to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

Joan

Why do you care?

You don't seem concerned with emissions or anything tangible. You just seem to deride and hate (sight unseen) all 4x4s and all 4x4 drivers Confused There are others like you but they usually have witty observations to make - you don't.

You sound a bit of a sour and humourless tbh.

nothing to do with the face that I love my Volvo XC90

I just don't get why other people care so much about stuff like this. It is hardly a big deal is it?

I drive a big, fuck off RR Sport. It's black with blacked out windows. I love it. That's why I drive it. Sometimes it's clean as I get it washed as I hate getting my nice clothes dirty when I am going out.

I don't have to justify myself to anybody, least of all not some twat who makes sweeping assumptions about children based on the car their parents drive.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2012 11:15

And, by the same token, why post on it if you think it all so silly?

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 11:15

Hi lovely Everlong Smile This feels rather like deja vu doesn't it?!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2012 11:16

Well I'm sure you wouldn't like my car or bike any more than I like yours, Rinder! It's taste as well as ethics, isn't it?

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 11:17

I suppose I care about it because it makes it hard for me to drive safely, if everyone else seemingly has a huge fuck off car.

I can't see through them or past them or over them. I can't park next to them, because reversing out from the space with no visibility puts my children at risk of a rear end sidelong hit.

Those are my reasons for caring about it.

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 11:17

The thing is Steaming, I just don't care about your car. Or about your ethics really. They are just not important enough to be on my radar.

I love these threads, so many assumptions based on a vehicle, they keep me entertained all day.
For what it's worth we own a real 4x4, ex military land rover defender and we live in a city.

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 31/10/2012 11:19

Personally I laugh at people in convertibles. I think they are the height of naffness.

Each to their own.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 11:19

See Rinders that is kind of why it matters to those of us with smaller cars.

We might not even register on your radar, but you block out ours if we happen to get into the wrong place at the wrong time.

Does that make sense? We cannot afford to ignore you, and we physically can't do it even if we want to.

Yes it would be lovely if everyone could drive what the heck they liked, without any impact on other road users, but it doesn't really work that way.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2012 11:20

No. But like a nasty dress or an ugly house, when I see a car like that I'm going to have an opinion about it. We don't go about never noticing or having an opinion on anything, do we? That's not how humans are!

Jins · 31/10/2012 11:21

I've heard this before. I'm out riding my bicycle, which people assume cost about £50, because they know nothing about bicycles. And they think it's because I can't afford to drive a car.

Oh you ride a bike. Maybe you're a paperboy???

Sounds stupid doesn't it? Read your OP about 4x4 ownership and farming

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 31/10/2012 11:21

But Eds - how do you cope with transit vans, and delivery vehicles, and HGVs?

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 11:22

Perhaps something like a driving awareness course would help you Eds? To give you some help to drive defensively, looking ahead and behind and realising that not just small cars are on the road. Big trucks block my view sometimes. But I realise that is what roads are all about. Different size vehicles, being driven by drivers with different skill levels.

Jins · 31/10/2012 11:22

EdsRedeemingQualities do you feel the same way about other vehicles that are bigger than yours? Vans? Ambulances?

Or is it just large cars?

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 11:23

Exit, I cope with them however I can manage to, and because they're utility vehicles, I make allowances for the fact that they need to be that size.

I'm only talking about unnecessarily and swankily huge cars that aren't needed to be that big.

Genuine reason for large vehicle = Ok, large vehicle in order to look big and important = not Ok, in my humble opinion.

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 11:24

Joan

Why do you care?

I see far too many of them at school. I think they are in a majority among the parents. And they get in the way, quite frankly. You could have a whole army of bicycles sweeping down the street, but you just get one fat-assed 4x4 and it 2/3 of the road.

There are cars there too, but whether it is just sheer numbers or a greater propensity for their drivers to drive and park like cunts, it always the 4x4s that get in the way.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 11:24

Rinders how thoughtful of you. I've been driving for nearly 20 years now and while I'm not that great, I'm decent.

Doing an awareness course won't help me see through a large vehicle.

Binkyridesagain · 31/10/2012 11:24

I wonder how drivers who have an original mini cope with all those big micras, fiestas etc on the road, it must be a nightmare trying to see anything. Smile

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 11:24

Personally I laugh at people in convertibles. I think they are the height of naffness.

Fair enough.
