to think you should make your bed in the morning?

Just read elsewhere that made me think some people don't bother. I couldn't leave the house without making my bed, it takes about 30 seconds and if I haven't done it, I sort of feel like I've forgotten to put any knickers on or something, as though I've not done something really important.
I know someone in RL who doesn't and I think she's totally lazy!
Do people really not bother to do this?

i never make my bed, i leave it open to air all day. so should you. stop being so silly.

bedmonster · 01/11/2012 09:43

beanbagz I highly doubt he does, he is generally known amongst his family as Stinky Pete due to his, relaxed hygiene standards!

And i'm even more grossed out about letting animals sleep on beds. Not making beds is lazy but letting a pet on the bed just seems disgusting!!!

GetOrf after a previous bed linen-related thread I tried your method for putting on the duvet cover (inside-out and flip)...

...it works! :) I do have to stand on the bed as I'm tiny, and I couldn't do it with bigger than a double duvet due to arm-span issues. But it works. It's amazing. How did I not find out about this before...

Trills · 01/11/2012 09:45

What does making a bed actually achieve?

I leave my bedroom in the morning and I go back to it when I want to go to sleep.

In the meantime nobody looks at it, so it doesn't matter what it looks like.

When I get into it, having made the bed does not make it more comfortable or warmer or easier to get into.

So what does it achieve?

FreakoidOrganisoid · 01/11/2012 09:46

I usually hang my duvet over the bannister, smooth out the sheet and plump up the pillows. Or fold the duvet back and do the same with sheet and pillows. Or i make it properly after airing it while i get ready. It varies which of these methods I prefer on any given day. I never like to leave it in its just got out of mess though.

Mrsjay · 01/11/2012 09:48

I tend to think of it as airing my bed not leaving it a crumpled mess Grin you are supposed to leave your bed aired I am not sure why you care or think it is a terrible thing are you my mother that is something she would say Grin

cheekydevil · 01/11/2012 09:48

bedmonster your bed is probably full of bedmonsters! Grin

DawnOfTheDee · 01/11/2012 09:51

I tried to get DD (9mo) to make her own bed but she just said 'babababababa', laughed and crawled off. Bet this is my own fault for being a lazy slattern who doesn't make her own bed. Bah.

bedmonster · 01/11/2012 09:51

ephiny I'm not saying that you should make your bed at all, it was just a general musing on what other people do. I have always been taught to leave my house as I would like to find it. I have 3DC and its near on impossible to have a tidy house but I can keep my bedroom as a space where I relax and for me that means it looks tidy when it walks in.
I haven't at any point said I particularly cared what other people do with theirs. Of course I have an opinion but everyone here does or else they wouldn't have bothered posting.

Er, yes Dawn of course that was what I was saying.

Yay Ephiny Grin

It is a good way of doing it, takes seconds.

The amounts of times I have done it absent mindedly and ended up with the duvet cover on inside out...

CajaDeLaMemoria · 01/11/2012 09:56

I'm baffled.

Why would not making your bed make you dirty or minging? It's not like anyone said they don't change the sheets, just that they aren't bothered about spending a few minutes pulling everything back into place.

Sometimes I do mine, sometimes I don't. It tends to depend if I'm in a rush, and how well I'm feeling. It's automatic whatever happens - I never actively think about making it, it's just done or its not. Like I automatically change the duvet/wash the sheets etc.

I just can't get my head around why you are cleaner if you make your bed especially as scientific evidence says otherwise and how on earth you can judge someone if they don't make their bed.

I've never made my bed. The duvet gets chucked back and that's it.

Open your windows, turn your covers back and let it breath.
And Hoover your matress regularly.

MissWinklyParadiso · 01/11/2012 10:02

Lazy? LAZY??? I didn't make my bed because I left my otherwise impeccably tidy house for work at 6am. Every last second in bed is far more precious than a straight duvet that nobody will see anyway!

Catniss · 01/11/2012 10:07

I despise getting into an unmade bed, but, usually have to make it on an evening before I get into bed as there is a mahoosive cat laid there all day and I don't have the heart to move him.

Inneedofbrandy · 01/11/2012 10:08

I make my bed, dc make theirs every morning, I don't do it the second I'm out of bed but yes by the time I leave the house or it's lunch time it's done.

I don't really care about other peoples bed but I don't think Ive been in anyone's house who hasn't made the bed that morning.

Bunbaker · 01/11/2012 10:09

It is actullay quite unhealthy to make your bed without airing it for a few hours. Everyone sweats at night and this makes an ideal environment for house dust mites. If you don't air the bed with the window open for an hour or two dust mites, moulds, and other microbial life have more of an opportunity to multiply.

I never make beds up before lunchtime.
