to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

I'm puzzled by the original post, OP. I'm really struggling to think why your DD would pick out a Landrover and think it was strange to see one parked, you know, in a car park. And all shiny as well!! Fancy that.

Sparklingbroomstick · 31/10/2012 15:22

Since when has it been unreasonable to take the piss out of stuff? You don't need to start a thread about it though. Confused

Not really MN at it's finest though.....

FunBagFreddie · 31/10/2012 15:23

We need a MN facepalm smiley. MNHQ, can we please have one?

Sparklingbroomstick · 31/10/2012 15:25

Or a [not this old chestnut again] emoticon. Could be a picture of a chestnut. Grin

ClippedPhoenix · 31/10/2012 15:28

In fulham it's predominantly 4 x 4's Grin

MrsBethel · 31/10/2012 15:38

I believe the commonly used terms is 'Chelsea tractor'.

And the driver is usually referred to as a 'tosser'.

FunBagFreddie · 31/10/2012 15:38

Yes, I like the chestnut idea. Grin

What about a bollocks emoticon, or is that too obvious? Grin

MrsBethel · 31/10/2012 15:44

What does MN do when there are no more topics left?

I used to wonder what music would do when they ran out of tunes. Now the barrel is getting pretty low, we know: sampling, rap, X factor.

Sparklingbroomstick · 31/10/2012 15:47

How about this? Sums it up nicely for me.

prudencesmom · 31/10/2012 15:50

How about discussing 4x4 a la Ulrika.
4 kids to 4 fathers. Scandalous indeed.
That would be a far more interesting 4x4 thread.......
But for now

AnitaManeater · 31/10/2012 15:53

I love 4x4's. Bigger the better.

BadgersGhostlyRetreatWoo · 31/10/2012 15:56

I have that on my Sky e-mails Ever. It is so tempting to insert it into a serious email of complaint. IIRC you can have it with or without flies.

Well that's a new one.... Hmm.

I have no respect for decision to drive a big 4x4 in the city and I think the amount of fuel used is selfish and irresponsible. People who drive them do not care that others think this, as they have explained. So why on earth are they getting so het up about it?

In case anyone's still unclear, I have not said a word about anyone's children, I have said I personally consider them a naff and dim choice of car, and I further think they're a bit of a vulgar display of conspicuous consumption. I agreed with a poster who said that what she was saying made her sound like something. I used her words and agreed with them.

FunBagFreddie · 31/10/2012 16:13

You could say that about most new cars though. The 4x4 owners I know didn't buy new.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2012 16:16

Well, when we get our new car that we are being made to have because of a company car scheme, it will be the one with the lowest emissions according to the spreadsheet of available options. So not really a show of wealth at all, and a lot of new cars are company cars that many people would rather not have.

When parents at school show up in RR sports with personalised number plates, that's a conspicuous show of wealth.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 31/10/2012 16:17

My dh drives a Citroen Berlingo. Much loved by parents everywhere for having seven seats. It is bigger than my car but it's not technically a 4x4. It's quite high and has got a big high front to it which a pedestrian may well bounce off rather painfully but that's alright because it's not a 4x4.

So does that mean he gets off then?

I drive a VW Passat estate which I am hooping to trade up for an XC90. Just because I want to, really. It will have more seats and be a bit more useful round the farm etc but I just want one, really. And I couldn't give a shiny shit what anyone thinks. It won't be a new one either, can't afford it.

Incidentally I've just looked it up and it would be 27mm higher than my car, 27mm longer and 78mm wider. As I've managed to drive the Passat for several years without killing anyone I'm hoping I'll not find the new car too much of a challenge.

Doobydoo · 31/10/2012 16:22

YANBU...Unless they driven by farmers. We have a tiny car and am always Hmm when taking son to school (in countryside) how many 4by 4 drivers are too scared or something to go onto the verge to passGrin...also seem to be mainly driven by women.I would have one though!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 31/10/2012 16:22

Oh that should read 227mm higher, obviously...

[duh]

skaen · 31/10/2012 16:42

I have a 9 year old Xc90 with 100k miles on the clock (25000) of which were down to us when we bought the 4 yo car.we use it for dinghy sailing and towing a glider trailer I also have a bellabike.

I never drive to work, rarely drive on the school run but do drive to London as it is a 2 hour drive or 3.5 hour train journey. I don't think I am a twat because I haven't bought another car for the 4 times a year or so when we visit friends in London.

SoSoMamanBebe · 31/10/2012 17:06

theorginal it's a bit vulgar to say "a bit of x", one says "a bit x", really.

I want a black shiny Vogue. Have no idea whether it will finally happen but, if when it does, I shall also be skinny, blonde, european and rich with a perfect, cultured husband and well mannered, bright, tidy children, who are all obedient.
