to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

"I just mainly think they're naff and the people who drive them probably a bit naff and dim."

The poster was being sarcastic when she said that she stopped at traffic lights, looked after other people etc. and realised "that made her sound like a cunt".

Why am I arguing with people that insult children based on the car their parent drives?

scottishmummy · 31/10/2012 13:16

any needless cyclist or pedestrian death is harrowing
some cyclists are reckless and cause alarm and injury to pedestrians
cyclists should be safe riding, and should also ride safely

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/10/2012 13:16

Haven't insulted anyone's children. Not once. I don't respect the decision to drive a 4x4 in the city. Have said nothing about anyone's children.

You might be getting a bit confused over who has posted what.

I do think considering your car as a 'fuck off' vehicle, and being loud and proud about its high emissions, sounds a bit crappy to be honest, no matter how many pats on the back you give yourself for stopping at traffic lights.

squeakytoy · 31/10/2012 13:18

Both our 4 x 4s fits into any parking space, very easily. They also have parking sensors on them, so it is never any problem at all to reverse them neatly either.

jjuice · 31/10/2012 13:19

errm and I was quoting all the people mostly the op who have accused all 4x4 drivers of the same stereotypical behaviour. some of the descriptions are beyond belief.

squeakytoy · 31/10/2012 13:20

and we can all cut and paste too...

"whilst certain 4x4s do produce more pollutants than certain small cars.. they are by no means the worst. In fact, some small cars are worse in terms of fuel efficiency than some of the 4x4's. And this is the big problem with trying to generalise about a vehicle type. It is STATISTICALLY WRONG to say that 4x4s are terrible polluting vehicles.... a Ford Focus Zetec produces MORE CO2 per kilometer than a Nissan X-Trail, a Mini Cooper does fewer miles to the gallon than a Land Rover Freelander... "

jjuice · 31/10/2012 13:24

Thanks Poppy.

Tell me about it :(

Those miles are less comfortable as well due to the lack of power steering and parking it can be a bastard.

valiumredhead · 31/10/2012 13:38

I'd rather someone parked gingerly and took their time LaQ than charged ahead regardless. I was a bit over cautious at first after learning in a Corsa then going into a bigger car.

MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 13:39

Justfloatingby what on earth are people driving round your way? Humvees? Actual tanks? Lorries? In fact even lorries don't take up 2 lanes!

Are you sure?

"a Ford Focus Zetec produces MORE CO2 per kilometer than a Nissan X-Trail,"

Wrong

The X-Trail does 168g/km in manual, 188g in automatic.
www.nissan.co.uk/GB/en/environment/co2-emissions/X-trail.bandJK.html

The Focus does between 88g/km and 149g/km.

www.ford.co.uk/Cars/Focus/Performanceandefficiency

"a Mini Cooper does fewer miles to the gallon than a Land Rover Freelander... "

Again wrong.

52.3 miles per gallon of petrol for the manual Mini Cooper. 44.1 miles per gallon of petrol for the automatic.

www.mini.co.uk/model-range/hatch/mini-cooper/information/

The Freelander meanwhile does 47.1/45.6 miles per gallon of diesel as a manual vehicle, and 40.4 miles per gallon of diesel as an automatic.

www.landrover.com/gb/en/lr/freelander-2/explore/s/

So not even the same fuel. And on that note, you make a good point, these 4x4s are so unaerodynamic and obese that they have mostly switched to diesel engines.

Which is bad news for anyone in the area. Diesel emissions are deadly, whereas CO2 is by itself harmless. Diesels emit more small particles, twenty times more nitrogen dioxide then petrol cars, and so on.

I struggle to describe cars that do more miles per gallon but cause more premature deaths, as 'better for the environment'.

"and we can all cut and paste too..."

Not all of us, evidently. Wink

I don't care because they look so blooming cute! Blush

Sparklingbroomstick · 31/10/2012 13:45

Just waded through all 14 pages. Blimey. Confused

waterlego6064 · 31/10/2012 13:46

Our local drug dealer drives one of those very blingy ones like the one posh spice was standing next to in the picture posted earlier. He parks on double yellow lines and the zig zags right outside the school. And on the pavement too. Still, I assume he needs it in order to be able to go off-road for those occasions when he is trying to get away from the authorities.

We have a local bloke with a lovely old tractor too. Makes me laugh when
I see it in Tesco car park.

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 13:47

MrsKeith I didn't say the take up two lanes, I said they are spread across them ie they often can't fit entirely into one lane so partially block the other one, causing inconvenience to other people.

Ilovecoffeeandchocolate · 31/10/2012 13:52

The main reason people get them is to show off, this whole thread is people desperately trying to justify why they have them. We live in the middle of nowhere I drive a Fiesta and my DH drives a Golf. There is no need for a 4x4 in the country unless you have to go off road. The ones I come across on small roads never seem to go on the verge and expect me to.

So YANBU but there are lots of people who are trying to justify why they need to show off to their neighbors.

MrsBethel · 31/10/2012 13:53

If you can't take the piss out of city 4x4s, then what can you take the piss out of?

MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 13:53

They can fit into one lane! How ridiculous! Do you not think there'd be massive tailbacks up and down the country if a large number of cars on the road can't fit into one lane?

valiumredhead · 31/10/2012 13:55

If you can't take the piss out of city 4x4s, then what can you take the piss out of?

Smug twats on bikes?

FunBagFreddie · 31/10/2012 13:55

4x4s aren't really showoffy cars though are they? I can think of much better options if I wanted to swank around being a flash git and if I had the money.

Jusfloatingby · 31/10/2012 13:55

MrsKeith I am relating my experience when driving down a road where the lanes are narrow and can just about accommodate a normal car.
The tone of your post is quite rude and arrogant.

Ilovecoffeeandchocolate · 31/10/2012 13:56

people who drive them look rather daft when they say it is just because you are jealous that you can't afford them it has not crossed their mind that perhaps you can but don't feel the need for vulgar displays of wealth.
