to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

Well if there was "a woman at your pre-school" that couldn't drive her car, that clearly means all 4x4 drivers are incompetent. Hmm

MIL drives a Clio; she's the worst driver I've ever seen and she couldn't parallel park to save her life. I don't assume ALL Clio drivers are crap.

valiumredhead · 31/10/2012 10:41

Did you answer the question 'do you fly OP?'

theodorakis · 31/10/2012 10:42

I love Qatar, if the space is tight I just get the valet guy to do it for me. Or go somewhere else that has bigger spaces.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 10:43

Yes having to get to work is an important reason to have one imo. Our fiesta is unuseable in the snow. We got a sledge for days like that Smile but then, I don't have to be somewhere, so we can stay in usually.

I totally understand that a lot of people need these big cars. But seriously, the ones that aren't particularly efficient, or roadholding, or practical, but just look like massive (usually white) show-off cars - I don't think there's any worth in those.

I have a hierarchy of acceptability for large cars.

  1. Disability/need it for job/location
  2. Need it in the winter to get to work
  3. Given it by someone with no taste and feel obliged to use it
  4. That's about it.

Yes Poppy that's EXACTLY what I concluded...honestly I said nothing of the sort, It was an example of someone who was unable to park her car.

Is that Ok?

I'm loving the visions I'm getting of anti social lumps of metal. Are they wearing baseball caps, omitting obnoxious drum and bass tunes and spitting in the street?

Jins · 31/10/2012 10:49

I too have a hierarchy of acceptability for large cars.

  1. It's none of my business what someone else buys and drives
  2. That's about it
JoanBias · 31/10/2012 10:50

"However this time the OP (and her daughter) have judged someone on the basis of a car parked in a car park! "

I merely observed that they might be a farmer. Not an insult surely?

Anyway I've learned from this thread that actually the 4x4s driving a mile to school along well-surfaced roads are actually a figment of my imagination and they are actually owned so they can help launch the Esher lifeboat and rescue old ladies from the harsh Surrey blizzards.

So, mea culpa.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 31/10/2012 10:51

I like your hierarchy jins

I think it's rude to tell people what to spend their money on! I don't go round telling people what cars I think are acceptable!

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 10:51

"Did you answer the question 'do you fly OP?'"

Only on weekends.

OP posts:
PoppyAmex · 31/10/2012 10:52

"Oh and often people cannot drive them properly - or park them."

This would suggest to me that you are referring to 4x4 drivers.

As for your "hierarchy of acceptability", fortunately you dont have to approve of my choices and how I spend my money.

WearingGreen · 31/10/2012 10:52

If its not an insult then why did you say

"I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?"

in your OP?

MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 10:52

Joan how do you know what people do with their motors when they aren't on the school run

Actually what's it got to do with you?

And are you disputing that many 4x4 owners volunteer and do a lot of good?

DP has a 4x4, it's more comfortable and is more practical ( and less arsey) than a transit van.

He has to travel the uk, we can get baby seats in the back and the kids too. If we didn't have it, we'd have 3 vehicles on the drive.

When it's been Valeted it looks shiny.

theroseofwait · 31/10/2012 10:56

If the Surrey blizzards comment was aimed at me I actually live in Yorkshire, but you're still being unreasonable!

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 10:57

I usually find people who slag 4x4's off are the very same people who can't afford to buy/ run one

I've heard this before. I'm out riding my bicycle, which people assume cost about £50, because they know nothing about bicycles. And they think it's because I can't afford to drive a car. Actually I have a very nice convertible, but I don't like traffic, I don't like parking, and I don't like premature death due to obesity and inactivity. So the car largely stays at home.

No, course I don't think they care! I don't have opinions in the expectation anyone cares, but I think 4x4s are pretty crap, and if nobody cares whether my jealous little mind thinks that then why are they on this thread getting cross?

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 11:01

Still reading the thread. Am on page 5 of 8 and came across the OP saying, "I don't have a problem with not getting up early enough to park like a cunt". Nope, you just get up early enough to think like one Smile

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 11:01

WholeLottaRosie, 4x4 is often used in the UK as a synonym for SUV.

OP posts:
MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 11:02

My dh drives a van. Drives landrovers off the road. Now his work has changed he doesn't need as much space as in has in the van but still needs some 'utility'.

The sensible option would be to get one of his toys on the road then we can all fit in it, he gets the utility aspect he needs.

But that makes us dim.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 11:02

No Poppy you can spend it on what you like. Just stating my views.

When I use the word 'often' it means often - btw - not 'all 4x4 drivers are thick'. There is a big difference there.

I hope that is clear.

MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 11:04

Rosie is right though, it's incorrect to assume every 4x4 is high and landrover-esque.

My mum had the tiniest Subaru ever, the viveo or something like that, years ago. T'was a 4x4
