...to put tights on my DS?

DS (18mo) is a Warmth Refuser. He will not wear a hat, scarf, gloves, socks, boots or shoes. Attempts to apply these items to him are met with screaming.

I fight them all onto him and leave the house: hat usually removed by doorstep. Scarf and gloves by the gate. Before we've been out ten minutes he will have his socks and shoes off and I will have wrestled him into his coat a couple of times.

I've taken to layering him up like a woolly little onion (vest, gro, tshirt, hoodie, etc) to keep him warm but he will not wear shoes and I can't shop for pretty house stuff essentials while he's screaming. BUT his little toes are freezing by the time we get home.

I want to put woolly tights under his trousers. DH is highly upset at the idea. AIBU?

If you really don't want tights Jojo Maman Bebe do 'long johns' but they don't have feet so they're not as good. I've just bought DS some nice tights from there, they do a lot of different styles & colours. I actually found it a bit strange that they're labled as 'girls tights' as I know a lot of boys wear them.

Lueji · 02/11/2012 12:42

I did that.
Always difficult to find any not in pink, but even so, who's going to notice?

Also, men can wear tights and not be gay.
Dancers, gymnasts, actors, swimmers.

MrsReiver · 02/11/2012 12:43

Do you have a Lidl nearby? I got some gorgeous dinosaur tights from there for my DS.

IneedAsockamnesty · 02/11/2012 13:04

DingDongBelle · 02/11/2012 13:16

tights are good for boys and girls.

i have a DD, but she crawls her socks off - we put tights under her trousers and it stops the socks coming off.
so she's wearing tights and socks.

i would do the same to a boy.

nickelrocketgoBooooooom · 02/11/2012 13:22

debenhams has some very manly tights in here

nickelrocketgoBooooooom · 02/11/2012 13:28

ahem

Idocrazythings · 02/11/2012 13:34

I even have manly leg warmers for when his trousers ride up if he is in the "ergo baby". lovely boys tights

bumpybecky · 02/11/2012 13:43

My ds wore tights when he was very little. He had three big sisters, so we had plenty of tights. Must admit he never wore the pink ones though!

He got very upset at preschool when they put him in tights (he'd got very wet and so had half the group and they'd run out of dry socks!). They had to call me and ask me to bring dry socks for pickup. He was less than 3 then and was very clear that tights were for girls.

forevergreek · 02/11/2012 13:55

Would also look at an all in one snow suit at this age. Can just zip him in from feet to neck! Perfect for in shops also as can just unzip to cool down

When I lived in Switzerland all children would come over for playdates in winter wearin snowsuits/ ski trousers/ jackets. The suits and ski trousers always came off, little mocassion slippers on and they would all go off merrily to play in jumpers and tights with slippers ( ages prob small baby up to 8years approx). It was just instinct that they would take them off as always had and everyone does. I mean you aren't going to play in ski trousers are you? And falling in snow/ ago g in it would leave them soaked and cold if just in jeans over thermals like most adults do

blackeyedsusan · 02/11/2012 14:07

i put ds in tighrts when he was little to keep his feet warm... he is fine.. (hides the photos of ds wearing a dress at school dressupo day, age 4. )

Firawla · 02/11/2012 14:11

of course yanbu, would your dh rather he gets uncomfy with cold feet??
my 14 months is in tights today, i did it to my older two when they were younger too - all boys. weather is really cold, its the sensible thing to do. looks cute too

MrsReiver · 02/11/2012 14:35

Yup, dinosaur tights. Complete with reinforced toes and knees. Only good for 2 legged dinos though Smile

WhatsTheBuzz · 02/11/2012 14:37

I hope YANBU because my 17mo DS will not leave his socks on so will be wearing tights as soon as I find some suitable pairs... Hmm

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 02/11/2012 14:39

YANBU - it's cold & you're keeping him warm! Grin

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 02/11/2012 14:42

My sis had to put 18 mo nephew in his 5 yr old sis's pink tights and spare fleece when he was carsick all over his clothes on a day out last spring.

He was happy as Larry (mind you DSis did call him the only gay in the village!)

Sure he hadn't a clue what he was wearing, and was nice and cosy.

BiL was horrified at the photos though, thought his darling son might catch gay from wearing pink.... (he'd want to check FB, newest piccies of DN have him wearing his sister's shoes and sparkly hairband)

Dsis has since bought blue tights for the winter as DN is now flinging off socks and shoes the min he gets in the buggy.

DingDongBelle · 02/11/2012 16:36

Ah I'm on a bit of a spree now and have ordered a dozen pairs bet DS hates them Grin

I love the term "warmth refuser" OP!

We use tights - M & S tend to have multipacks of good colours or we just use school uniform packs - grey/navy/black = cheap.

Also one of high collared coats with hood - DS wont have hat or a hood up but you can turn up high collars and hoods to protect ears.

Rain trousers that are too long for him are v useful in buggy to come down over feet and keep them dry when shoes keep getting kicked off.

Also sometimes funky wellies with child-appealing designs will bribe persuade them into keeping the wellies on in buggy where shoes would be refused.

And have resorted to taking him out in his all-in-one sleepsuit sometimes to keep feet covered.

12ylnon · 02/11/2012 17:05

Did it all the time with DS, his little legs used to get so cold! We just put them under trousers, exactly the same as long johns really. Your DH is being ridiculous.

fayette · 02/11/2012 17:18

I used to put my 2 x ds in tights when they were babies. Kept them extra warm and socks used to slip off. Nothing unreasonable about.

motherinferior · 02/11/2012 17:22

Slightly at a tangent, even Norwich has The Gays these days, all out and proud and all. One of my classmates from the long-ago 1970s has morphed from waifish youth to porky ageing queen.

(This proves nothing, obviously, I just thought I'd mention it.)

yellowsubmarine53 · 02/11/2012 17:32

This is the first of several such titled threads this winter...

Of course it's perfectly sensible to put all young children in tights. My ds has regularly sported his older sister's tights throughout his 3 years.

Oh, and also her hats, handbags, tutus and ballet shoes, but don't mention that to your dh.

Isandri · 02/11/2012 18:01

Danish boys wear tights and norwegian boys too! Maybe it's a Viking thing.

My very manly Danish husband wore tights when he was little. He turned out ok :)
