to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

...people look at you like shit when you walk in because they perceive you don't have money to spend, then that's very different from someone with a bling-bling Q7

Not every rich person has a Range Rover of course

You've totally lost me now. Where does the RR fit in?

You mentioned Oprah. I was doing the Jerry Springer chant.

I really can't understand people that waste their life getting her up about what a person drives. I really couldn't give a shit. It's someone else's life and someone else's money.

Unless it's a BMW X6 but only because I think they're fugly [hgrin]

No seriously, who cares what people want to drive Confused

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 00:44

Where does the RR fit in?

A RR is in the same market segment as Q7, the ostentatious off-road vehicle too costly to actually use off-road. They are interchangeable. XC90 and X5 are the other key ones I believe.

I use mine for work. I'm not a farmer. I drive in the peak district at night, some of it on crap roads. I could by a separate people carrier for the school run (4 dcs, 3 in car seats) to keep judey fools happy but it seems an expensive indulgence. I could not bother ever cleaning it but its an expensive car and I generally like to look after my stuff. I like leather seats too, I can't believe anybody gives a shit what my car seats are made out of but I've never looked at a second hand 4x4 without leather seats. I'm not sure they exist or why non leather would be morally superior.

sleeplessinsuburbia · 31/10/2012 00:48

Ooh and my 4wd is chav bling bling white too! Nice!

ShellyBoobs · 31/10/2012 00:49

Same issue of being too high and blocking other road users' view.

You're talking bollocks now. Well you were before, but nevermind that

What have pick ups got to do with height?

These are pickups

You know, like a car but for carrying 'stuff'?

WearingGreen · 31/10/2012 00:50

How can something be too ostentatious to use off road? I have an XC90, you can use it off road, I can guarantee it. It was off road less than an hour ago. I'm also not sure what too costly means. You can get a really decent second hand XC90 for around 7K. They last forever except for the bastard cam belts. 7K is a lot of money but not in terms of cars.

I love a jealousy thread.

Op you are making yourself look very silly.

FatimaLovesBread · 31/10/2012 00:55

"No, not big cars, just 4x4s."
"I don't have a problem with four-wheel drive as a concept. Nor with gas guzzling. But these ridiculous high cars block my view and get on my tits."

I think the OP has confused herself. Is it 4x4s that are the problem or these big cars blocking your view?
Or just what ever car you fancy making a hilarious joke about that day?

Joan, google recumbent low racer, that is what the man here has, and what it sounds like the article is talking about, if you read on it also mentions the cyclist went in to a tractor, now admittedly I am from London and we don't see too many tractors on the road but I doubt that tractors are purchased as a status symbol even in the country side.

WelshMaenad · 31/10/2012 01:00

Can I ask how you feel about buses and HGVs?

nancy75 · 31/10/2012 01:04

Welsh, busses are probably ok because they don't tend to be in bling bling white, hgvs on the other hand....

Sabetudo.net?

That's the Top Gear website is it?

No wait, it's a Brazilian site because that vehicle is only sold in Brazil.

And a T-reg VW?

Hardly representative of the actual vehicles on the road today is it.

These are current cars sold actually in Britain, rather than 6,000 miles away:

If the cyclist went into a tractor, how come the tractor paid £9k for his replacement parts? Sounds like the tractor went into the cyclist to me.

From what I've read there's an importer of recumbent cycles in the area and there is in fact more than one such vehicle being conflated.

IneedAgoldenNickname · 31/10/2012 01:08

nancy75 I doubt that tractors are purchased as a status symbol even in the country side.

Whenever I'm visiting my brother in the arse end of nowhere in Somerset, one of the local young farmer lads comes in the pub and asks me if I fancy a ride in his tractor Grin Mind you I'm not sure that's because tractors are a status symbol, I think ours just a bad chat up line!

nancy75 · 31/10/2012 01:13

The point was the article says the cyclist was in a lying down position, which is not the picture you linked to, and the 2 vehicles mentioned were a pick up truck and a tractor, not q7s or range rovers. If it's the kind of place where people drive tractors it's probably the kind of place where you would have a good reason for driving a pick up.

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 01:15

I love a jealousy thread.

Why would I be jealous of looking ridiculous?

I sat behind a Ferrari 599, complete with F599 number plate (just F599, not this C 351 BOB or whatever people think is) driving through Horsham the other day. It was driven impeccably, within the speed limit at all times, and really quite a beauty to behold.

A white Audi Q7 with three bratty children in it on the other hand? Jealous? [hgrin]

OP posts:
JoanBias · 31/10/2012 01:19

If it's the kind of place where people drive tractors it's probably the kind of place where you would have a good reason for driving a pick up.

Sure. But that doesn't give you the right to run people over.

If you drive an HGV for example, you need to pass greater training, show more awareness, try to avoid accidents that would not necessarily be your fault, but are still avoidable if you drive with a little extra care.

It's quite possible that he uses his pick-up truck to haul logs or whatever, and that's his right, but equally other road users have a right to be there too, without their elected Councillor saying they deserve to die.

OP posts:
nancy75 · 31/10/2012 01:23

Just a guess here, but I think the deserve to die comment might have been a joke? If the cycle is anything like the style I have seen it is ridiculous that it is allowed on the road, 4x4comments aside, you really can not see them even from a small car.
