9 months of dealing with HCPs using baby and mum)

I actually called poor DD "The Baby" for at least the first year of her life

She's due at the end of the month - it's a recent habit - so thankfully it won't be long before she can refer to "baby" by name!

YABU. People are just being nice and interested in your and your pregnancy.

I couldn't bring myself to call my babies anything but "it". I was made to feel bad for calling them "it", by pregnancy forums and MN and once by my sonographer , I made a note of saying "baby" infront of her!. But looking back, they were both "it" for me. I'm not a bad unloving mother, and i call my children lovey nicknames now, but couldn't do it whilst pregnant. So yeah, someone saying "baby" would piss me off.

I do this apparently, drives my dh wild. Not sure where it comes from but part of it is trying to avoid using the appropriate pronoun as keeping gender a secret, and baby doesn't feel like an "it"

but why can't you say the baby, or my baby or our baby...

you don't say 'brother is going to come round today' or 'father is hungry' you say 'my brother' or 'your father'.

So obviously don't do it just with dh but when speaking to other people!

I should of course but it's hard enough to remember to say baby rather than he, and have stumbled a few times, sticking in two words rather than one might just be too much for my pregnant brain!

I also find it a bit twee. My bf does it, and also refers to her DH as hubby. I wouldn't do it, but she's my best friend, so I just ignore it! We can't all be alike I suppose or the world would be a bit dull!

Oh god yes! Also hate "mum" when used by midwives, health visitors etc, in fact by anyone who isn't the child of the person they're calling mum.

That annoys you? Blimey.... You must spend your entire life pi55ed off if stuff like that is enough to get you twitchy enough to post about it.

YABU - for being so petty

I don't mind this so much.

'Bubs' on the other hand makes me want to rip someone's head off and throw it at them my teeth itch.

I echo other posters who wonder at having at the annoyance this is causing you....seriously OP, do you drift through life actively looking for things to wind you up?

Like other posters have said, if this annoys you then, bloody hell, you'll be permanently pissed off once baby arrives.

I'm 39 weeks and I don't like it. My baby sex unknown is known as "it" "he/she" or "the baby". Usually we call it, "it".

YANBU, it also makes me go crazy in the head when the midwife/hv refer to me as 'mum' rather than my actual name.

It's better than Flump...
