to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

YADDDDDNBU!

With you 100% OP Grin

Nothing but stupidity to be driving the bloody things in London.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 12:14

They don't at our school btw. Only a few.

littleducks · 31/10/2012 12:14

I gave no problem with 4x4. As many people have said they are very useful
In circumstances that are not always obvious to outsiders.

However I think people who drive 4x4s need to be able to drive and PARK them safely and responsibly. They is a very famous private school near us which is absolute hell at drop off and pick up time. Lots of girls are bussed on by coaches, which makes the road s bit hectic. The rest are delivered in shiny 4x4, most often Porsche monsters. It isn't really a narrow road but with one of these in each side (parked a foot away from the curb to avoid scratching the wheels which tbf cost more than my car Wink) and coaches squeezing through it gets manic. Solution? The lovely 4x4 drivers now just drive along the pavement. All four wheels, with a grass verge between them and the road Angry.

Eh Rinders?

Eh MrsKR? What's that got to do with it?

janey68 · 31/10/2012 12:15

Yeah but it's never "Ed" driving 'em is it? It's usually some senile old fogey or a nervous mum on the school run Grin

Oh sorry, I didn't realise you were just talking about that London.

The centre of the known universe.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 12:17

Wrong about what?

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 12:18

I was joking Ed. You know, trying to be funny. Perhaps my joke was about as funny as the OP's Hmm

You said they put you and your children at risk by restricting your view when reversing out of spaces.

I said drive in.

You said I do. Apart from this one time...

So I said - was it that one time you couldn't reverse in that you were surrounded by big 4x4's meaning your view was restricted and you were put at risk?

Phew... Exhausted!

RinderThrillerNight · 31/10/2012 12:20

Oh, that Hmm was to myself btw, not to anyone else on the thread before I get into trouble for it.

TantrumsIsTheREALPumpkinKiller · 31/10/2012 12:21

OP if you see far too many of them at school why the sudden interest in this one?
I thought you said upthread that you never see them in the car park which is why you felt the need to comment on it?

And BTW we drive a big fuck off 4x4. In London. Because we like it, and can afford it.

And as we all do plenty of sport and go to the gym we are not worried about ourselves or our "bratty" children becoming obese.

TBH if you think its a crass and selfish car, I could not actually care any less. Do you know why?
Because if I can afford to buy and run it, and I like it then it is no ones business

I think some people need to find a hobby or something rather than deciding for me what car I should drive. Would you like to also judge the job I have, where I live, what shoes I wear?

Im sure some of my shoes are unnecessary as well, should I give them away and walk barefoot in case people with only one pair of shoes become outraged by my selfishness?

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 12:22

No, I said the LAST time I couldn't. Not the ONE time I couldn't. iyswim?

cinnamonnut · 31/10/2012 12:23

Ah - people feel safe in their 4x4s. Screw everyone else then Grin

squeakytoy · 31/10/2012 12:23

You are less likely to suffer a serious injury if you are the occupant of a 4 x 4 as they are better at withstanding impact.

Considering that pedestrians should be on the pavements, or crossing the road at a designated place, it most often isnt the fault of the driver if a pedestrian steps in front of their vehicle.

My point there being, yes, as a pedestrian in an RTA you are more likely to be more seriously injured by a Range Rover than a Reliant Robin, but you would also be even more badly injuried by a Bus or a Lorry...

MrsKeithRichards · 31/10/2012 12:23

So it's a bit of a moot point you were making then?

I don't know what a moot point is, I never have got round to googling it - sorry. But I was giving you an example of an instance when it was very difficult to reverse park, because you said I must be a shit driver if I couldn't always do this.

geegee888 · 31/10/2012 12:30

To be honest, I find those people who get all smug about being environmentally friendly who trade in small new cars every 2 or 3 years more annoying. It costs more in environmental terms to manufacture a small cheap car which will only last a few years before being scrapped than a luxury vehicle which tends to last longer. DH and I possess a 17 year old Mercedes which is still doing sterling service. It gets around 40mpg on
motorway trips.

We also have a BMWX5. Its also converted to LPG. Is useful for feeding the horses in winter so they don't starve. The X5 is a 2003 model and has many years left in it. Probably if you knew nothing about X5s, because it came with a private number plate, you would only think its a couple of years old. So it seems hypocritcal when someone who drives a spanking new supermini looks down upon us for being environmentally unfriendly in our larger but older cars.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 12:33

We've had our small car for 5 and a half years now and intend to run it for as long as it will go on. Despite it being a squash when dc3 arrives shortly.

I'm glad it's efficient though at least. I don't really like having a car at all but it's been very useful.

Mercedes seem to go on for lifetimes. I really like the old ones.

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 12:33

Considering that pedestrians should be on the pavements, or crossing the road at a designated place, it most often isnt the fault of the driver if a pedestrian steps in front of their vehicle.

Ah yes, the SUV mindset.

"You are in my way"
"He shouldn't have stepped in front of me"
"That child should have been holding his mother's hand"

Most illuminating, thanks for that.

And if you kill someone, your choice of 3 tonne vehicle has nothing to do with it, no not at all lalala. They were asking for it, walking into the road without looking weren't they?

Finally joan you've got it! Oh no, you were being sarcastic weren't you?

Of course if someone walks in the road without looking and a 4x4 hit them it would be the drivers fault Confused

jjuice · 31/10/2012 12:39

Some of the stereotyping and bizarre assumptions on her are making me piss...so it's lucky I have easy clean leather seats in my fuck off big clog (named as it has the carbon emissions of Holland)

I wonder what small car drivers do when they come to a speed bump (usually placed where cars need to slow down ie near schools etc)
I slow down to go over them I also stop at red lights and zebra crossings.

Which yes makes me sound like a right cunt....a naff, dim, antisocial, bullying, nuisance of a cunt who can't park, has brats for kids, who bounces off kerbs, runs pedestrians over, who can't see small cars, who dares to wax my vehicle( I also clean my kitchen worktops), who hogs parking spaces, has a personal trainer and multiple foreign holidays.

Wow.Just wow.

ps maybe this year in the winter I won't bother towing anyone in a small car in trouble, maybe I should just drive right over the top of them because I obviously can't see them. I also won't do anyones shopping for them, serves them right if they can't eat...I am so much more entitled to that's why I have a 4x4

JoanBias · 31/10/2012 12:40

Of course not. Best put some spikes on the side to make sure eh?
